gaim UI sucks. it doesnt follow the gnome HIG and has lots of usability flaws. lets face reality, the only reason its so widely spread and being the "official" gnome IM, is because there is no other alternative!!
having a web product in "beta" state is simply the new fashion for web2 apps. it gives a "cool" look, like "beware, you are testing and unfinished product" and at the same time avoids harsh complains about bugs because... "you are testing and unfinished product"
i have to disagree with your opinion. the no-buttons thing was actually quiet good! i loved to play the game without stupid things that only steal screen-space... it was nice to have those beautiful graphics with nothing else on top. the fact that you had to make gestures with the hand was also a good gameplay thing, because they ARE SPELLS... its magic man!:) just clicking a button a do it its half the fun...
correct, i live in portugal and almost everybody uses msn messenger... only the geek community uses other protocols (but they also use 'msn'). in fact, once i had a person i barely knew adding me to their contact list, and i asked how they knew i had msn... the answer was simple, they "just add my email...". everybody just thinks that if you have an email you have msn...
ok, its not because this is M$ or something, but what exactly is the fuss around those screenshots? doesnt seem to have anything really new and innovative (go figure). And that 3 column message-view will definetly suck...
i think we are starting to see too many VoIP solutions... we dont know lots of competition, we need interoperatibility between them. Google said its trying to achieve that with Talk, I hope the rest goes the same way...
If the guys whose job it is to rake in huge amounts of money deploying telecom equipment can't mobilize themselves to grab that money then I seriously doubt any amount of volunteers can.
That is why they are not asking for money, but asking for material and human resources.
Don't underestimate, specially in a big place like the US, if people really want to help they can do it faster than these big corporations.

You see, when you have a critical issue such as this, which is holding back aid in crisis areas you can not just wait for agreements and meetings between vendors/corporations or whatever... it just takes them too much time to move their asses and get some work done.
