I'm curious why some submissions carry the disclaimer, "Slashdot and NewsForge are both part of OSTG." Can anyone shed some light on this? Just curious.:)
Can't even get the screenshots to load. While it may be an anti-gimp, it probably is also an anti-photoshop. However, the site is now not responding, so I can't check features and specifications. Did anyone manage to get a mirror set up?
Yeah, another example of the government spinning an almost failure into a success. Had it exploded on the pad, they would have said, "Despite the absense of take-off, we believe the launch was a success. We are ready to commit billions of tax dollars on this rocket. I think they are so optimistic because Boeing had trouble finding commercial customers for the maiden flight, so the govt. had to finance almost the whole thing. As a result, they don't want to admit that it was a partial failure.
It was not completely successful. The two dummy satellites did not make it to orbit due to a problem with the first stage. You can read about it here: Boeing Rocket Launch
Maybe at least two months ago? Regardless, this is pretty neat. I can picture a martian standing there with a piece of cloth. Every time he wipes, he expects something in return. Alas, the rover ignores the poor martian and spares not three Martian cents.
C'mon man, this is preaching to the choir. Everyone who reads Slashdot already knows these things. The submission stinks of Slashvertisement than anything worthy as news or the front page.
Better yet, upload one's brain contents into the computer and live forever! Seriously, there are far too many problems with organ transplants, let alone the MOST complex organ, the brain. One step at a time.
Yes, this is ridiculous. Will Zaphod really only have one visible head? That just kills one of the central characters. Who needs all the CG in the world when they can't affix an extra head on an actor? The BBC Miniseries version of the second head was pretty stupid, but I'd take that over a "head in the nostril" one.
It is the first move away from silver stuff. Design always moves in cycles. Look at 20s ads and see how much they resemble flash print ads from now. And don't get me started on the minimalist movement. It's all rehash, and this just paves the way back to silly, flashy, colory 80s industrial design. Bleh!
Not! The author of the FAQ must really want the other torrent sites to disappear, as well, or else he wouldn't be listing them for the MPAA to hunt after.
I mean, c'mon. They were ostentatiously peddling links to illegal stuff. It was only a matter of time until the MPAA got its act together to scare these sites into shutting down, with little more than a threat. The submission of these sites (pun unintended) is what's scary.
Fuck them. Besides, what difference would it make? They're not using the "current" system, anyway, so nothing would change. This is not to say this will be adopted. This is just stupid.
Well, duh! That's what makes this whole thing to sad. The author of this calendar wants everyone to adopt this in one year. Either he is nuts or he is more connected than any of us, but judging by his website, I think this is going the way of Esperanto.
Yes, and outside of nerdville, who gives a shit about Firefox? What OSS has to do is release ads to TELL people how bad IE is, not how good Mozilla is alongside. SCARE people into realizing that their entire way of life is AT RISK if they continue to use IE.
I'm sure MS thought, "Let's worry about that AFTER Internet Explorer goes above 50% on the usage charts." Then, it was too late. Any sufficiently popular application is destined to meet the same fate. Hell, considering the number of users and errors, I think Firefox is actually doing pretty bad with its recent exploits, compared to IE, which has perhaps hundreds of millions of users.
Before GPS, pilots rarely flew into enemy territories. GPS is a tool, not a magical device that does everything for every one all the time. Besides, if your RTFA, you will see that this can be TARGETED, meaning ALL civilian GPS systems would not cease if a particular area were to come under attack or if such a threat were perceived to be substantive.
What occupied area? WTF are you talking about? If 20,000 people are at risk, do you go ahead and find the one or two exceptions that would not benefit from this? Besides, it is only temporary, and it can be targeted, as well.

I agree. I expected it to be more elliptical and flat than round. At least that was the author's description of the craft.

I think that's the pod-thing in which Slartibartfast gives Arthur the ride to his lab. It better NOT be the Heart of Gold!
I'm glad you found it funny. :o

So it makes coffee, too? Take that, Apple!
Just the kind of uninformed reply I'd expect from a Slashdotter who has his head up Tux's ass.
Napster killed the free MP3 system? What planet are you living on?

Except that you AND the ceiling will rotating in the same direction. :)

Newsflash: IE is also free.
