check out the "what is a microcontroller?" kit... it's based on a BASIC Stamp, and yes, bloack box, etc etc.... but... the kit has a proto board and many "basic components"
it;s better than going to adio shack and buying a bunch of parts they won't be able to use for anything else...

it is a subset.. a "special case" (straight line, constant speed)
