27 Playable Wii Games At E3

The Nintendo conference seemed to be the perfect opposite of Sony's conference yesterday. It was polished, the presenters were poised, and the demos conveyed exactly the message they were aiming for. Notable info includes 27 playable Wii titles on the E3 floor, a speaker in the Wii controller, a StarFox title for the DS, and a confirmation of motion sensor in the nunchuck attachment. There will be two versions of Twilight Princess (one for Wii, one for GC) and they'll both be out on Wii launch day. Launch is slated for Q4 of this year. The presenters kept the launch price and date under wraps as the tone of the event was inspiration, not information. The number of playable games available this week confirms their commitment to a launch date this year, and the hilarious tennis game played onstage by the Nintendo honchos and the contest winner made their 'playing = believing' slogan really hit home. More flash than substance, but a solid presentation overall

No, really not. I'm not sure if you have ever used one of the motion sensitive gamepads that were released throughout gaming history but they all sucked. The gamepad simply isn't a shape that works well for this kind of stuff. All the motion sensor in a gamepad can be is a replacement for an analog stick (which may have made sense before analog sticks have been invented but not today) whereas the Wii remote can represent any object your character is holding in the game. But the depressing thought is that, even though we now know beyond any shadow of a doubt that the Nintendo Wii is the superior system, I still expect Sony to dominate this holiday season.

Part of it is that, like it or not, Nintendo is treated like a kid's toy. Sony is treated like it's a "professional" system, which is doubly stupid when talking about games, but there you have it. The other part is that there are so many sequels coming out for the PS3, and while gamers will complain about sequels to no end, they'll still buy them. It may be the PS3, but all the games are at least at "4" for the PS3. You've got Metal Gear Solid 4, Devil May Cry 4, Final Fantasy 13 (13?! don't people ever try new things?), all coming out for the PS3. And despite the fact that they're all rehashed sequels, people will undoubtably buy the PS3 for them, and ignore the Wii as a "kid's toy".

For me each console offers something all of it's own. Excluding the up and coming consoles the Gamecube gives me Nintendo's unique style, they offer games that have no equivalents on any other console, stuff like Zelda, Mario, Smash Bros, even other stuff like Metroid or Geist you really can't find elsewhere. Also for my money they offer the best party game experience, lots of games that require little to no experience to just pickup and have good fun with friends through local multiplayer.

The PS2 offers me a lot of Eastern style games I can't really get elsewhere. Stuff like the FF franchise, Xenosaga, Tekken, MGS, Parappa, Guitar Hero etc. Those games have a distinctive Japanese feeling to them, something we've never had on an MS console and something that is too adult and mainstream for a Nintendo console. Most of these games however are best played alone.

The Xbox (and the 360) offer me a lot of Western style franchises and PC games that don't appear on any other console. A Plethora of FPS games, western style RPGs like Fable and Oblivion, and a yet to be matched online community/multiplayer experience. I may have to disagree with you on the "immersion" argument as my experiences with Forza and PGR3 felt a lot more true to life then my experiences with GT4 and Enthusia, but to each his own.

I don't know how you'd really analogize that to cars or politics but clearly each console (at least up to this point) offers their own distinct experiences. And it's clear that each company is trying to steal away ideas from the other. MS is trying to gain some of Sony's eastern style, Nintendo is trying to steal away some of MS's online community experience, and Sony is trying to steal away some of Nintendo's unique flair. There is more cross pollination going on then that but you get the idea.

Despite what the features are, or who stole what idea, the bottom line (for me at least) is who can deliver the games I enjoy playing, and can they do it at a reasonable price?

The 360 has done this for me so far, the $400 price tag was hard to swallow at first but PGR3, Condemned, COD2, DOA4, and Oblivion have more than paid for the console in enjoyment. The Wii has yet to proove itself as we don't know a price (though I highly doubt it will be anywhere near as expensive as the 360) and the PS3 will have to produce some out of this world experiences to warrant the $600 price tag they're expecting people to pay for their Premium console. I have been waiting for this conference for a very long time, and I am very satisfied from what I saw. This is because I expected only a few games and a reduced set of new ideas, but the (very short) demo of the WarioWare franchise showed that people at Nintendo have been thinking and creating innovative ways to interact with the games.

Even though I was not expecting "Metal Gear Solid 4 trailer" quality graphics, I can't deny I'm slightly dissapointed with the gameplay graphics, they seemed a little too cartoonish (specially the Wii Sports and WarioWare). Anyway, it is just a matter of time for developers to start using all the Wii's graphic capabilities (think Mario Sunshine vs. Resident Evil 4, both for Gamecube).

So maybe, Nintendo's efforts were focused on inspiring and showing what can be done with the new wii user interface (wui? wuii?) so third parties can create beautiful (now that I think again, the Final Fantasy video was amazing...) and fun games.

Zelda, Metroid, Mario, Final Fantasy, Tony Hawk, Madden... a very impressive line up if you ask me...

I'm definitely getting one of these as soon as I can. And I don't care about the childish name, at all. Hell... even if it were pink and called "Barbie's dreamy console" I would buy one.

I don't know about most of you guys, but I grew up listening to "that's too loud, turn it down!" from my mother while I was playing video games, and after moving out I have to put up with basically the same thing from the neighbors at my apartment. So where does the idea of a remote speaker leave people like me? I would like to get the full experience of the game, but I may not be able to hear the remote's speaker over my headphones. And if I could, would it be loud enough to disturb my roommate/neighbors? Could there be in-game options to route all sound through the TV speakers or the headphones, like there is with XB Live?

Actually, it had to do with the fact that it looks much more appropriate for a person to be playing Metroid Prime/Other Shooting Game in the dark than to be playing it in a bright happy setting.

It also will be home to new games conceived by indie developers whose creativity is larger than their budgets.

Or it would have been, if we all had 90' TV screens and a huge stage to move around in, or if after they were done demonstrating the Tennis game and had already turned around and stopped moving, MARIO HADNT KEPT PLAYING.

Yes, I realize he was no longer hitting the ball; but, he still tracked the ball and moved over to it, which basically means all that moving around by the person playing was Bullshit to look flashy, and the controller itself is nothing but a fancy pushbutton.

Does that mean it's completely without merit? I don't think so. But not quite so much merit as they'd have you believe. That is: It's got bullshit just like every other game demo at E3 has bullshit.

I still can't help but think of all those cheap crappy motion-capture video games they sell in the mall, which are just oh-so-successful and oh-so-not-the-worst-gaming-experience-ever.

Maybe I could, but I dont want to.

Meanwhile, Sony says "Motion and Tilt sensitivity? Yeah, we can /add/ that, and we don't need to throw out the controller itself to add a feature."

The real problem with that of course is that people have always been tilting their controllers when they're "into it".. I'm pretty sure that making that really mean something might be a problem when you dont really mean it, and might leave everyone struggling to stay perfectly still in an un-fun way. With no rumble pack.
