Give up giving suggestions to MikeFM, he sounds like one of those whiners where "things just don't work for him" and "that wouldn't work for me" and "I've tried that, and it doesn't work"
Meanwhile, immigrants are coming here that can't speak english, don't know anyone and without a penny and flourishing. Apparently it "works for them".
I do. Java is simply a language - nothing else. JVM is a virtual machine. JINI is a technology that uses Java as its base language and runs on a JVM..NET is an umbrella term that covers many different tech from M$..NET can be utilized from many different languages (C#, C++, C, VB, whatever)
If you invent a phonograph, you make it, sell it, done. Not so for software. Software is a stack-up of tons and tons of previous "inventions" (algorithms, or ways of doing something)."
Incorrect. Almost all inventions build upon the inventions of others.
Usually these start-ups get bought out by the big players for a crapload of money, so everyone is happy. I am sure TiVO will get bought out by a player sometime (MS, Sony, AOL/TW, etc)
LOL. After that statement, a million philosophy majors vanished in a puff of smoke.
That is a good response to those who would moan on about such silly issues.
I work at MARC as a sysadmin. It is not that we are lazy, it is just that we are understaffed and we cannot push out patches to all the machines in the network. We just do not have the resources!
You get food stamps and have a computer with internet access and work on an opensource project?
Christ. What a system.

I am glad this was clarified for you. It is a common misconception by the clueless that .NET is simply a COM wrapper, which it is not.

Java is a language. .NET is not. .NET is a set of technologies.

It was insightful because it bashed the U.S. and extolled the virtues of the E.U.
:-)
Please keep up!
Eric,
Is Daryl right? Are you being bankrolled by IBM? Please respond, we need to know who are our friends and who are not.
"I have several advantages when working with teams: ;)"
1. My great personality
Obviously.
Yeah, I would be very careful with ThinkGeek. They are apparently having some cash issues (VaLinux) and therefore are not very consumer-friendly...
Oh, I didn't realize this was the backend software.
Yes I did! Thanks a lot, if I had bought at ThinkGeek I would be out a lot of money...
Thank you so much!!! You just saved me a bundle. I am planning on getting 10 of these for my project...
"PRISMIQ MediaManager software requires Win98SE or later..."
You mean I have to run crappy Windows to get this working???? Please confirm.
How is it $189? buy.com has it for $249, even with a $50 off coupon (which I don't see) it would still be $199. Thanks!
Other than "available on thinkgeek", there are no other differentiating factors mentioned. Got any others?
Well, isn't it? What else makes this of any interest? Would this be mentioned if it wans't being sold on thinkgeek?
So a media server product is for sale. So? There are many other similar products for sale as well. What makes this special?
Even funnier: here is his first story headline: "Google rawks!" :-))
How very 14 year old of him. As a 14 year old (almost) I am offended.
What does putting satellites in near earth orbit have to do with space exploration?

Yes, but consider this: you have an easy job, lots of benefits, TONS of vacation, little stress, good work environment.
I worked in higher ed for a while and although the pay was low, the rest of the benefits made up for it.

Maybe if he PAID the developers to develop these apps they would be there.
Really all I got from this is that he likes OSS because it is good enough for his uses and it is free (as in $$$).
There is no mention of how he is going to give back to the OSS developers. That is key.
