  1. Re:How about SD? on Apple Orders 12 Million iPhones · · Score: 1

the 100 song limit is for the iTunes version of the phone, and only if you use iTunes to transfer the songs. If you use the phone as a bog standard USB Mass Storage Device (or shove the SD card into a reader) you can store as many MP3s on the card as space permits.

I have the Moto V3i, with a 1Gb MicroSD , and already have 150+ songs stored on it.

  2. Re:How about SD? on Apple Orders 12 Million iPhones · · Score: 1

I have a Moto V3i (aka RAZR2), and I fitted a 1gb Micro SD and shoved a whole load of MP3's. pretty good, and I can take the MicroSD out, and put it in a SD adapter, and plug it into my iPAQ.

  3. Re:It's all about the interface on Apple Orders 12 Million iPhones · · Score: 1

Actually, internally the RAZR still stores it as a separate name/number entry, but effectively groups them. This leads to the interesting situation of being able to have a separate "address" for each phone number. But, unlike the other phones, you can have multiple home (or mobile, etc) numbers associated with a name. I use Outlook to synch my phonebook, and it pretty much deals with those issues, by ensuring the right numbers, and addresses are synced.

  4. Re:It's all about the interface on Apple Orders 12 Million iPhones · · Score: 1

    Contacts
    Phonebook menu
    Setup
View, change from "all contacts", to "Primary Contacts"

that allows a single name to have many numbers. But, I warn you, the way this is done is a bit of a kludge. it is still stored as single name-single number, but internally, identical names are grouped together.

It does have some advantages, and some drawbacks to the way SonyEricsson does it. but it largely works, and it is supported by the outlook sync.

    I agree.

My MP3 player is actually my Motorola RAZR V3i Mobile phone. I got it on contract for £0, to which I added a pair headphones (£12) plus a 1g Micro SD card (£28), for a total of £40. Its a certainly capable phone, with class 1 bluetooth which pairs well with my car bluetooth handsfree, and email capabilities. Its small enough, and has Drag and Drop MP3 playback - It has a standard Mini USB port, and can be set to appear as a USB mass storage device with no need for drivers, under Windows Linux, and MAC. It charges up when connected to USB. Its MP3 playback is of very good quality, though a little quieter than some players. Only drawback is it doesn't handle VBR files, though there is a firmware update in the works to fix that. As far as i know, there is NO capabilities to play DRM files.

Although there is an iTunes version of the phone, I didn't bother getting that, as Apple put a limitation of either 50 or 100 songs only can be transfered via the iTunes interface. The iTunes version still supports normal MP3 via drag and drop, with no limitations.

When I am also carrying my iPaq, I just take the transflash card out, and slot it into my iPaq via an SD adapter, and I get the same tunes on my iPaq (and I can place VBR files in a separate directory, which the iPaq CAN handle)

I believe the SonyEricsson Walkman line of phones also support Drag And Drop MP3 (my old S700 certainly did). They have DRM available, but its not mandatory.

Considering the heavy promotion of mobile phones here in the UK with MP3 capabilities, I wonder sometimes, if iPod/iTunes may be defeated this way (the SonyEricsson line, and the V3i was very popular, as well as Symbian Nokia, and Ericsson phones)

  10. Re:Finally... on Motorola Develops Bare-Bones Phone · · Score: 1

I think the minimum features would depend on the person using it. But in western countries (especially Europe) the issue isn't that the phone is available or not. Its more a matter of the way the subsidy system works here.

For example, I would LOVE to have a simple SMALL phone, with good call, and reception capabilities, WITH Bluetooth as a minimum. Therefore when I am out and about, partying or whatever, I carry a simple phone that JUST WORKS. It will connect to my car Bluetooth Handsfree for safe driving.

If I need "extra features" like WAP, email, MP3, or stuff, I can use a PDA. so when I am working I can carry a separate purpose built PDA, or even a Laptop. But when I am going out for a dinner, or socialising, or actually living my life, just a simple phone that dials, sends and receive TEXT messages.

However, I can also understand there are some valid reasons for having a Camera as a minimum. I know many female friends who take a photo of a Minicab before they step inside, and send a message to a friend, with the photo attached, for safety reasons.

Mobile warriors require the latest and greatest PDA come phones.

But when we go to get a new phone and contract, we find that the high subsidies offered, means many handsets are free, from simple handsets, to MP3, Video Camera included Monster. Since there is no financial incentive to choose the simpler model, users getting a contract tends to go for the best "free" phone. I ended up recently getting a Motorola V3i, with a camera, I do not use, and an MP3 player I do not use.

Sure in the Pre Pay arena there is a little more sense, but for many people Pre Pay is simply not enough.

Maybe if Mobile companies would reduce their tarrifs, and also reduce their subsidies, people would more likely buy a phone more suitable for their needs. And benefit from reduced subscription, and call costs. But that will not happen.

Windows is interesting, because you are PAYING extra for a "commodity" OS (not luxury, or specialist), and getting less than what cheaper (or free) models give you.

The idea was to build a laptop that had reasonable power, yet cheap enough for bulk business purchases. The project was done by the four companies working together on a reference platform.

The result: An AMD Mobile Athlon XP 2000+ with the ATI Radeon Mobility chipset, coupled with 256MB RAM, a decent keyboard, and sound system, in a very smart package consistig of Windows XP pro, and the bare minimum of applications (no bloat), all sellign for the price of £600 inc tax and delivery in April 2003, which is actually a VERY good deal at the time.

I added a further 256MB of ram to this. And have used it as a development machine, server, Linux dual boot, and general usage.

This laptop is STILL in use 3 and a half years later, runs Ubunto flawlessly, and as for the Windows side, i STILL have not reformatted/reinstalled it. Recently I Swapped the Hard Disk, but rather than reinstalling windows, i simply used Ghost to clone it. The only issues with that laptop is one of the fans are slightly noisy (easily replaceable), and the LiIon battery doesnt last as long as it used to. But it still has a VERY usable performance (more than enough for me), and for its price, has very good value.

This merger will hopefully bring more of these to the market.
