    And, by the way, this is what would happen. Tools would be developed by smart people to allow users to easily schedule retrieval of content at opportune times. It would have a smoothing effect on the peaks.

    It's amazing what market forces can do when we actually use prices to reflect, you know, the cost of things.

    Both bandwidth and water are finite only within a particular time period.

    Um, couple things.

    If the market rate for loaning the money is 18% and the government offers it to you for 5%, that is a subsidy. If that saves you $1m over the life of the loan, that is EXACTLY the same as the government giving you $1m as a gift in small increments over the life of the loan.

    Secondly, you do NOT have to pay back loans under a number of circumstances. If Tesla's business model ends up being bunk, the government will not get its money back. Otherwise, there would be no risk and the interest on the loan would only match the opportunity cost and have no risk component.

    Here's the rub: there would be no need for this whatsoever if the government got out of subsidizing Tesla's competitors. If Tesla couldn't make it work in a competitive market, then that's that.

    You may be right about the bias, but that does NOT imply that the opinions are not representative.

    I think this is likely. Read books on modern belief in religion. Things that you and I would laugh at and thought were things of the past (as in, the 1700s) are still alive and well in the rural US.

    Interesting point. But have you considered that long-staying languages discourage hardware changes, too? How many companies or governments do you know that are shelling out millions to ditch their mainframe system in favor of server clusters, and needing to rewrite all their software in the process? There's something to be said about software that turns over at the same rate as hardware evolves.

    There's a few ex-KGB people who insist that this is the result of years of infiltration by the Soviets into our education and political systems. I'm not sure whether I buy it, but it's hard to ignore that the result would be the same.

    Great call. If there's anything I know, it's that the federal government is the bastion of education theory and implementation, so we should definitely make sure they are calling the shots. If there's one more thing I know, it's that if you want high quality and innovation in an area, make sure to establish a government monopoly.

    Who cares if gitmo is being shut down? The POINT of that suggestion is to stop detaining people without due process. Shutting down gitmo and moving them to another facility is a meaningless activity if not paired with a plan to only detain people who are guilty!

    And "Stay the Course" McCain? You mean like staying in Iraq for years, continuing bailouts, acting above the law, etc? Glad we didn't get any of that!

    Decency? We train the boy who grew up next door to you to mechanically react to situations and kill as many "hostiles" (not humans) as possible. You kill them or they kill you. Why are you over there risking your life? Because of Saddam. Why did your buddy blow up into 20 pieces yesterday? Because of Saddam. Whether it's true or not, this is what we drill into these guys. And you're telling me that you are shocked that once we capture Saddam we did things like mock him by making him watch the South Park movie?

    Decency? It's fucking war, dude. It's blowing your neighbor up, shooting the former English teacher between the eyes, dehumanizing the enemy (because how else do you deal with killing so many and still be somewhat normal?).

    Decency? I'd imagine you've got to be kidding me. The way to be decent would have been to stay out of Iraq in the first place. If we can't do that, I don't know how you can expect any level of decency.
