The Acid2 test is not something specific to konqueror, it's a test for browsers in general, it has been covered here a lot lately, just search, or read the site more often.
Safari is based on Konqueror, Apple publishes it modifications of Safari and people tries to backport the useful ones to Konqueror. There has been troubles about this, since apple does a few things that make it hard to reuse the code, again, you are either trolling, or you really don't read slashdot, has been covered before, ___lots___.
They don't match the definition of Freedom. If something is FREE, i can do whatever i want with it, as long as i keep it free (So other people have the same Freedoms that i have). The license for Pico and Pine doesn't allow modification or redistribution of modified copys, yes, i can suggest modifications, just like i can suggest modifications to Microsoft's products, but it's up to the autors to use them or not, it also has extra limitations that make it NOT FREE. Besides, you say it doesn't match Stallman's standards, that's not actually true, RMS created the Free Software movement, and we owe him a lot, but you are not forced to agree with him, or to even listen to what he thinks about some specific piece of software, but what you have to take into account, is that the mayority of Free Software is under the GPL license, if you create software that is under a license that is incompatible with the license of most Free Software, including some mayor pieces of software that are the base of this comunity, then your software is not really Free, regardless of what your license says.
Yup, it's actually closed, just like pine, they are written by the same people at the University of Washington. It's a big shame that most distributions include them by default, in many cases, it's the only, or one of a very few elements tainting the distribution.
You seem to actually understand why it's important to use Free Software, so let me point out the use of the word "Linux" in your reply, which is actually misleading, since it doesn't refer to the whole OS (Linux is only the kernel), and, specially, the people involved in the Linux development are not actually interested in freedom, and they use and actually promote the use of proprietary software that runs on their kernel. Let me suggest you use the name GNU/Linux to refer to your OS, you are showing more precisely what OS you use by using that name, and you are showing that you use it because it's FREE AS IN FREEDOM, and not only because it's technically better, by saying GNU you are helping our fight for freedom, and supporting this filosofy.
You can't compare Pico and Emacs, Pico is a SIMPLE, BASIC, text editor, for people with little or no unix experience. Emacs is a customizable, fast text editor, Pico is for simplicity, Emacs is for Performance.
Not only that!, he's using XEmacs under Windows, if you say "Emacs is the best text editor", you mean GNU Emacs under the GNU Operating System. Besides, Emacs is not the best text editor, it's just the ONLY text editor;-)
Vow of poverty?, why would he do such a thing?. I Was talking about the fact that he did what he considered was right, regardless of the fact that he would lose all he had, and he did, his current economic position is not important. AND, BTW, he charges for his speaches when the organization that he is speaking for has the money to pay for it, he came here to Argentina, he gaved his speach at the local GLUG For FREE.
I Don't see that as brainwashing, i see it as showing the things the way they are. If you beleive in a stupid superiorbeing that doesn't exists, and that is being utilized by the big powers that destroy your country day after day to justify their acts, then you won't get a damn thing. But if you beleive in the man that risked his life and gived years of sacrifice to save your country...
I Don't see what is wrong with that little story, anyway, most of this stuff are just urban legends.
Parent lives in the USA; he knows nothing about sacrifice, effort, or anything else that is not done for a profit. They cannot understand how someone would leave his comfortable life to go fight for what he beleives is the true, because the 99% of the US population woudln't do it. That's why they carry arround t-shirts with the face of the Che Guevara without knowing whom he really was, or why it was important what he did. Try explaining them that both Guevara and Castro were born in well educated, rich familys, and that they both had a degree, when in the USA people in that situation are right-wing bastards, and people not in that situation are just willing to be in that situation. It's the same reason why most people in the USA doesn't understand RMS. They just can't figure out how would someone do something without expecting a personal profit, that is, $$$.
Their setups are really brain-dead, in Unix they create small/usr partitions, and on windows, they create a C partition that is too small also, and so you run out of space quickly with logs and swapspace... Once i managed to install Slackware remotely over the brain-dead redhat 8 installation they shipped by default at the time, i have to find the time to turn that experience into a howto or something...
OTH this kind of remote install is allmost impossible with windorze, and using a disk partitioning tool over a machine you can only access over VNC is just plain stupid.
No, there are no other C compilers that can compile Linux correctly, they just won't work, only GCC. And. it also needs a build environment that is usualy GNU.
And, besides, the project that created all of this, and that inspired Linux, and inspired berkeley to open their OS, was GNU.
And Linux is nothing of an OS without GNU, actually, without GNU, you can't even compile Linux. And, besides, the idea of GNU, was to create a basic system and let people contribute to it, this is in the manifest, and if people put their software under the GPL, they are saying that it can be used with the GNU OS...
The Original idea was the GNU Project, to create the GNU Operating System. The GPL was created and many people then started writing software that worked with the GNU OS, so i'm using the GNU OS, with many contributions that were made to it.
Besides, if you took everything that is not GNU and put it together, you don't get an OS. OTH if you took everything that IS GNU, you can have a complete Operating System, with compilers, a libc, a shell, etc, etc, etc.
So, yes, GNU is the OS, and we use many software that was designed to work with GNU.
Ah so what your saying is PHBs should relax because a lot of GNU/Linux was written by pot smoking hippies at a good American University.
What i'm saying is that i care about freedom, about the software itself, about the pleasure of creating it, and about the pleasure of using it, PHBs can go fuck themselves, they are not needed, and Free Software wasn't created to please them.
1 - I Run the GNU Operating System. Linux is just my kernel. 2 - I'm not saying that it's unethical to use things created by big corporations (That would be actually a critic to the whole capitalist system, and yes, i actually think that the capitalism system is in itself corrupt and unethical, but we live under it, and it's a whole different topic to the one we are dealing with right now). What i'm saying is that it's unethical to use products that makes use of copyright law and other laws designed to take your freedom as a user, as a scientist, and as a human being awawy, because by doing so you are helping them to continue doing it.
I Wouldn't mind using a good system, like, for example, Solaris, if sun would provide it under conditions that woudln't affect my personal freedoms or the freedom of someone else.
Right now, the only system that fullfils my ethical and technical specs is GNU.
1 - I Apologize 2 - Don't you think it's scary the fact that i have archived tons of posts that just says something pretty similar to this, that WEREN'T joking?
I'm usually pretty open and don't prejudge people, but lately in/. i have seen such things...
And about comparing RMS to jesus, off course you cannot compare them. jesus was an ezquisofrenic that thought he was the child of a nonexistan super-being, RMS is a scientist that started a revolution that changed the world for GOOD, leading us to a new era of knowledge and freedom, jesus & CO. OTH leaded the world to a dark era of mithology, undiscriminated massive assasination, and killing of knowledge. Don't you dare to compare RMS to such a bastard.
WHT are you talking about?, first of all, comunism is a political and economic system, just like your stinking capitalism. Whether you like it or not, it's far more fair than capitalism. Yes, communism has failed just like capitalism, but at least communism is designed to triunf, and with the people in mind. Capitalism is designed to make the rich profit more, so they both failed (actually the human being failed), but capitalism is esentially evil, and communism is esentially utopic. If you choose communism, you may fail because the human being is esentially corruptable and egoist. If you choose capitalism, you will fail because the system is designed to make the richs richer and more powerfull and the poor poorer and defenseless.
About RMS, what are you talking about?, all he owns is his laptop, a few books, no more than 3 t-shirts, and his incredible brain. His life is GNU and the FSF; and is the most honest and generous guy i have ever met.
You should be ashame of yourself for talking about him like this, taking into account all that he has done for you and for me.
You are not taking into account the fact that HE started the cause, and that the license, and the funding manifest of our cause was written by him, also he is the one that kept the cause alive in the early years, so please read before you post or just shut up. And mentioning his body odor is a FALACY. Please read some logic also.
P.S: I Know him personally, and yes, he doesn't like to bath, just like most of the other true hippys still out there, but he doesn't smell, and is a fucking gentlemen.
Unix teached me how to code, how to maintain a secure server, how to work faster, how to automate simple and complex tasks through shell. Unix changed the way i think, the way i see problems, and the way it solved them. And more importantly, Unix feeds me and my family.

Not only that!, he's using XEmacs under Windows, if you say "Emacs is the best text editor", you mean GNU Emacs under the GNU Operating System. ;-)
Besides, Emacs is not the best text editor, it's just the ONLY text editor
Does that mean that we slashdoted the flower? ;-)
I'm, that's why it's +1, Funny :) :)
If i werent, it would be +1, Poor Guy.
And i i were a woman, it would be -1, not understood
No, he didn't. But i am interested in his work and his ideas, not in his personal hygiene

And you say Democrats are not right-wing?.
Let me tell you something, your system is not bipartidist, is monopartidist, your countrys policys hasn't changed in decades, they are the same thing.
I Don't see that as brainwashing, i see it as showing the things the way they are. Mabe you need to find a windows maps software, so you can see that there is a world outside the USA and that not everyone is a native english talker.
