Some Moderators seriously do NOT understand the use of the "redundant" modifier in answers to a "Ask Slashdot" topic.
The parent topinc is NOT redundant. It answers the topic, with a good answer (google docs) and brings some further information to the table (simultaneous live edits)
Although it sometimes can be annoying to see multiple posts with the same suggestion (similar to a "me too"). However in this case, if you look carefully you can see the parent post, and most others who suggested Google Docs, have all posted at the same time (around 8:22pm). It is therefore reasonable to assume that this is not intended to be a "me too" post. Therefore it is unfair to mark this as redundant.
Also take into account, the person who asked the question may be looking at popularity,a nd many people suggesting "google docs", together with WHY, may help that person make a better decision.
I hope the "redundant" mod given to the parent is properly meta moderated, as it is unfair.
Barcodes do NOT carry price information in the UK either. In fact, some products carry the same bar code in the UK as in the USA.
Except in very certain situations, where for example, an item in a supermarket had an "ad-hoc" price reduction (as opposed to a normal sale/promotion), there would be a "stick on" barcode which has the new price, which the cashier would first scan, then peel off the sticker, before scanning the product code.
Another unique case I would imagine anything bought from the ad-hoc sections of a supermarket, such as the Deli, may have either price, or at least weight, since those items are sold by the Kg, and they cannot have a different barcode for every possible combination.
But to say in Europe they have price on the barcode is a lie. and I your post is DEFINATELY not informative.
As someone pointed out, the UK gallon is nearly 20% larger than the US gallon. However you are right about general efficiency though. But again, it may be more due to nessesity. LArge cars are awkward in our smaller streets, and MUCH hiher fuel prices, so smaller lighter cars are more common here.
Also as another person said, we have fuel efficiency meters in most decent new cars these days, and as such, people naturally gravitate to working out how efiecently they can drive their cars more efficiently.
Recently, I have had to drive to Leeds, a round trip of 400 miles. I drove on my Jaguar X-type desiel, which is actually rated quite well on the fuel economy side.
It is rated at approx 55- 60mpg on the the motorway (highway) assuming a speed of 60mph. This, with real world tests is almost accurate, as I generally get between 53 and 58 at 60mph on cruise control (6th gear). at 70mph (legal speed limit) I get about 40 - 45 mpg (usually closer to 45). Howver, in the slipstream of a lorry (semi truck), the efficiency goes up to about 80+ mpg (i have seen it hit 88, but that was also due to a slight downhill gradient).
now over a 400mile roundtrip of 95% motoways, and a clear road, and desel fuel hitting nearly £6 per Gallon, the savings are nothing to be sniffed at. (between 45 and 80+ mpg in the SAME car)
without these meters though, I probably would not have bothered to find out.
You cannot be actually living in UK. Sure we have all that, but my issue is the COMPETANCY...
4 Million surveillance cameras (avg. person gets filmed 300 times a day)
All operated by a bunch of morons, who either sleep on the job, or are busy using them to film Traffic offences (bus lane offenses, etc) as its a lucrative money train.
Citizens have to agree to full biometric scan and filing in order to apply for a passport (quote by government: If you don't want to give us your prints that's fine, you don't NEED a passport, you can stay at home).
Current UK passports do NOT have fingerprint information.. They ONLY store the photo, and details (no facial stucture information either.... impossible considering I applied via the post, and just provided 2 photos). I should know, I have one of these, and noone has taken my fingerprint. My passport expires in 2017, which gives me enough time to plan to move out, if things become worse.
Engage in terrorism (call me what you want but that the 07/07/07 attacks on the London commuter busses overlapped with a terror training session on the exact same day, in the exact same place at the exact same time according to the government speaks of an inside job to me
a) it was 07/07/05 (this more than anything shows u are probably not a brit yourself, we all know that b) if was 3 TRAINS and one BUS c) conspiracy theory. The government conducts training sessions quite frequently.
Almost every Single Catholic I have met has embraced modern science, philosophy, Evolution, etc. They are pretty good at understanding that people change, things are discovered, but their belief in god doesnt.
Hinduism, one of the oldest religions in the world, embraces science and change. The living "philosophy" of love one another, and non-violence is still valid.
Your "Modern" (american) Chrisitan, is trying to bring back creationism, using such marketing terms such as "intelligent design"
the problem with your argument is.. majority of the other CHRISTIANS may know what J.T. and Fox news are not representative, but what about people of OTHER religions, who may not know the details to be able to differentiate between these "loud proclaimer of true Christianity" and other Christians?
I am only trying to play the devils advocate here, and I respect your view, but the grandparent was trying to say something which really made sense, but wasn't delivered right.
I am a Hindu, although I can tell that Hinduism has a huge number of subsets (indeed, Hinduism has a very much "open source" like pic and mix philosophy with regards to what YOU choose as a religion). Others just see me as a Hindu and cannot understand the difference. I cannot blame them either, becvause when i Think of Judism, Islam, Chrisianity, I think of singular religions, and not aware that each of them have differences, such as Islam and its Sunni/Sheite factions etc.
Therefore, if a person from another religion, which I do not know much about, says some controversial stuff, in the name of their religion, How am I, without knowledge of their religion, able to understand their views as different?
Ok, what you said is absolutely correct, but may be misunderstood by some, so let me clarify something.
The parent poster is NOT meaning that religion is somewhat "less" in Europe. What he is saying is in Europe, people are more "personal" about their religion, and not try to preach or let it rule others.
I am not sure how things work in USA, but here in Europe for at LEAST the past 8 or 10 years, the TVs would tune based on recognition of the various aspects of analogue TV signaling (such as v-sync, etc) as these have a fairy constant "heartbeat" to say the least. Once a channel is locked in, then the tuner uses the Teletext circuitry to fine tune it, as well as Identify the actual channel, so its kept in the right order (BBC1 = 1, BBC2 = 2, ITV = 3, etc).
Therefore the whitespace is not really needed for most TVs in use to auto tune.
Digital (DVB-T) uses a different tuning method which is more accurate.
What MAY happe is the loss of whitespace may slow down tuning in these sets, as the tuning mechanism cannot "fast skip" to the next strong signal.
Treacherous platform is "required" to run "Treacherous Apllications" that may or may not access "Treacherous media". None treacherous content/applications need to use the Teacherous parts of the platform:)
And somehow, I dont see MS yet preventing Firefox, etc on Vista.
Indeed, before they released Vista, they invited the Mozilla folks to test, Firefox on vista completely, as they consider Firefox as a "Tier 1" application that HAS to run.
This is not informative to the context of the discussion. Fault MS all you like, but one thing, its Windows Mobile OS does not have half the draconian measures Apple has on its iPhone OS. It is possible to make and run any application, even where they duplicate existing functionality.
As for compatiblity, even if Active Sync does NOT support third party plug-ins easily, you are free to develop your own sync platform, such as ones utilizing SynchML.
the iPhone doesnt even allow you to replace iTunes as the music Sync application. Most Windows Mobile phones on the other hand can either support USB mass storage (or a wrapper that simulates it) on the device, or at the very least allow you to put your Memory card into a reader, to copy your songs. The in-built Media Player, will automatically search for and add songs to the library on first run, and can be requested to search there after.
The Windows Media Player sync is optional (only required if you have some DRM songs).
Otherwise, nothing stopping you from adding some MP3s,MIDIs etc onto the device. And if you want to support other formats, there are many free and commercial media players (TCPMP is one such free one, Nero Mobile is a commercial one, which also provides support for DNLA).
So 4 out of about 4000 apps have been rejected so far. 0.4%. I don't think it's time to panic yet.
4000 apps, which the majority are thin wrappers around web pages, or the like vs some few (interesting) apps.
The apps that got "rejected" are exactly the ones I would have wanted (bar the i am rich one). I have WANTED an app that can download podcasts straight to my iPod Touch. Currently I use my Nokia N95 (which has a podcast application built in) do do that, but its screen is not as nice as the iPod.
The second thing is, Apple is charging money to "join" the program (even for freeware developers), yet are not 100% clear on their rejection policies (which allows them to revise their policies), and no scope for refund.
I am certain this will fall foul of some UK/European laws, due to its vague nature, and some false advertising by Apple, in terms of their rallying calls for developers (yes I heard them). Finally not being able to disclose the reasons for rejection can also fall short of some laws, as reasons for rejections can help other developers avoid mistakes, or better asses their own projects.
If Apple wants to keep secret its reasons for rejecting applications, then it could be equated that Apple are kind of performing a "lottery" of sorts. That also could fall short of some laws.
Even Symbian (which itself is stricter than J2ME/ Windows Mobile/Android) doesnt do these shenigans.
I got my data plan over a year ago in 2007 january, and even then there was the following options: Web'n'walk Basic: 1gb, no tether, £7.99 Web'n'walk Plus: 3gb, tether allowed (with vpn/ssl/etc), £11.99 Web'n'walk Max: 10gb, tether allowed + voip, £25
they don't drop down if you go over, but persistent "offenders" will be moved up a plan.
I think the prices have gone up slightly now for new customers, but they have thrown in HotSpot access too for them.
Almost every phone I have had from my T68i in 2001 allowed some way of downloading AND sharing (via BT/IR/SMS/EMAIL/MMS) of ringtones. Starting with iMelody formats, then MIDI, then MP3/AAC, then recorded formats, and some phones even allow video for ringtones.
My SonyEricsson K800i even has a built in video editor (VideoDJ) which allows you to cut, insert, title and mix ANY videos (even changing the soundtrack), then using as a Video Ringtone, or Sending via MMS/email/bluetooth. Its not even a Smartphone.
My Nokia N95 does not have it built in (I have the new 8gb version which removed the video editor), but software can be obtained.
So frankly the Apple way of doing it, is a little clumsy.
Why am i one of the few that does NOT find it unusual.
Windows (And windows mobile, Linux, etc) are Operating Systems designed to run applications. Thats their key function.
Windows may not be an "amazing system", but it allows applications to run. There may be some "safety roadblocks" to prevent issues, but most can be resolved.
Even the draconian Vista with its DRM infested media players, etc, there is nothing stopping you from replacing the media player with VLC, or anything.
For example, its DRM is only for these stupidly infected practices using by the content providers, etc. There is theoretically nothing stopping you from creating your own media format, and players, and not having to deal with the "secure DRM pathways", on Vista.
Same thing on Windows mobile. You CAN change the dialer, music player.. anything. Most HTC phones ship with an alternative dialer, close application functionality, and a different media player). You can install opera, webkit, and even portable MiniMo browsers.
on the iPhone, you cannot create an application that provides a better/different music player, dialer, mail, and many others.
Erm, and WHAT makes you implying that there will be no tethering or allowing apps to replace T-Mobile services? If i remember rightly, Android has the specific intention that "You could replace the phone dialer if you wish".
Secondly, T-Mobile got into all sorts of hot water here in the UK for disabling the SIP component on their customized N95 phones, (i am not sure what exactly they disabled, as I have a non customised version).
But my experience with T-Mobile (UK) is that they are not usually that bad in over 7 years of using data, and over 10 years of being with one2one(old name)/T-Mobile.
They have never prevented me from tethering, all the way from my T68i (via bluetooth/GPRS) to my Nokia N95 with a £12 a month WebnWalk Plus plan using HSDPA. I have been able to VPN, SSH, and many other things. I have also been able to use VOIP (accidentally) once through my plan (despite my particular plan not supposed to be allow VOIP) showing they dont "block" voip.
I am not sure what T-Mobile USA is like, but its pretty reasonable here.
Google is a trademark, and Google HAS to make reasonable efforts to defend trademarks, otherwise the trademark will become irrelevant. There is a law or something about that.
Nevertheless, in this particular case, it was pretty clear that the e-tailer was cashing in on Google's name, which is pretty dodgy anyway. I would NOT buy from such a e-tailer.
Actually, there is a counter argument to that too.
Here in the UK, we have the House of Commons (the elected lot, including the prime minister).
You also have the house of lords. Which many see as the "priviedged" peers, who are not alected, and totally "undemocratic". However, its only thanks to the House of Lords recently that some truly draconian laws have been kept in check (hence why Tony Blair really wanted to reduce their veto powers).
I guess there are rights and wrongs to any form of government. but all should be representing the people, which is were things go wrong, whoever is in charge.
Sorry I misread your post, as I thought via implication that you were not aware the phoen was made by HTC.
I agree fully. Actually i really like the Diamond as it is the first "Smartphone" that has small "non smartphone" like dimensions. its only detration is the lack of Keyboard. (Yes I am aware of the Diamond pro, but that is *much* thicker)

Doesnt that mean that Microphones would fail too, when analogue disappears?

until passports are gone and they're squarely in 1984.
I would be totally impressed, judging by the sheer incompetency of the UK government, if anything like 1984 happens.
Sure they may try, but frankly, its just not going to happen.
and who said android used j2me?
even the apps on android has been developed using the same api, and running on dalvik
a) Visual studio costs $299. there are free tools available too.
b)symbian may be less popular in USA, but elsewhere in the world, Symbian is by far the most popular.
have a look on this site, it has some podcast applications, but I am not sure of their quality:

There are all installer and cydia stuff.
there is also mxtube, which allows download of youtube videos.
