  1. Re:Exaggeration for bragging rights on Facebook Revealed As Behind $1.5B "Catapult" Data Center In Iowa · · Score: 1

From my understanding, its multiple buildings. They're going to be pretty freaking huge, but still multiple buildings. Iowa already has tax incentives to help attract companies like Google and Microsoft. I'm not surprised that Facebook is building there. 2 separate power grids (with lots of wind energy), no flooding, you can build buildings to withstand some pretty powerful winds [ Take a tour of LightEdge's data center right across the Interstate to see for yourselves ] not to mention all the dark fiber running all across the state.

I think its good for Iowa, but I think you hit the point where its a bit of bragging rights and inflation of the numbers to get even more tax breaks and special considerations like lower rates on water, etc. But when it comes down to it, its not going to create many long term high paying jobs which is what the politicians will tout. It will make a few average income workers that will quickly burn out when they realize that they are server monkeys just replacing a server when the light flashes red and nothing more.

  2. Nope on Are You Using SPF Records? · · Score: 5, Interesting

I don't use them personally and we have very few customers at my current job that will request them.

I used to work for an anti-spam company and the request would come in from time to time to have SPF checking built into our appliances. As developers, we did see the benefit of it. But at the time, there was the SPF vs SenderID vs Domain Keys battle going on. Who would win out?

As it appears years later, no one really did.

The problem with the technology is adoption rates. Unfortunately, many of these technologies are not being adopted by the masses. I'm not saying its hurting you by having these in place, but it also might not be doing as much good as you think that it is.

  3. MailFoundry on Spam Filtering For Small/Medium Business? · · Score: 1

My company will be installing MailFoundry in the next month. It has shown to catch more spam than IronPort and ProofPoint in our internal testing. It was also a lot faster than the other two. We have been having issues with Postini catching false positives and not allowing us to filter our outbound mail.

MailFoundry offered great kill rates, faster throughput and outbound filtering for a cheap price.

    They're definitely worth a look.

Ok, Like it was tough to improve the piece of shit known as Visual Basic. It is allowing people that probably shouldn't be programmers to have jobs. On to point number two, M$ is a company filled with very very smart business people. They make money by tying thier products together. They get in trouble by tying thier products together. Until they are told to do otherwise, they will continue to keep tying thier products together. This is why people like Ballmer and Gates are philthy ass rich. Because they realize that the more indepth they can form a web of M$ products, the more that people are going to go out and get the next greatest thing which will cause then to shell out more $$ to upgrade older M$ stuff to work with the new stuff. It is a nasty cycle and they are making a lot of dough out of the deal. Granted, I think that it is a shitty way to do business, but they Government hasn't stopped them yet so what can you do.

  10. i-Mode will win on WAP vs. iMode - The Big Cell Fight · · Score: 5

I work for an internet company and we are currently working on a project to make our site WAP enabled. WHy are we using WAP, cause we have to. If we had a choice we would use I-Mode for several reasons.

    1. WAP really isn't documented anywhere of what acutally works and what doesn't. Not to mention that every phone maker out there is using something different, It isn't really WAP, it is the bastard first child of what will become WAP in the next 6 months. There is limited support for full form functionality. And the emulators don't work consistently, thus, the phones don't work consistently, get my drift. For the Mr Rodger's neighborhood people," Can you say Cluster F*CK!"

    2. Speed burns baby! WAP, at best can handle 9600. Whoo! now that is a screaming technology. But that is what it was built for, recieving text, not graphics, not games, text. I-mode however has been built for speed. In Japan they are playing network games over these things.

    3. When WAP decided to come out, it thought, hell, we don't need no stinking http protocol, we will invent our own called WAP. yeah, great idea guys, did you forget to mention that you are re-inventing the wheel here or were we supposed to see something great and new. Basically they made a system where the phone contacts the provider which has a server, the server goes out to the site that they want and looks for WML files, the server crunches them and then sends them back to the phone. (at least, that is the way that it is supposed to work, I haven't had anyone prove that it works yet) This is really great, so this is basically a proxy server going to a web server and delivering a page that they can see on thier phone. Why not just use the TCP/IP and go hit a web page designed for a phone. If a server is set up correctly and the programmer has a clue, they will do some client checking and send the phones to a greatly stripped down page were all they see is the text, nothing fancy.

The japanese have thier stuff together, the question is, are we going to open our eyes and see it or are we going to get stomped in electronics.....again!

Right now the internet is out of control in the minds of the govt. It is the one thing that they haven't figured out how to tax. So, they put these boxes in the major areas, track you and figure out what you are buying, where you are coming from and then they can apply the appropiate tax to you. Govt gets its money and you get to be tracked and watched like a bad TV series. Nice eh?

  12. Proposal and Our Court system.... on Will The DOJ Split Microsoft In Three? · · Score: 1

Personally, I am more in favor of having microsoft broken into 3 divisions. OS, Desktop Apps, Server Apps. There is a lot of grey area in almost every proposal out there but the main problem won't be how they do it, but when.

Our court system is great if you want to have something delayed in an appeal process that can take several years. That means, microsoft will probably be realeasing Windows 2005 by the time the breakup actually takes place. Microsoft in the end, will still be the evil big brother, we will just feel better about ourselves for finally handing it to them, whenever that may be.

I think that the ultimate goal that needs to come out of this is better software. Why do I use Linux, because it does what I need for it to do and does it very well. Some people prefer *BSD, others windows. I'm not saying that I would ever go back to windows, but I am hoping that they will start making a better product so I can stop supporting thier bugs....ooops, I meant to say "features"

Secondly, what type of capabilities are we talking about here. I want a unit that can handle audio cds as well as data cds holding MP3s plus have a storage area of its own as a repository of MP3z. Maybe if I knew that it was a kick ass unit that did everything that I wanted, I might shell out $300-$400. But not $600

While taking the time to watch the NBC cash in on the Y2K, I noticed something interesting that the local TV station was doing to cover its butt. After each commercial break, they would have a message across the bottom of the screen stating that this was just a movie and not a documentary of any sort. I am partially relieved that the local station is doing something pro-active to stop the spread of the hysteria, yet at the same time, I am disappointed in NBC cashing in on the bug.

This has been around for many years. I can remember back at least 5 years ago that the shoppers hotline would give you a box to run your cable through. the box would record what you watched as far as commercials and stuff and then dial into a central system and upload the info. Then when you went to the store you were supposed to have them scan a card that you had so that the information could be tracked what you bought and how well the commercials had an effect on what you bought. Kind of scary when you really think about it. But there were ways around it. You could have the box but not use the card so they could not track what you bought at the store.
