Do you have information about deaths in British hospitals? Without anything to compare to, the number of American deaths isn't very useful.

"The government consists of a gang of men exactly like you and me. They have, taking one with another, no special talent for the business of government; they have only a talent for getting and holding office. Their principal device to that end is to search out groups who pant and pine for something they can't get and to promise to give it to them. Nine times out of ten that promise is worth nothing. The tenth time is made good by looting A to satisfy B. In other words, government is a broker in pillage, and every election is sort of an advance auction sale of stolen goods."[H. L. Mencken]

  5. Why did the subject change? on No Same Sex Marriage In World of Warcraft? · · Score: 1

The original story wasn't about "gay marriage." Why is it now? Someone advertised their guild relative to a sexual preference, about as out of place in a fantasy RPG as advertising a guild relative to they type of car you drive or your political leaning. Trying to shift it over to a gay marriage issue isn't going to solve anything.

The acronym "GBLT" stands for "Gay-Bi-Lesbian-Transgendered". Let's break it down. In this reference, "gay" isn't refering to people who are happy and joyful, it's referring to men who have sex with each other, particularly anal and oral sex. If this point were to have been made in a public chat channel in an online RPG like WoW, Blizzard's reaction would have been understood. Trying to hide this behind a politically correct acronym doesn't change the meaning of "gay" in the context it's used in. Ditto for "lesbian" and "bi". "Transgendered" is potentially more offensive, as it often refers to people who have undergone surgery to change their sex without some underlying medical reason. Even if the procedure is innocent (the person is a hermaphrodite to one extent or another and is choosing what sex they want to be physically), it still doesn't have a place being broadcast in a public chat channel in an online RPG like WoW.

Let's look at the other side of the coin. A guild decides it's going to advertise itself as not "straight-only" but "straight-friendly". This is just as unacceptable. It's making a reference to sex that doesn't belong in the context of the game. By zeroing in on being "straight", you are making direct references to acts of sex, something I get quite enough of on television and radio. We're playing this game to get AWAY from RL issues for a little while. Please, don't bring your RL issues with you.

Google won't make the world a better place either way. If and when the people of China are ready for an open internet, they'll get it. Until then, those that want to do business in China should respect its rules, just as those that wish to do business in the US should do the same.

  11. It is Tourette's on Neural Feedback Training as Therapy for ADHD? · · Score: 1

Just a few things to go over. Those symptoms (the grunts, ticks, etc) are Tourette's syndrome and are not symptoms of the ADHD medication. I know this because I grew up with that form of Tourette's and have never taken medication to treat it. The vast majority of those that have Tourettes never scream obscenities so stop watching Duece Bigalow over and over ;).

As far as the Neural Feedback treatment, scrap that and go for martial arts. I recommend Tai Chi. Most with Tourette's Syndrome also exhibit ADHD "symptoms" which can be brought under control via the phenomena of neuroplasticity. To put it simply, your daughter's brain is wired for high performance. Her environment is likely not suitable for this kind of mind. As a result, she's bursting at the seams.

The neural pathways in the brain constantly grow new connections to increase how efficiently things operate (a process that's faster in children than in adults). This is why over time, any skill you practice becomes easier to do. Your daughter's pathways happen to do this at a much faster rate than most so things are occurring in a haphazard fashion. Ritalin tries to address this not by attempting to apply some kind of discipline to it but rather by dulling the entire process. Imagine her as a driver and her nervous system as a high performance car. Untrained, the driver is likely to make a lot of mistakes with that car. Ritalin approaches this problem by deflating the tires, putting low-octane gas in the tank, and applying a governor to the engine. Sure, the driver will then likely make fewer mistakes but how good are these changes for the car itself? Martial arts, on the other hand, approach this problem by disciplining the driver to harness the power of the car as a whole. This is accomplished without compromising the integrity of the mind. I've never had Neural Feedback Therapy before but I have a funny feeling martial arts are probably a lot more fun :)

Tai Chi is my recommendation only due to my own experiences with it. Assuming she's between five and seven years old, a variant of Kung Fu might be more fun for her and just as rewarding. Many people practice Tai Chi along with other arts so mixing things up can be good.

Martial arts are an enjoyable, natural, convenient way to bring the mind into focus without having to resort to drugs. They can be practiced nearly anywhere at any time and also help to build self esteem and overall health. Enroll her over the summer and see if it makes a difference for the next school year.

Do a google search for "neuroplasticity" to see how that works.

The IT organization I belong to must meet its objectives without spending money. To do this, we all make due with what we have. To this day, I'm still using a Dell GX1 (350 mhz P-II) running Win2K. As long as I maintain it properly, it does its job just fine. For spare parts, we strip from the "bone pile." In a real bind, we've been known to call the IT departments of other companies to buy used parts from them. Though many in the company gripe over our frugal ways, we're meeting our objectives and contributing to our ninth straight profitable quarter.

When we absolutely must make a purchase, we can get brand new 2.0+ Ghz machines from Dell and/or HP with WinXP pre-installed for around $450.

If anyone has a real-world example of how their organization is making ends meet, PC or Mac, let's hear it. If there are Mac shops out there in similar circumstances, hearing from you would go a long way toward convincing some of us that it's possible to keep going when the "chips are down."
