  1. Re:multiple withdrawals on Best Way To Beat A Caffeine Addiction? · · Score: 1

Caffeine is a diuretic, meaning, it increases your urine output and thus, dehydrates you. Basically, it crenates your cells (imagine squeezing a water soaked sponge) and being dehydrated causes a whole mess of problems (e.g., dry skin, headaches). Why does caffeine make us feel better and why is it included in many pain relievers? Because it temporarily dilates our blood vessels, releasing pressure it also stimulates pleasure neurotrasmitters.

Another thing to take into consideration, especially for females, is that caffeine can deplete calcium stores in our bones which may increase your chance for osteoporosis.

As with any drug, habitual consumption leads to tolerance and of course, we all metabolize differently based on weight, levels of activity, genetics. While I am not a physician, I do have significant clinical experience and I would recommend that you gradually decrease your caffeine consumption over a 7 day period while consuming water. You do not need to drink copious amounts of water. There is such a thing as over-hydration and it can be dangerous as it affects the sodium and potassium levels in your plasma. 48-64 ounces of non-caffeinated beverages (water, tea, juice) should be fine.

    Good Luck!

I live in the Detroit area and have been keeping up with this story - and I think this is bull$hit.

First of all, there is no mention of what OS they will run, and if they do run Windows, which they most likely will, who will be responsible for patches, updates, virus definitions. Will the kids learn to defrag. their own hard drives? Can they take them home? What about monitoring? Does the school have keyloggers or keep track of cookies, history files? What if the student uses the computer (school property) to do something illegal (online gambling, pr0n, whatever...)

I believe I read an earlier article in either the News or Free Press that interviewed a family..the student indicated she couldn't wait to get her school laptop since her sister is always using their home PC.

I'd like to know more information before the kids get their hands on these computers.

I'm going to have to agree on the atrocious aspect. My Sony Clie looks better than that thing. And well, as a chick, I think PDA's should have function AND form.

Hopefully, the next version is a little easier on the eyes.

Which makes me wonder if PDA's will ever be "skinnable" like some cell phones are.

I like the car metaphor for computers...I think it is common knowledge that the oil needs to be changed +/- 3000 miles.

Is the idea of regular computer maintenance only for the tech-savvy? Perhaps not. Changing the perceptions of new/novice computer users can change - whether this is from the friend that builds you a PC to the salesperson at the store.

Perhaps vendors need to distribute a "Maintenance Checklist". There are certain things that one must do to their computer on a semi-regular basis. Whether it be cleaning the pet hair from fan intakes or applying virus defs and patches.

I really believe in personal accountability. If you purchase a car, you're responsible for the oil, tires etc....a computer is not the same as a toaster. It's a complex piece of equipment. It needs to be treated as such.
