I would like to see OpenOffice.org become 100% pure Java.
By the same token, I would like to see KOffice read and write MS formats better. That way, on machines where I run KDE I can have a quick-loading office suite that does what I need, and on systems where I have no good alternatives (Windows), I'll have a fully Java office suite that won't destabilize the registry.
There's nothing you can do. Democracy has ended. The Supreme Court is no longer protecting the constitution. Skull and Bones has taken over. And I, for one, do not welcome our new goose-stepping overlords.
The linux distributions are put together for the people who use them. Usage drives the content.
Old machines are junk. Let's face it: if you can get a GHz+ machine with 256M+ RAM for $600 (US) or less, why bother using an old machine? Just because you already have it?
If you want an OS that runs in 4M RAM, get a PDA. Heh.
It seems like these companies are just trying to squeeze as much out of this time period as they can. In other words, soon it will be common to have a small device that's persistently connected to the network, playing streaming music from a server that has a terabyte library of songs for a flat monthly fee.
The American leadership understands that in order to keep consumerism alive, new technology MUST BE SUPPRESSED. It's much better to turn a backward nation into a sea of sweatshops and factories, because then you create a nation of consumers, feeding the whole capitalist/consumerist infrastructure.
As soon as you start to replace people with robots (who presumably will not be purchasing the cars, TVs, t-shirts, etc that they make), you have to find some other way for the wealthy to make money off of unemployed people.
Hey, I know! Reality TV! You could pay everyone to have their own reality TV show! Wuhu! I figured it out! Then there would be NO PRIVACY AT ALL FOR ANYONE WHO ISN'T OTHERWISE WEALTHY. I for one welcome Big Brother. Don't you?
Is it difficult to create a game that'll run on multiple systems? Isn't it possible to use libraries that cross platforms so that you can release versions for systems other than windows?
I ask this because I intend to start developing a game, and noticed that every single game on this indie list is released ONLY for windows.
I work for a healthcare company, and I have one piece of advice:
Focus on telling the customers what they want to hear. Better patient care, increased patient load per employee, better morale among clinical staff, etc.
The specific technology used is meaningless to them. And since healthcare lags so far behind any other industry, you can clearly see the next five years of what they'll be using for infrastucture right now in other industries.
If you have any interest in it, I believe that nurses will make more than programmers in ten years.
Of course project leads/development directors/etc. will probably still make more, but how much more? Are the available tools and libraries making monkey's work out of application development?

Some employers do think they own everything you create while you're employed with them.
Case in point: the company I work for.
Now if we could only get the GNOME/KDE factions to combine,
And in a perfect world, that would mean Gnome goes away.

It can't be far off that the actors get replaced by finely tuned CG characters. Then directing will be a lot easier for geeks like us.
So if good acting and direction is all this film lacks, WE'RE SO CLOSE TO SAYING GOODBYE TO THE FILM STUDIOS!

One of the best kinds of people to have on staff are those who have learned, the hard way, what NOT to do. :)

I, for one, welcome our new Napster overlords.

Go and flame me now.
But would it be worth the effort?
The fool that belives he lives in a free country.
A fool indeed.
Why should we worry about the habitability of this rock 100 years from now?
In 100 years humans will have [nearly] perfected the art and science of space habitation.

I have to choose among so many good choices.
Work: Corporate America in your cube :)

I find that a strong anti-depressant makes me a much better employee. Effexor is a reuptake inhibitor of seratonin, norepinephrin, and dopamine.
:)
The result is artificially high morale and an incredible tolerance for insult and abuse.
If marijuana were legal, the shows they approve of could be entertaining.

(And yes, I work for a healthcare company)
This is my fault. Six months ago I wrote an email to Sun saying that if they freed Solaris it might gain developer support. (true story)
Where's my mod points when I need 'em?
Insightful? Try funny. Actually quite funny.
Evolution is never "in balance," chicken little.
