I don't think so. I've used AIX for the last five years, coming from Slowlaris and HP-UX and it was light years ahead of those operating systems. I love Linux and I like the fact IBM AIX was starting to have Linux affinity and may eventually be replaced by it.
In the last five years, I have not had an outage due to a problem with the operating system. I never had a problem upgrading the OS and adding maintainence. I have found drivers for all the hardware, plus with config manager I can remove and recreate devices without rebooting. There is nothing obscure about AIX. It runs on IBM's hardware and I've run my production systems for 5 years on my 14 node SP with NO issues.
My company pays for support, and I've used it, and it works. IBM may cost a pretty penny, but it works well. IBM partnered a while ago with RH in order to provide Linux support. Really, if IBM does continue to deliver great hardware (I just got a LTO tape library with 8 drives -- OMG is it fast)... who cares what it runs? In five years it might be IBM supporting my machines with Linux on it, but I'll still have a contract in place... why? Do I need it? No, its because as a member of a company whose systems need to be available and they assume some cost to have that happen. There is my paycheck and the support that enables me to offer them the uptime they need.
Don't diss the old stuff because you can't diss the company. They have evolved and I appreciate it. There are many of Linux components missing from a linux distro... a SMIT like utility, a configuration manager, support for LPAR's, etc.
The thing that's obvious to me is IBM listens to their customers and is delivering what they try and promise -- the best thing out there to run.
Your not kidding. I actually have a Windows guy in our Client/Server group that told me he would "go down" on Bill Gates for what he has done for his paycheck. He was in the health field, got his MCP and from there landed a junior position of his current job.
That was three years ago, now he has a firm grasp that there is a need for both platforms and we choose the best one for the job.
My point? Say what you want about Slashdotters -- this one knows whe to use what tool and shall do so. I still don't run Oracle on Windows and I don't let my users run apps in X.
The original question has value, introducing an obvious statement (AC#1 not AC#2) is a waste of time. As for AC#2, I just remembered my co-worker saying that years ago -- thanks for the memories.
but I really don't mind paying for the music I listen to. I amek money and if someone produces something I want to hear, I'll pay for it. Everyone deserves to eat. The RIAA is not winning a campaign... I bet there is just as many people willing to pay for such services (did they even exist a year ago?) I stopped using Napster once it became controversial. I realized I was stealing. No Kaaza or free services replaced it. I was actually hoping for a napster-like pay service.
The cool things is, Microsoft will probably loose money on this product, just to spread its use. I cant wait to get my hands on one, and get Linux up and running on it. Could you imagine a Beowulf cluster of Xbox's..... mmmmMMMMmmm... s upercomputer of Xbox's. Go Bill!
Now we know why Microsoft has all those opening for Linux software developers. The new product will be called something like: gnuvirus. Just because they cant buy Linux from anyone and make it exinct.. they'll just try to infest the net with virii for Linux. You go, Billy G.
The firewall (where I work) is running Solaris, and all of the servers in the DMZ are running IIS or apache. Perhaps the firewall has changed, or the firewall was changed to linux.
No way to tell, if they are behind a tuff firewall.
Why do lawyers exist? Just to make up this babble? I have seen posts to this, that argue about the InterNIC and registration and all...
Well, what are these companies thinking?
Its like a gamble. Let's put this crap in there and hope we dont get caught. It's like a kid with matches. We wont know until it bites someone.
Don't they realize that this is bullcrap logic, and that, once found out, it will just make them look like greedy a**holes that we already think of them as? I would doubt they would "embrace" the movement of using mp3s... they want their little empire. They want to be able to sign new talent, and make money off them.
Heck, I would be MORE than happy to buy music. I figure a song is worth $1. I own it, and I can listen to it. The radio should play music so I can see if I like it... thats why there are so many stations. I like the song, boom, I purchase it.
Sony wants the rights to URLs for life. At the very least, they need to curtail it to the length of the contract with the artist, if at all. If the contract is busted early, welp, the domain name (note the site content) should be given to the artist.
I used to be real critical about artist who were real successful and founded their own label. Now I know why it happens. The middle men are losing money. I have no compassion for them.
If I were an agent... I would cross that part out of the contract and laugh my a** off.
The empire needs to go down... power to the artists... down with Microsf~1... power to Open Source..... get rid of the fat, money hungry corp types.
I think they have something set up which monitors the IP your coming from, and seeing how your using it. I tried it a few times and it worked, but then it died. Perhaps the system is sort of crippled -- and realizez your multiple attempts using this one url, and blocks you out.
That was my point of my post. I dont think I articulated it well, but I was trying to say that those expensive quad boxes are not what I had in mind for a Beowulf. I expected a whole bunch of PII machines... true more bang per server, but more buck, too.
I dont know, but when I think of a beowulf cluster, I think of seperate machines. I guess 32 quad processor boxes are legal:) "... Yeah, and Microsloth is going to own the world.... oops."
But these are fish-eye cameras on the ceiling, unless you point them out, the kid will never know they are on camera.....
> newsflash, there's more in the world than you an your opinion
Additional newsflash: That makes your opinion unimportant =)
j/k, continue on with the discussion, nothing to see here.
1. Port Win XP to a Mac.
2. Submit your solution first to contest.
3. $14K profit!
Ummm... there will be no male interns allowed in the White House?
He's not careless. Those are the reasonable amount of bugs for the cost of the comment.
Your absolutely correct. The article even goes on to point out that such a change would "drive the accountants crazy" at Akamai.
I wish the approvers of the stories would read the article before posting the summary.
John
Obviously, he wouldn't be pulled over for speeding... but what if a blaster went off?
No, seriously, how would you insure the thing? Can you imagine an adjuster asking which parts (if any) are stock?
How could you say anything to a cop? Guess he wouldnt have to ask you if you were on drugs.
Are they ill temmpered?
and viola....

Dont you think they could prevent them from using that ticker symbol... it seems too generic. After reading that list... it just makes me shiver.
Perhaps the AC should at all times stay 500 feet away from a computer that has the capability to log onto /. for one year. Lest he be tempted to do so.

I do.
Couldnt it be that the Sun box was the firewall ?

Dunno
Maybe thats why I only have three machines for myself. Everyone does right?
Now, how many more addons will laptop manufacturers come out with .... that will knock the time right back down to three hours. Owell....
I want to see the government quake in their boots!
"Oh, no, we cant hide anything anymore!"
Well, they didnt want us hiding info either.
Personally, I think encryption is a fine thing. Each person should be guaranteed their privacy.
I wonder... how many people are still using 40 and 56 bit keys?
