Actually that is completely false. India did not use any of the the materials stipulated for peaceful use for making bombs. It used only the waste produced by its own uranium which was not under any treaty. India wanted to give the waste back to USA but neither Canada nor US wanted it back and asked it to do with it as it pleases (ref. 1967 CIRUS2 agreement). When China went Nuclear India had no option but to pursue this road for its own defense.
> The only solution I see is for India to reabsorb Pakistan and Bangladesh
Are you nuts? I am an Indian and I dont want ever any one to have to deal with those crazy nutjobs! India has a lot of work to do on its own and half the bangladeshis live in India anyway.
So NO never ever do we want any part of those countries back.
IMHO the next or the only logical evolution of web has to follow some amount of context association for all contents deductive or with an externally imposed semantics. In other words, there must be a way to associate a web document or any other artifact to a context or category. Thats the way our human brain perceives things and thats the way web has evolved so far and will continue to. Semantic web is not an immediate future... but it sure is the destiny.
With all due respect,India doesnt have "STEAM" trains:) We electrified or use Diesel Electric locomotives for almost 30 yrs now. You are right however in your overall assessment that India still have many challenges left and still poor farmers are committing suicide in some states and there is a huge lack of adequate infrastructure specially in roads and energy for rapid high intensity industrialization. However it is improving and peoples' quality of life has improved and continues to improve.
When India became an independent nation after 200 yrs of slavery to Brits and 700 to muslims, it had 20% people over proverty line, 44% infant mortality rate and 35% literacy. In roughly 50 yrs they achieved, 75% over poverty line, 21% infant mortality rate and 65% literacy with many states like Kerala and West Bengal with 100% literacy.
They launched a 100 days of guaranteed work per year program for poor workers in villages that is being copied by countries like China and Brazil. And while the festering problems with head in sand nations like Pakistan continues, India lifts more and more people out of poverty every hour.
Considering it was only 50 yrs and they didnt have a Marshall Plan and billions of dollars to spare, I think they have done well and are on the right track. These miniature space launches are just morale boosters, since any enslaved country requires such acts like going to space or blasting a nuke or landing on moon to feel equal, its in my humble opinion has not much to do with others as it has to do with the people in India itself.
"What it is bothering me is this statement that it is illegal for an american to work in India. "
It is complete BS. Many American citizens work in India and has always done so. See my post and others posts regarding this.
It is absolutely untrue that americans can not work in India. Hell when I was working there in 1992 my CTO was an american. Every MNC that goes to India has a number of American citizens as it's staff. Even my company (here in the US) has 3 vps and countless managers shiped from here on deputation to work there. atleast few of them I know, decided to stay back.
Also getting a work permit to work in India is a piece of cake compared to the H1B for USA
It's entirely possible to work in India

No Americans Need Apply

Any American can work in India provided they
a) have a job there
b) their employer is willing to sponsor their work visa.
You can talk to any Indian consulate for this. The whole process takes a week or two with all the documentations available.
Last time I went to B'lore (2001) I found many Ukranians and Russians there working for the software companies. If they can do it so can you.
This sort of articles with a half assed research to find a scapegoat dont bode well in terms of your own philosophies.
Remember, not a single Indian arrived in the USA unless an American company sponsored them to come and work here. I liked what the CEO of Infosys said once about all these jobs moving there.. "They came to save money and stayed for quality"
Frankly I think this is an unstoppable trend and in a global economy and in the "so called" free market, this is entirely expected. Also some mentalities matter as well.
No one gave a damn when the 3rd world countries were starving in the 60s and America and Canada were dumping wheat filled ships in the atlantic. So why should anyone care what happens to their workforce now ?

Mostly they come here to study because they cant get into Masters or PhD in their own countries.
