  5. congress@work on Congress@Work · · Score: 1

I think there should be public diclosure in these bills that shows which special interest groups or lobbyist (sp?) were an influence in the formation of said bill. These groups have more influence over our representatives than the individual does. There has to be some accountability for all this influence peddling.

  6. The acting... on On The Dune Miniseries · · Score: 1

The characters were miscast. William Hurt was terrible. I found the acting flat and uninspiring which didn't lead to good character development. The character development was in the book but the acting failed to translate it. I felt no empathy to the characters. To quote Homer Simpson...BORING!

Hey, all you socialist liberals, this is the doing of YOUR President! You were foolish enough to vote for him and now look what it's got you. Al Gore is cut from the same cloth. THINK HARD ABOUT HOW YOU WILL VOTE IN NOVEMBER!

  10. Missing the point on License to Surf · · Score: 1

I read the article and I can see the point he's trying to make. In having a license to drive a car, you agree to abide by the traffic laws and you realize that there are legal and life consequences if you do not. By failing to obey traffic laws, you could lose your license or if you're involved in an accident, you could lose your life. Driving is more dangerous than web surfing because it involves real objects that can do real damage. It is therefore neccessary to have a set of rules that we all agree to obey so that all drivers can be safe on the road.
The web, on the other hand, deals with thoughts and words. The regulation for what you think and the words you speak comes from YOU, from that internal moral center that has come to you from your life experiences. A license cannot regulate your soul.
As I said, I can see his point but I disagree with his idea. My heart and my conscience are my license. They may not be perfect but no one is.

  11. Troubled Yoots on Software to Predict "Troubled Youths" · · Score: 3

I see some lawsuits coming out of this. What if a student refused to take the test because he felt it violated his civil rights and the school expelled him for it? That might be an opening for the parents to sue the school. Possible? Probable?
Another thing I see is if a student is determined to have a violent potential, the school might insist on "re-education" to eliminate those tendancies. Visions of re-education camps to "normalize" your behavior spring to mind. "We will help you, comrade citizen, since you cannot help yourself. We know what is best for you."

  12. Number Stations on Spooks in the Wire · · Score: 2

As far as I know, these stations have been around since the sixties. Personally, I think the numbers being read are messages for a one time pad. The intended reciever could write down the numbers between two given time periods, apply a key for that date & time and decode the message. To anyone else listening, the numbers remain a mystery.
