  1. Re:18-35 #13 CHILD ABUSE on Help Select Questions for Bush and Kerry · · Score: 0

To all three who have replied to this, I have to disagree. First of all, the suppositions of this post are all too true. I know that firsthand. If you want to nix it on the grounds that it's too emotionally charged, we may as well nix the abortion debate, the gay marriage debate, the debate about the war, the debate about the genocide in Rwanda, etc. Let's face it: Any time we are debating someone's beliefs it's going to be emotionally charged. As for there being nothing we can do about it, there is. It's called education. Dennis Kucinich had a plan for a department that would be a little like homeland security, but they would be on a much more local level. They would decide how to help police officers, security guards, etc. Part of the duties of this department would be research and prevention of domestic violence, rape / sexual abuse, and child abuse. These things are much more widespread than anyone wants to believe, and they need to be addressed.

Actually, MS is charging now for the security patch for the worm... I work in electronics at a Staples store, we did have the patch on a CD and would make copies of it for our customers, but we had to stop doing that when MS started charging for it.

Don't say that someone is not a victim... you can't know. I am a victim of rape when I was only 6, and an emotionally and sexually abusive relationship when I was 16, which went on for a year. You mention that victims are prone to become abusers, but you failed to mention that abusers are prone to do it again, and that victims are prone to be victimized again. When I move into a new neighborhood, I want to know if there are any sex offenders around. I want to know who to watch so that I am not victimized again. When I have children, I want to be able to tell them not to go to the neighbors house by themselves if they are a sex offender. I wish we could do that with murderers, too.

Don't be quick to say who's a victim and who's not, everyone reacts differently.

  4. Re:simple question: why is sex bad? on U.S. Supreme Court To Rule On Online Porn Law · · Score: 0

The thing people are forgetting is that the porn out there isn't just sex. There are many S&M sites, scat sites, bestiality sites, even rape porn sites. I think children should be protected from that.

Along those lines, the COPA is too broad. I agree that sex in and of itself is not bad. But, consider the child aged 12-16 who has been raped, maybe by a family member. They go in search of help without having to tell anyone... they google for rape support. The first 2-3 pages are legitimate help sites, but then they start seeing rape porn sites. That would be disturbing for anyone, but think of a child who isn't even emotionally capable of handling what happened to them, and then seeing that. So, in comes the COPA, which blocks sites like that. Great! That's good news! But then it also blocks online support groups and resources. Now the child is left to either try to tell someone or handle it on their own. Both instances are really scarey, and can have serious consequences.

Long story short, I think the COPA is good, but it needs seriously narrowed down. And, think of the whole picture before you cut things down.

That's only part of it. Yes, perfect pitch is the ability to know the pitch of a note being played without reference. But, a person with perfect pitch can also tell you if that tone is in tune or not. So, they may not have been acurate in calling it perfect pitch, but they weren't entirely wrong. =)

well, I have talked to many people about switching from windows to linux, and they all have told me that, while windows really pisses them off, they'd rather stick with something they know. That's why the stats given really surprise me. Also, it may be easy for them to download the OS, but that doesn't take installing it into account.
