    The Google car requires pre-mapping beyond the basic Google maps style mapping. That is the dirty secret they don't mention.

    That is why the industry is pushing so heavily into the cloud/SaaS/pay monthly model. It is more profitable to get everyone to pay a (many) fee(s) per month to use their computer. It really is a corporations dream.

    That is because of dealer markup. Taxi companies don't pay that markup when they refresh their fleets.

    Good idea but autonomous cars is about 40 years away from being realistic. I am sure people will protest "but Google has a car that works now!". No. They really don't. They have a car that can navigate through heavily pre-mapped city streets. If they turn that car loose in the middle of Chicago it won't work. But the idea of using electric cars for human-driven taxis is a good one. In fact that is one of the reasons why so many taxis are hybrids already. Another reason is that hybrids can use the HOV in some areas.

    Actually this should be modded up. You should never implement what customers say they want. You should find out what they want. And definitely don't ask the IT people. They have a very narrow view of the world.

    That is because every ISP keeps track of every site you visit. Although they say "does not identify specific websites" what they mean is that they don't break it down TO YOU by specific websites. They just know that if you are sending traffic to/from *.facebook.com you are doing "Social Media". "Youtube" goes into the Video counter, etc.

    This story is way too technical to the Slashdot readers of today. We would rather talk about CS education, global warming and women in computing. Also, where has Ethan been? I miss his posts on astronomy. I can understand them real good. It is like he wrote it just for normal people like me!

    It has never been a "right" to drive on public roads. If you built the road on your land, you can drive on it.

  23. Even if you are going through a VPN your provider knows your true IP. It has to, that is how the packets arrive it your device.

    No they don't. You don't need a warrant to work in plainclothes as a cop, or in an unmarked car to catch speeders.
