Yes, but that "13 year old software collector" who steals a copy of Photoshop learns the software. He then goes to college, and he's ahead of the curve in his new media major because he's been using photoshop for 5 years already. Then he graduates, gets a job, and guess what? The company that hires him also buys him a copy of this now defacto standard product.

DocLink, a document management solution that I developed helps to solve this problem. All revisions to a document are stored in a secure vault and all activity (changes, views, assignments, etc) is audited. Rather than storing files on a network share, our customers store them in a DocLink vault. Suddenly they are compliant with the auditors.

Granted, there are a lot of process improvements that need to take place, but having the proper tools in place is the first step in the right direction.

You're exactly right. That's where document management comes in. Our software puts the file's URL in the email rather than attaching it to the email. One central location which stores the "master" of the file and all of it's revisions - all accessible via any browser.

Now if we could just convince everyone that it's better than attaching files to emails and throwing everything else on a network share, we'd have it made :-)

  16. If you can't beat 'em, join 'em. on Why Email Is Still The Most Adopted Collaboration Tool · · Score: 3, Interesting

I develop "collaboration software". Actually it's document management software with collaboration tools built in.

My plan for making the software easier to implement was to make it work with email, not separate from it. Keep It Simple Stupid. Most user already check their email multiple times per day, so why create another "inbox" for them to check? It's more work, more effort and therefore simply it simply won't get done (not to mention all of the belly aching and complaining that would come with it).

It's much easier for a user to get an email that says "Joe Blow wants you to "take out the garbage". Do you wish to [accept] or [reject] this task? If you do not respond within the next [# hours / days] we will assume you reject the task. This task must be completed by [Sunday @ 5pm].

    Intel Macs come out.

Hackers get OSX86 up and running on Dells with relative ease, despite Apple's best efforts to prevent them from doing so. However, they have such a hard time getting Windows to run on a Mac that a contest is started and 13,000 dollars worth of prize money is offered.

  24. Re:A Different Test on U of Wisconsin's Mac OS X Security Challenge · · Score: 4, Insightful

The problem is that the media presents the original test as though Mac OSX is insecure out of the box. It's very misleading.

An acquaintance of mine runs a small web hosting company. His original service plan offered SSH accounts to every hosting account. Despite his best efforts to secure the box, it was still rooted by a script kiddie.

His customer's PC was compromised and the ssh password for his account on the linux server was found by the script kiddie. The shell account had access to GCC. The script kiddie logged in as the non privileged user and used gcc to compile a rootkit. The rest was a walk in the park.

The OS was Slackware linux. All of the accounts were jailed, and all of the "best practice" measures were taken to harden the box (I can't comment on every detail as I am not a linux system admin).

My point is that when a malicious user gains shell access to any *nix system, you're in deep trouble.

My friend has since stopped offering SSH access to his customers.
