  3. BBS Voting booths on Busting Microsoft's Patent On Web-Polls? · · Score: 1

Back before the Internet (well, not really _before_) there were BBS systems that you would call directly. They ran software like PC Board, Wildcat, Spitfire, etc that supported "doors." Many had voting booths, questionairs, polls, whatever you want to call them. This all happened in the late 80's to the mid 90's. I'm sure you can find prior art in the BBS Archives. The Voting booths section would be a good start.

The police aren't going to want to give up their speed ticket income, nor are do drivers want control taken out of their hands. Most speeders do so intentionally, so why not just make them pay the consequences. With the GPS system you can determine how much over the speed limit they are and for how long. Charge the driver a fixed price per minute per mile an hour over the speed limit they are driving. So if I want to go fast I can pay the extra buck to do that without worrying about getting slammed with a $100 speeding ticket.

I would definately recommend the Marble FX. I've been using on for over two years now and I love it. I haven't gotten all four buttons working in Linux, but I'm a keyboard user more than a mouse user. Logitech gives you a great warranty, three years I think. When I started having trouble with the left button that prevented me from dragging anything around, their tech support shipped out a new unit and said I could just trash my broken one. Second, you're working for a company. You should be able to expense some good books on Linux. It's not like you're still in college and the campus book store is your old choice. Read some book reviews and have the company buy them.

Create a .sucks domain that only allows critical reviews of companies, products, and organizations and protect it with a free speech and free press arguments. Good online hypertext manuals are great when you're browsing around or searching for that ellusive command or function. If you have the extra screen real estate a Netscape window with the reference manual is great.

But when you really get coding and you have 5-10 terminals/editors open switching between desktops gets cumbersome and that's where a printed manual shines. Instead of flipping back and forth between windows you just look down at the page. Think of it as another 11" screen with an easy to use interface that you can put anywhere.

And for those of us who don't sleep next to their computers, some printed manuals make great cures for insomnia!

  21. Tough to find jobs months ahead of time. on Finding a Linux Job · · Score: 3

I'm currently a college senior looking for work and I'm having the hardest time finding a job for after I graduate. Just about all of the companies that I talk to are looking to fill immediate opennings, i.e. within two weeks. No one is interested in looking for someone who has the skills and the education, but isn't available for another two months.

At my school, most (if not all) of the recruiters looking to fill full time positions come in September. The Career Center says you should have a few offers by December. Then you should make a decision by Janruary. Well, that was true for CivE, ChemE, and MechE, but the only jobs available for CS at that time were from companies that "need people." Those are the jobs where you go to work eight hours a day and come home ready to die. *bleah* I had one this summer, I don't want another.

How am I supposed to get one of these "linux friendly" companies to take a look at me months in advance? I have the education and an excellent GPA (3.5). I go to the conferences to learn about new technologies, not the freebies. I've been using Linux for four years and I finally use it on my desktop. I do linux programming when I can, but my coursework takes up most of my time. And most of all, Linux really excites me. All the IPOs are cool, but I really don't give a damn. I just want a roof over my head, food in the fridge, and small part in the Linux Revolution.

Any help would be much appreciated.

  23. Can I be a patent officer? on More Stupid Patent Tricks · · Score: 1

It amazes me how many stupid patents are getting through the patent office these days. I would love to work for the patent office just so I could say, "That's not an original idea. Go do some real research." How hard is it to be a patent officer? Does it really matter? It seems to me that it must be nearly impossible to get a job at the patent office. That office alone has the power to dictate which company or person has the rights to restrict and charge for ideas that many of us feel are simple combinations of fundamental concepts. Large companies must have their fingers in the hiring process of that office. This is all just conspiracy theory, but if the patent office was hiring the best people for the job, would you expect patents such as this? Are these patents being passed because big business is lobbying to put incompetent people in the patent office? Think about it.

  25. IBM Deskstars rule! on Thoughts on the IBM 13G Deskstar? · · Score: 1

I've been using Seagate hard drives all my life. Prior to last Christmas, I had four of them, I thought they were great, then I decided to put a lot more space in my 486 Linux server. I decided on an IBM 10GB Deskstar for performance reasons. The IBM Deskstars are much quieter and cooler than the Seagates. I was always attempted to fry an egg on a Seagate Medalist. I wouldn't be able to use an IBM Deskstar as a hand warmer it's so cool.

Since then I've recommended IBM Deskstars to everyone buying components. I've never had any problems and they are very fast drives. Also, I get them from www.tjt.com. They have very low prices and shipping and the people there are smart and friendly.
