  1. Granted... on Virtual World Currency Exchange Launches · · Score: 1

...I haven't bothered with online games in a few years now, so I have no idea how well their creators enforce their respective EULAs these days.

But isn't something like this just waiting for Verant/Mythic/whoever to release the hounds? After all, this is different from a year-old account changing hands. This allows new characters to have a shortcut to mass amounts of funds by way of a non-company program (the MMOG at the starting end of the conversion) and third-party intervention (the website and its "in-game representatives"). Which is, uh, cheating.

That would be the Kobayashi Maru training scenario.

  3. This is bizarre... on Gaming Soundbites You Can't Forget · · Score: 1

...and I doubt many will be on the same page with me, but most of the music from Quest For Glory IV: Shadows of Darkness remains etched in my memory.

Particularly the Mordavia town theme, the theme in Dr. Cranium's lab, and the Hotel Mordavia theme, which is actually a classical piece. The name of which escapes me at the moment.

...rent one Jackie Chan movie where he's using Drunken Master style kung fu, and one Jackie Chan movie where he's play a Hong Kong cop, and play them at the same time. Voila.

  5. Beat me to it on Knights Over Europe Shows Off Dawn Of Flight Combat · · Score: 1

I spent many, many nights of my youth playing Red Baron.

One of my friends at the time was all about Falcon 3.0, but I always preferred Red Baron and Aces of the Pacific. Taking out the fancy modern cockpit made the dogfighting seem much more exciting.

  6. Fence Sitting on GameCube Outsells PlayStation 2 In Japan · · Score: 3, Insightful

Nobody would ever purchase a console with the intent of playing only one game, with the possible exception of old bargain bin consoles like the N64 or the Dreamcast. Following the logic to that end is pretty ridiculous. But for those who were kind of interested in a console's lineup of games, but not yet willing to buy it, the killer app is the catalyst. I'd think that if a game came out that a gamer had to have and was willing to buy the hardware for it, s/he would rationalize it by saying to themself, "well, I can also get game X and game Y for it, too, eventually." That's precisely what happened when I bought my GameCube, and my PS2, as well. That's most likely what nearly every non-hardcore gamer does.

  7. Dethroned? on GameCube Outsells PlayStation 2 In Japan · · Score: 3, Insightful

I don't think the numbers suggest that Sony is being dethroned, in Japan or anywhere else.

What I think it does suggest is that the American gamers who seem bent on proclaiming the death of the GameCube seem to think that America is the only place where games are played.

Sure, the N-Gage might outsell the GBA in their first week of release, but this isn't the GameCube's first week of release. It's rising sales are being pushed by a game with high fan interest, just like they thought was going to happen back when Wind Waker was released. Contrary to the belief of the anti-Nintendo crowd, that's a perfectly valid way of demonstrating continuing fan support for a console. Especially a year or two into its release, when hardware specs and whether it looks "modern" or not doesn't matter anymore.

In fact, though it may not be the reality of the industry, I'd venture to say that a console that sells for the sake of a game that a gamer *really* wants to play has more value than a console that is bought for the sake of owning the console. That's just my opinion, though.

  8. d'oh. on Sony Settles Case With Lik Sang Over Mod Chips · · Score: 1

I somehow read "standing" as "pending." Bad monkey. Sigh.

  9. Precedented! on Sony Settles Case With Lik Sang Over Mod Chips · · Score: 1

If that suit settled with the "no more mod chips" caveat, the other two probably will as well. At least, the Nintendo one probably will. Microsoft doesn't seem to have a very good track record as far as "not getting one's ass beat down in court," so I wouldn't be too shocked if they somehow neglected to get their way even with the precedent.

  10. Re:In Mythic's defense... on Dark Age of Camelot European Server Compromised · · Score: 1

My guess is that a developer of an MMOG isn't too concerned about a speed hack. After all, considering how games like EQ and DAoC operate (even in regards to PvP), the very worst it's going to do is unbalance the classes a little. MMOG's usually need to be designed for stat numbers rather than twitch.

  11. Hmm. on What Type Of Gamer Are You? · · Score: 1

Um... well, after hearing a second or two of music from just about any Japanese adventure/RPG, I can usually rattle off the composer and the game it came from.

Other than that, the only trait my gaming friends and I share is the propensity for calling each other by profane and sometimes blasphemous epithets. What category are we?

  12. It's about time. on New Xbox, PS2 Budget Titles Announced · · Score: 1

I've been dying to buy Kingdom Hearts since borrowing a friend's when it was new, but it has been particularly stubborn in the price-drop department. I hope the Greatest Hits version still has the neat shiny cover. I'm kind of like a crow in that respect.
