Good point! I did not think of it that way when I responded. That is exactly how I used to view things when I was in grade school. Normally when I saw something that was blocked such as certain web sites I felt challenged to figure out how it worked so I can bypass the filter.
Of course later I learned the hard way that it was the wrong environment for me to tamper with settings and such and I got in trouble with the school IT administration eventually once I got caught. That said... there is a right and a wrong place for this type of behaviour. School was not the right place and home was. Problem was that I did not have anything close to the schools large network. So my playground was limited... Today I will NEVER attempt anything that's against some computer policy without explicit permission.
So with that said I think it would be wise to teach your child not to tamper with equipment at the school or any other main public place. Laws are getting stricter and should you get caught breaking one it may be considered a felony and look bad on your record for future employers. As for getting your kid curious forcing him to learn what DHCP is and how to set his network info manually is a good thing.
Sorry for my shitty grammar:-(... I am rushing this post... Its not like my Karma can get much worse than it is. That is there's anything lower than Bad.
Go to your room, and I'm revoking your DHCP lease for the next 3 hours!
If the kids smart enough he can just assign himself a static IP, DNS, and subnet manually.
Going back on topic... I'm currently 21yrs old. When I was growing up my brother and I lived in a mid sized house in a secluded wooded area. Most of the time I would go outside and go bike riding, sleding, and building my fort in the woods. We were lucky enough to have a swimming pool too. Most of the time I would hate staying inside very long. When I turned 10 my parents got a computer that my brother and I could use but it was only an offline computer with Win3.1 on it. We also had NES and Atari. DOS Gaming was very enjoyable along with console gaming. My mother worried about us getting ticks in the woods and poisen ivy and we did get that. However I never had any allergies and I still do not because I think my body built an immunity to it. Our water was also well water and it was hard.
At present I spend most of my time indoors using the computer and hardly exercise. I don't hang out with anybody after school either. Most of the exercise I get is walking to classes from my car. Now I'm starting to get back into shape again. I'm not fat either but I want to build up my muscles.
boooooo, I just managed to get a moderation to make my karma back to positive. Shot back down to neutral. Maybe this response I am making now will bring it down to negative. Come on I dare you!
I'm hoping for more game publishers to use open source projects for development. Its kind of a pain to boot to WinXP from Linux. Yes I know there is Wine and Cedega but its not always the solution...
Agreed... About Zune... Saw a new fancy AD on TV that must of cost M$ lots of money. I for one will not buy a Zune. Although I am not the type to purchase MP3 Players, Palm pilots, or even a hands free cellphone set (Don't drive and talk on phone).
I read the first paragraph only then got overwhelmed when I got past that. There should be a warning before posting such a long article on slashdot as it may cause brain seizures. nuff said! 0-|
I see this as something positive. Should this eventually be successful in schools all over schools will be able to spend their money on other things like repairing and maintaining the school buildings. The school I went to was in dire need of repairs and very old. The schools had trouble paying for new school book materials. Took forever to get newer computers. Anyway I think the bottom line is that free online school materials are a plus not a minus.
Right now I attend a community college taking 2 classes as a part time student. The books for the classes are very expensive. I paid close to $300 for them. If you get them at the college bookstore they take advantage of you and price them higher than they are really worth. Good thing I use amazon.com and other online sources for getting my text books. Getting a bit offtopic here... I believe those books should be much cheaper or just have the students not purchase the books and use some online resource for learning...
idon't really see all that stupid hype about this stupid iphone. Personally icould care less about those features like browsing the web and listening to music stored on the iphone. iuse my phone to make/receive calls and receive voicemail and that's about it. Occasionally iuse the camera. Should I ever want a phone that does all these extra things i'd rather have one that is not locked down to one provider, allows third party apps, and open source linux based.
Just like many other posters said before... Saved games are the most important part of the game or user generated content like maps and mods you created for that game. The games are easily replaceable but the user-generated content is not as easy to replace. For the most part I like to keep my savegames after I beat the game. Sometimes I may use it but most of the time I never go back and replay the game.
As for the Steam service it would be nice if your steam Account stored your save games. With Steam I have a habit of burning the content, mods, and savegames to DVD or backing it up elsewhere. I know Steam saves lots of things but I never like to trust that the server will be up 24/7 and I can download the content any time without problems. Also, downloading game content takes a long time even with broadband/Fiber. Also, I use the delicious bookmark service to save bookmarks through FireFox. Its real convenient when the bookmarks are available and have had no problems with the On-line bookmark service so far (knock on wood) but I occasionally export my favourites to my local machine and it goes onto my DVD backups. I do the same for my Gmail contacts and more. Today I notice a trend with newer computer users who use these On-Line services never backup their data. Then when that nice service screws up and loses their data they are screwed!
Yes I know what I said may be redundant. I just wanted to throw in my comment. Lost some points before to my karma. Putting my karma on the line again.... fucking Karma...:-D
I agree. I have met plenty of people who had money to spend and never really were interested in fixing their equipment such as their computer or some other gizmo. They would say when I fix it you may have it. Good luck. Many times it was fixable for free or very little. I got my servers and my computer this way. I also got a few goodies from the city dump or on dump day where I would spot equipment that people were throwing away at the ends of their driveways. I guess you can say the old phrase "Another man's garbage is another man's treasure."
Also with Windows Vista out keep a look out for lots of goodies!
Nor am I a advocate of forcing people into something. I was just kidding with the government involvement. The Gov is already entrenched in our US society way to much (if your American of course).
Strongly agree with you. Anytime I have a file to copy over a network connection I never move the file otherwise should a failure occur like a power failure the original copy on the source machine is intact then you just recopy it to the destination host machine. Then delete it afterwards from the source machine if you want to.

No I guess not. Wonder why Walmart didn't tell us for it is the holy grail of information for us ye commoners!
a bit offtopic but... theres a Beowulf Movie
I'll drink to that!
I originally read your comment as: "I assume this is only a problem for those whose mothership doesn't have a hardware random-number generator?"

I agree. Except that if you do buy a hardcopy don't buy it from the schools store because from experience I see that they rip you off on prices...

Maybe the government should get involved and use some of the characters they used to for no drugs like scruff mcgruff. "game frees the way to be!"
I'm 21yrs also. Used to play NES, SNES, and N64 (Latest console I own).
I for one am happy that Google is entering the mobile market with a Linux based phone. Good for competition and good for Linux.
