This (above) isn't me, but i plan on filing one this evening myself.. but i am going to gather up lots of evidence and make sure i don't just sound like a seething moron. The URL for the complaint form is at
http://www.sec.gov/complaint/cf942sec9570.htm
Which brings us to a point: Anyone filing a complaint against the SCO Group with the SEC, *please* refrain from sounding slanted or ignorant. Be sure to be factual, accurate and watch all your speling and, punctuation. marks
The more professional each complaint is, probably the more attention they will pay to it.
Seriously. Governments and businesses. Every time a pimply faced half-hack writes a new $krYp+ to take down the stand-up comedy act that is Windows Security....
"Blame the admins for not patching when patches were available"....
This has some merit, yes. *BUT* has anyone ever adminned a server that must be up 24/7? If you've got a whole room full of them, you just don't have the time to go in and manually apply patches. Yet, automatic Updates pose another problem: You probably just can't have a MSSQL server doing unexpected reboots all the time. You can lose data, what if the patch breaks something? etc.
And even after all the patches and fixes (we're sidestepping the Microsoft "patch one hole, open 3 others" issue for the moment), stuff still happens. Servers get knocked over. Look how many times it's happened in the last 12 months.
For home users, a disabled computer is a bummer, sure. But for businesses and governments, when will they simply decide that "This Just Cannot Happen Anymore."? Seriously. We're talking lives, national security, and huge amounts of money at stake here.
The alternatives are out there. I know, you know, and/. knows.
We all know that Linux, Solaris, *BSD and the like are not 100% perfect/either/... We also know that *any* poorly adminned box is a deck of cards, but C'mon! look at the vast canyon of difference, just in how installations come out of the box!
When will they learn? Seriously! I think it would make better business sense (read: make more money in the long run) to look away from Microsoft and look towards other Free(software) and Commercial products./me gets off soapbox again.
Fwiw, when i booted up my WintendoXP box to download the patch, i got nailed before i got to type a URL into the browser!!
Don't worry I know your problem.. You put the wrong boot disk in.. The one you want is the CD that says LINUX not Microsoft Windows XP. If that doesnt work.. Open up you case and find the worm.. They are a brownish colour some are a couple inches long.. good luck!
Hell no. All over/. all you hear is LINUX LINUX LINUX. All over CNET and TechTV all you hear is LINUX LINUX LINUX.
Screw you guys and your Monopoly. I'm switching to Windows, The Alternative OS.
As much as i do have issues with outsourcing labour to other countries (at the cost of jobs in the U.S.)...
We've got to remember that OpenSource Operating Systems (and other software) such as GNU/Linux, the *BSDs, and whathaveyou....
Are in the public domain. By the entire world, for the entire world.
We can't get mad at other countries if they and thier governments embrace it. We can only get mad at the U.S. gov't and those who refuse to even take a look.
Actually, this was well before GPS navigation became commonplace.
I had a few solutions worked out, such as following the RF noise from transpacific cables, old-fashioned magnetic (i.e. compasses, gyroscopes, etc), and more whimsical such as phototransistors that would navigate by sun and moon.
Compared to the above (and a few others that were much more complex) GPS almost sounds too easy;)
Actually, my biggest fear was what if it struck the bottom of a boat? It would be somewhere between twice the size of a football to a jetski w/o the handlebars (depending on several factors), and would ride just under the surface.
I guess it could also get eaten by something too.
Ahh well.. no matter. Flying something across the Atlantic is much more impressive anyways.:o)
I think it's cool anyways.
As a side note, in the mid-80's (when i was about 12), i often fantasized about building a self-navigating submarine that would power itself from the Oregon Coast to Tokyo. Drew up all sorts of plans and everything, have the thing all engineered out.
I should dig those plans out of wherever they are and take a serious look at them again...
hrmm.....
What kind of an idiot would buy penis-enlargement pills? Even more idiotic, who would buy them from a spammer? Apparently LOTS of people, according to this article at Wired.
Of course. If it wasn't hugely profitable, they wouldn't do it. Simple as that.
On a side note, we need a complete overhaul of how we handle spam.
If idiots quit buying from spammers (you know the kind, the ones with 5 different "internet boost/download enhancers", weatherbug, a few GAIN utils running at once (read: they click YES to everything)) they might get bored and move on to something else like infomercials. Fat chance though.
I hate to say this, but there are a lot of people on the inet that don't belong there.
And of course, what i've been saying since 1997, you can pass all the laws you want, but enforcement is the problem.
I share a birthday with my favourite linux distro!
I didn't even know!
Happy birthday to us!
Debian:10
Me: 29 (ugh)
Wow.. This is actually... um... embarrassing.
:o)
Don't have full backups?
eesh!
We geeks know better than this!
Oh well. let this be a lesson to us all
Here's a start....

Well, i was mostly referring to server-ware, but sure OS X too.

Jeez!
I booted up my WintendoXP installation to apply the patch, and before i had a chance to finish loading the MS TechNet site, i got nailed by the worm!
Damn!
LOL
WTF?
...that SCO isn't still lying thier heads off...
What's the chance that they offered [undisclosed Fortune 500 Company] a smokin' deal like $150 per cpu, or $1 per cpu, or whathaveyou?
Put the fear of litigation into a company, then give em a way out through an offer they can't refuse.
All part of the plan to extort money.
Just sick man... real sick.

Okay, you've got me on a technicality. My bad. What kinda geek do i think i am? heh.
I guess i should say Free (beer) Music?
Though, the song is only 5 chords, it should be easy to reverse engineer
I shoulda posted the HiFi Mix.
Man, i'm just blowing it all over today.
Alright! All you need now is OpenSource Music! Start by getting this song here!. Ph33r a day in the life of a geek.
THANKYOU for noticing this too.
There might be some "unixy" things behind the scenes of OS X, but the "Unix Spirit" is definately not there.
To me, the "unixy" parts of OS X and the Apple parts of OS X appear to go together like oil and water.
OS X is a great OS, don't get me wrong, but i personally refuse to call it "UNIX".
I think it's cool anyways. As a side note, in the mid-80's (when i was about 12), i often fantasized about building a self-navigating submarine that would power itself from the Oregon Coast to Tokyo. I've got your music right here!
