    hotmail.com should never receive a REFERER header of goatse.cx, because (to my knowledge... haven't actually been there recently) goatse.cx doesn't link to hotmail. the referer header isn't sent out when you type in the address bar. is it really so unreasonable for server admins to know about what terms search engines index them under, and what websites link to them? nothing to do with the user.

    and, why not just turn it off in your browser anyway?

    This fails to justify the other things limited to pro which don't cost nullsoft anything (burning cds and/or ripping to wav "faster" than the free version... i would be very surprised if this is anything more than an arbitrary choke on the speed in the free one)

    This is less about big business (which, frankly, profits when their drugs are bought legally with a prescription, or illegally via an online pharmacy with no prescription) and more about complying with existing laws. Except they don't profit, because, due to either economic conditions or legal price ceilings in other countries, they're sold for much less... this is subsidized by inflated US prices.

    It may be more accurate to say that the probablility of a reversal in any given year is increasing, rather than saying we are "overdue". Or maybe that is just splitting hairs.
    I don't see the difference between the two phrasings, personally... that's what "overdue" means to me when referring to a natural event. the statement that just because it's rare means it's unlikely implies that there's a fixed probability of it happening on any given day.

    You're backpedaling... you said before that if he reduces the value of something you had to $0, that's stealing. if he sells widgets for $1 and you can't keep up with that competition, the value of your widgets, since you can't sell them effectively, is $0 for you.

    if it's not illegal to refuse such returns, then why do software places/companies give you the runaround (M$ claims it's the store's responsibility, store claims only M$ can do the refund, etc) instead of simply flat-out saying "no returns"? i guess my perception was distorted by their lack of honesty.

    that's napster... the so-called "supernodes" in kazaa are normal computers running the client on a fast processor/connection, which switches it to a different mode.

    it doesn't matter if the artist doesn't want it. you have the RIGHT to be an informed consumer. this is just a way to get around stores that ILLEGALLY refuse returns on opened merchandise... except, it makes no sense, since most stores have a thing with headphones, etc, you can listen to in the store.

    the practice of leaving it the same developed in the face of a real need (non-threading usenet readers and slow discussions), perpetuated due to cluelessness (the same kind of people who hit "reply all" to a mass-forwarded email), and now, full circle, the reverse is considered clueless. yes, it does show that he just discovered the internet, and thus hasn't had time to learn all the pointless anachronistic traditional rituals (like, say, leaving the topic the same on a reply) associated with it. slashdot keeps track of threads _for_ you. you don't need to look at it and mentally say "all the messages with _this_ topic are in _that_ thread, and the other ones over here are..."
