Recently (June), I flew from London to Sri Lanaka. A Person nearby forgot to turn off his GSM cellphone, and it was recieving text messages throughout the flight as it passed over various countries. At that point i decided to give my cellphone a try, I switched it on, and sent a text to my parents saying I was arriving early, and asked if they could send the taxi 1 hour earlier to Colombo Airport. Cost = 20p (compared to $5 per min using the seat phone) and no wait at Colombo airport.

    It can be handy.

Yes, this is definately true. Maybe more so in Europe than in the USA.

I am a geek, admit it, but didnt have any issues with girls. I have dated many girls, some of which earned envy from my "normal" (ie.. non geeky) mates.

Geeks these days are from affluent families, drive nice cars, and often have better personalities, than normal people, and even take better pride in their appearance. Girls these days like that type of person.

I am a pure geek, driving a Merc, live in a nice house, married a sexy gal, who drives an SLK. As a couple we get stares from others.

This can work the other way round too.. certainly with new Benz drivers are carefull and drive their baby well, but those who have older Benz (especially the older C-Class) they KNOW their car is built like a tank, and have a "dont give a damn" attitude to driving, making them *worse* drivers.

This apathy usually occurs shortly after you get involved in a minor spat, like for example, when someone once hit me in the back of my car, i saw how his cheap Ford Fiesta crumpled like a paper cup, whilst my car had only two scratches. After that I knew my car was a hell of a lot stronger, and i became more apathetic.

I think this COULD apply to Firefox too.. if someone NEARLY has a problem, but firefox protects them, I am concerned that they too could become apathetic about firefox.

A BIG notice on all phones here in the UK say "Use of non original Batteries can cause damage or fire".

Yet most people turn around and say the words "lock in" and buy cheap of the back of the lorry specials, and wonder why they have problems.

Mobile phone batteries are not simple. The cells can release flamable gas if not used properly, and if overcharged can cause leakage, or damage.

It is unreasonable to accuse the Phone Manufacturers for faulty third party products, when they clearly warn against their usage.

Some manufacturers like Ericsson go one step futher.

Ericsson incorporate a special curicuitry that if the battery is not original or licensed, it would use a much lower power to charge the battery, to avoid overheating due to sub par components.

and for those who argue about Lock In, I have a T68 phone which still uses its original battery. My frined who poo pooed the disclaimer bought third party batteries and is has had to replace the batteries 3 times.

Secondly, All ericsson batteries have a temperature sensor built in. The phoen can monitor the temperature of the battery and cut power shoudl anything dodgy be happening. Anyone who has a Ericsson phone (T68/T610/T630 except the Pxxx series) can test this by getting the Float Mobile Agent software and linking to the phone, where you will be able to read the temperature of the battery as well as the phone.

Point being, manufacturers have done all they can to limit the issues with this, and cellphones are still relatively safe.
