What responsibility must a woman fulfil to be granted the right not to be raped?

I'd have to check on what responsibilities a man has to fulfill in order for them to not be raped. They "should" be similar. When you say "right", you don't mean "guarantee", right? I don't think there's anything that can provide for that short of the deities coming back down to hold our hands and smite evil doers in the old school way.

As for the wording of rights versus privileges, my thought is the following: There isn't a huge amount of difference, only that the word privilege implies that it can be taken (or given) away more easily. In the US, we have many privileges that can be lost if we don't pay attention. How many articles has /. seen about the erosion of our "rights" due to things like the Patriot Act, EULAs and the like? It might just be my play on words, but I think looking at it in that way might provide some with a new perspective on the subject.

  9. Re:Since when are rights deserved? on Does A Company Deserve the Same Privacy Rights As You? · · Score: 1

Rights are not "rights". They're privileges that we agree to bestow each other. The right to free speech is pretty easily circumvented by a baseball bat to the face. As for corporations, the question might not be "do they deserve this right" as much as "what responsibility will they take up with this"? The right/freedom to bear arms is carefully balanced against the responsibility to go shooting people randomly and such. That's why it'll always be a sensitive topic Americans. Why revoke a right for the many when only abused by the few?

When selling to a non-tech person, though, such things make little difference. Most aren't savvy enough to know the difference and mostly look at the number of cores and speeds as final arbiters on performance. It's like explaining that while a motorcycle engine may have higher RPMs, a truck has more torque and can move big loads better. Hell, that's the simplest analogy I know for modern chip comparisons and it still goes over some people's heads.

Then, of course, is the SUV-that-never-goes-offroad-computing crowd that throw down big bucks so they can have 3D accelerated, multicore/non-multithreaded MS Spider Solitaire. God bless them.

But if there's something like that that does need to be kept secret, it should have to go through a fucking closed session of Congress and specifically be classified that way. No, not 'notify' half a dozen people, and threaten them if they tell anyone, the congress should actually vote on it, or decide to just tell everyone. Giving the damn branch of government, hell, the specific group that did it, the power to classify it, is utterly absurd. And it's doubly absurd to let them assert they have a right to keep it secret in court.

Of all the posting responders so far, you're the only one that proposed an alternative to the current system of classifying information. A discussion on the pros/cons and implementation methods of it would be fun. I'd love to see how we'd keep the politicians from utilizing the information for their own benefits (geopolitical information could make them lots of money, not to mention "hot button" issues for election years). Somebody please mod DavidTC here up.
