If the classroom has a network connection(heck bring your own), set up a laptop to bring up a online classroom/meeting (or even anything with video & voice). Get a coworker or somebody to join you online from your office. Then you can explain the concepts of networks in terms they understand. It would be a great lead in to some of the other ideas talking about the aerospace angle. If you can wow them with tangible imagery (connecting people around the world, insides of computers without giving details) geekery doesn't need to be boring. The problem is that most of us "geeks" try to explain what would be interesting to US.
Yeah, jokes aside, I don't know about you guys(girls?) but I probably have as many, if not more female friends online than males. Obviously, all of the male geeks are online, but not all of the rest of the guys. On the other side, almost all of the females are online.
TFA doesn't say what "online" means (unless I'm dumb and missed it), so that kind of makes this entire discussion moot. Online gaming? Social Networking? Email? Internet Browsing? Voip? Online shopping? Without breaking that down by activity, that's kinda almost like a really, really expensive way to find out that there are more women then men.
Yes, you are missing something. You/We are not the norm. We are the exception to the norm. If our way was sufficient, there wouldn't be a need for stuff like this. How many of you have done support for friends, families, bullies?:-) How many of those people don't install some of these programs, cause it's too much trouble? How many of them have no idea what ad-ware/spyware means? How many have called you asking about how to do simple, menial (to us anyway) tasks, that could be solved with some of this software? I don't know about you, but for me, it's a large proportion of the support I give.
What the original statement was trying to say is that most/many geeks using Windows (Shut up, yes there are some of us using it. No you're not all that funny), already have most of these installed. For me it was about 70%. Are there better alternatives out there? Probably, but that's not the point. The included software is a collection of fairly good, mainstream, respected choices for in each of their fields. I can tell my family/friends to click this link and install ONE program and then, not have to worry. It will take care of installing all of those pieces. BTW, all of those installs are INVISIBLE. There are NO dialogs to click, no choices neccessary, which is great for the large majority who will just click through the dialogs anyway. It also detects if you already have it installed and doesn't bother you about those. Oh and it keeps them up to date. Automatic installs of windows patches weren't created for us geeks, it was created for the millions of users who don't know what a windows patch is and why it's needed.
Google isn't the one that needs to get a clue, we are. As a software engineer, I have a lot of respect for large companies who make software that just bloody works (for the common user).
Unless you're in Canada... I've noticed that the 7-elevens in the States use a different type of machine which adds a whole lot of air. I've never had to do that here. (There are a few places in Canada that use those machines, but not 7-eleven)
I second that. Specifically the Espon Perfection series, especially if ever have a need to do photo scanning. It's fast, clear and has been super reliable. I belive ours is a Perfection 3150? It also does scanning of photo negatives, which is a feature I really like. I wouldn't hesitate buying one again.
Perhaps someone out there can provide some insight for those of us not in the know. Lets assume for a second that they reach an acceptable level of confidence that this turns out to be an effective strategy for battling Cancer (and also that they can ensure that the HIV virus doesn't harm the patient). How long does it generally take for a strategy such as this to reach Cancer patients (and i don't mean as test subjects)?

Stay connected with wireless email using VersaMail.(1)
VersaMail makes it easy to access and manage email on the go.(4) With the Treo 650's support for popular POP and IMAP email clients, users can download mail wirelessly or by synchronizing with their desktops.(5) And for users whose organizations use Microsoft Exchange Server 2003, the Treo 650's built-in Microsoft Exchange Server ActiveSync(R) support will enable direct corporate email and calendar synchronization(6) (see palmOne announcement dated Oct. 5). With VersaMail, users can view photos, HTML, and even native Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint attachments.(7)
What kind of hardware issues?
I use (and develop for ) at Treo 600 regularly, and while I don't particularily like the device itself (ugly screen, terrible keyboard, phone a bit annoying to use), overall it's not a bad device. In the past I did have some connectivity and stabiliy issues, but the latest ROM update seemed to fix most of the problems. If your cow-workers haven't done upgraded the ROM, the might try that.
It's nice to see that palm is trying to address the major week points of this device....
If you can type at 80 wpm with two fingers, if you had spent exactly as much time training yourself typing with 9 fingers would you not think that your 9 finger typing speed would be much well over 80 wpm?
Taking into account that you learn much faster at a younger age, and going back to relearn typing may never be as effective...
But I would think that if you typed 80 wpm with two fingers, you'd be able to top 100 wpm with 9 easily (Not accounting for the fact that looking at the keyboard is less efficient anyway).
After all, you're reducing the ammount of physical work that needs to be done, and your brain is doing more work as a result. The brain should be able to move much faster than any one of your muscles.
There's a great utility that'll speed up the load time of Acrobat (supports most versions up to 6.01). The problem with most versions of acrobat is it has a hundred plugins that most people don't use loading every time. This utility will allow you turn off the loading of some or all of those extras.

Calgary, Alberta. It's raining and cold right now. That kinda sucks.
Yes, we need to actively study every aspect of these women's lives, for market research... Science People!!! jeez!
Agreed

Bravo google. And thank you.
Can someone please explain to me what the article said? I started reading it, but I didn't get it and was too lazy to finish reading it.

Sorry, forgot to mention Tom's Hardware does have a review on one of the models. Epson Perfection 3200: http://www.tomshardware.com/consumer/20030822/inde x.html/

Oops sorry about that, didn't know the /s was ssl.
But inside versamail there is a "use secure socket connection (ssl)" setting when setting up IMAP accounts.

That should be modded +5 Insightful.
