Thank god there are mods to mark down posts for no reason! This is slashdot, and people who like Windows are marked down by the Linus Tovald Cultists. Go free speech! (Free as in beer)
Perhaps we should anchor the elevator to the sun then, as opposed to the earth.
However this poses another question: Would the so-called "space elevator" collide with mars?
I agree with AC. By making assumptions that bad consequences will come of this just because Bill Gates is involved shows prejudice. At least these children will be growing up with new technology, as opposed to these 8 year old IBMs we have in our school.
But there is still organizations willing to produce such software for free (Nullsoft, for one).
Even if MS did produce WMP for a price, do you think WinAMP would have gone commercial? Personally, I doubt it. And I think most media players and web browsers *should* be free because most people would end up using 3rd party freeware anyway.

I, for one, think that you didn't follow the slashdot joke template.
I, for one, welcome our new AC flamebait overlords.
I, for one, welcome our bad karma overlords!

Long Island (LI) is off the coast of New York
Ironically I do, but my ISP doesn't
That little red dot at the tip of LI is my home LAN going down...
I doubt anyone here stayed awake during English class long enough to understand that reference.
It's almost as funny as someone hacking from Linux.
