But being a Swedish/Japanese company, headquartered in the UK, it doesnt follow the same rules, and they refined their product line, and looked at the long term goal, and recently have been in the black quarter upon quarter, especially with the SE T610 phone which was by far a hot seller for a single product.

    VERY bad analogy.

to use the LATEST IE with all the security for "free", you have to have purchased Windows XP. Having any other Windows or other OS is either not possible, or even if it is possible (IE on Linux via Wine), its not permitted.

Therefore usage of IE ties you to the License of a particular product. Indeed, installing the latest IE may even CHANGE the EULA of exisitng product.

Linux, does not require you to have a particular product. If Linux was free, but only permitted on IBM PS/2's then you have a point. But Linux does not provide any restrictions on how you USE the product, nor is there usage constraints based on the License of another product.

You can download the Windows version of Firefox, and possibly run it on Linux using Wine, as the license does not have restrictions regarding that.

So, in essence IE is NOT free.

I have used blue Cold cathodes in a similar fashion shining up onto the ceiling, together with carefull use of blacklight and ultra violet reflecting paint in certain areas can give an intresting look, and can certainly increase "the mood" when its, ahem, "needed".

And I am intrested to knwo if there is any "matchbox" computers, with no hard disk, and low power processor.. which use little power, but can display a slide show, or some sort, so my display can become a "virtual painting" when not being used as a computer. Is it possible to build one?

  9. IE is tied to the SHELL, and not to the OS on Microsoft Says Firefox Not a Threat to IE · · Score: 4, Interesting

IE is not JUST iexplorer.exe. That is only a small stub file that loads certain COM components associated with Web browsing.

Same with EXPLORER.EXE, it is only a stub that loads the COM controls that deal with file browsing.

There are other COM modules available, such as Network browsers, Picture viewers, and in Win95, there was the easter egg COM module.

the stubs can load any of these COM modules dependent on the content being displayed. Indeed it IS possible to make a HTML COM component based on Mozilla, and the COM/ActiveX component IS available. however, it is stil not possible for the Mozilla COM module to replace IE and its trident engine in this context either.

The point I am making, is that IE is NOT tied to the OS itself, its only tied to the SHELL of the OS.

If you REALLY want to stop IE from starting, even on a Windows XP box, use Program Manager as the shell! It does work.... its progman.exe located in c:\windows\system32

I use progman.exe and Mozilla as the shell on my "guest" account of my XP box, and it works VERY nicely! ;)

Wrong, Apple is ONLY making 4c per song on iTunes. It has been argued that iTunes was a loss leader to promote the iPod. if they open iTunes to other players, it may NOT be worth their intrests.

Secondly, this is NOT the original "iPod Mini" competitor. Create DID release the Muvo2 player earlier (my dad has one) its similar in size to the iPod mini, with a 4gb hard disk, and longer life REMOVABLE LiIon battery.

The product was MUCH better than the iPod Mini in sound quality and convenience.

It appeared as a removable HD (so YES it did work with Linux, provided your kernel supports standard USB disks)

Later revisions of the Muvo2 did incorporate a FM radio.

the main disadvatages of the Muvo2 is the plasticky look, and the small screen.

the Mini ZEN is similar to the Muvo2, but incorporates the style of the full size Zen player. I am not sure if the Mini Zen is going to follow the Muvo route of using a "USB Mass storage" interface, or follow the Zen/Jukebox, and have a more proprietry USB interface. However, since there is already software supporting the Zen/Jukebox for linux, i shoudl say that Linux support shoudl be good, but i do hope they use the Mass Storage interface.

I think security really does in effect boil down to the user / sysadmin. A good knowledgable user/sysadmin is far less likely to be compromised that a person who doesnt hold the qualifications. It doesnt matter whether the underlying system is Linux or Windows.

I THINK the Granparent poster is tryign to say that out of the most, a RECENT copy of Apache installed in its default settings MAY be more secure than a RECENT copy of IIS, also installed with the default settings.

However, default settings ARE insecure, and ANY sysadmin worth his/her salt, would need to apply patches, and tailor the settings to suit the security model.

I myself have used both Linux and Windows for many years. I have not had a compromise on EITHER OS, ever. I have NEVER had a virus, despite not running anti-virus software. Never had any privacy attacks (spyware, malware etc), and have chosen sensible. Althgouh my firneds get attacked every day on their windows boxen, NEITHER my Linux or WIndows boxes have gotten attacked, nor have I had ANY issues whatsoever, in regards to stability (Never had a blue screen of death or Kernal panic in over a year)

The point I am trying to make, before being flamed to peices is, a computer is only as secure as the admin. and to properly compare the security models of Linux and Windows, you would need two similarly configured boxes, with DECENT admins on both.
