"The wolf shall dwell with the lamb, and the the leopard shall lie down with the kid; and the calf and the young lion and the fatling together; and a little child shall lead them." Isaiah 11:6-7
Certain stimuli in the brain, such as the smell of freshly based cookies, lead to higher levels of dopamine that remain after the stimulus is removed
Um, yes. It's called hunger. Hunger is a feeling brought on by external stimuli (smell, sight, etc.) or internal stimuli (the thought of food, etc.). This does not necessarily generalize into whether or not someone will buy the newest Barbie upon sight.
People make fun of MCSD? I don't know where you work, but I work at one of the 'Big Six' consulting firms, and this is about as untrue as it comes. We do.NET and J2EE development in our custom development practice. Surprisingly, no one cares about J2EE certifications. MCSD is big, though.
In our architecture and infrastructure practice, certifications are huge (and probably required, although don't quote me on that). So if you are going into networking, make sure you do the typical certs (A+, etc.) That is not my area, so I can't help you with specifics.
If you are a data person, no one cares about certifications. If you are a process/system designer, no one cares about certifications. If you are an enterprise applications person (SAP, Oracle/Peoplesoft, etc.), certifications are useful.
So, in summary, on the enterprise level MCSD and all EA and A/I certs are relevant. All others are a waste of money. YMMV on other levels.
Inflating gas prices doesn't make any sense. Gas usage is not a problem; it is a necessity. The problem is excessive or irresponsible gas usage.
If you are going to inflate the cost of something, it should be a tax on gas-irresponsible vehicles that gets earmarked to doing something productive with the matter, like funding alternative feul research or something.
It's usually pretty clear: tax something equal to its harm to society. The only hard part is putting a dollar amount on the harm to society, but that's why the government pays $20k+ for studies.
We've got "guilty pleasure" and "Internet" in the summary, and the examples end up being about music artists he's embarrassed to admit to listening to?
In short one can use Google trends to figure out what's hot and what's not amongst those Internet users that search on Google and perhaps even find cyclic patterns to pick best time to advertise on Google.
Maybe that sounds picky, but you have to consider the sample before you start making conclusions and generalizations.
Obviously they are talking about a player who knows what he/she is doing. It is impossible to learn the habits of someone who is playing randomly, so it's not an interesting problem to attack.
I would use it. I currently have to keep a Windows partition around solely to deal with Word documents. OpenOffice doesn't cut it for anything beyond simple formatted text. For example, I do a lot of writing, and for publishers whose editors use Word's "track changes", I'm stuck with booting into Windows and opening the file in Word.
This is horrible advice. The solution to the credit card problem is not to get rid of them; the solution is to learn some discipline. Credit cards websites where you can track your bill by the day and even receive email alerts based on balance and posted purchase amount mean you really have no excuse to be shocked by a credit card bill.
You want to buy a widget for $10. You can (a) use cash and pay $10 immediately, (b) use a credit card and pay $9.90 in a month and a half from now, after you have gained an additional 45 days of interest, and after you receive a bill that automatically breaks your purchases out into categories like Groceries, Gas&Automotive, Travel, Government Services, etc.
The temptation to just give up on credit cards baffles me, and I see it all the time. If you can learn discipline enough to become a customer that the credit card companies hate, then you will be much better off.
Go read the Millionaire next door. Millionaires don't borrow money. The middle class borrows money.
This might be true, but I think you are preaching a dengerous message. Debt is not evil. Many people have a very hard time with credit cards and car loans and whatever else because they live beyond their means -- these people should avoid debt. However, for the rest of us, debt is great. I would love to borrow money at 4.5% and stick it into a CD at 5.25% (obviously this is a somewhat contrived example, but using CDs with guaranteed return is really the only way to make my point clear -- but the point holds for expected value calculations). If people listened to you, we'd have no millionaires because no one would ever invest in (new) businesses. The point is not to avoid debt; the point is to avoid debt where the cost (interest) is greater than the expected benefit. If you can manage debt in this manner, you will make money in the long run.
Talk about non-sequitur. If you think that Flash is a valid alternative to W3C recommendations, I don't think you really understand what W3C's purpose is. It's much broader than the narrow efforts of Flash, which is only available to personal compuber based browsers with a plugin.
carrying around a little transmitter saying 'I'm an American! I'm an American!' isn't a fun and safe thing to do in all parts of the world.
I might get modded funny, but I'm being serious. I've traveled to various parts of the world, and believe me we don't need an extra transmitter. I haven't been able to pinpoint what it is, but the locals always know I and anyone with me are Americans.
I may have just opened myself up to a lot of jokes...
Another slashdot factinista. The rest of us go straight from the gut. Do you know you have more nerve endings in your gut than you have in your head? You can look it up.
I think they're doing it more for marketing payback.

Don't worry. It will take at least 3 seconds for them to fade in.
It would be useful, but I wouldn't pay for it. If your company is not willing to pay for it, then they don't value it anyway.

Sales taxes on necessities harm the poor. That's why I am not suggesting a flat tax on all usage, just excessive or irresponsible usage.

Then what do you think about the news reporting people being charged for things, prior to them having been convicted or found not guilty?
Why is my information their property? I gave them that information for the purpose of obtaining financial aid.
custom build where necessary , and buy if it's not related to something that will give Google a competitive advantage
Hi. Welcome to everyone's IT strategy. So Google uses OSS too. What's the news?

While reading this story, all I could think about were the talking heads on Fox News...

I have 739 facebook friends, so I don't know what the hell these guys are talking about.
Oh yeah? And I'm betting on red.
WHO CARES?!
I'm pretty sure I'm about as well-known as this Jeff dude...
What's the matter, Slashdot? No stories submitted today about spy products you can actually buy ?
