  1. Re:They will make a fortune on France To Invest One Billion Euros In Nuclear Power · · Score: 1

It's very difficult to change the output of a reactor rapidly.

France and various navies (nuclear propulsion) are the only people who do it.

It can be done safely (as France and various navies have proven), but if done by someone who isn't competent, Bad Things (Chernobyl) happen.

However, even if it can be done safely, it is not by any means optimal to run nuke plants in a load-following mode.

That said - it's a lot easier to create storage technologies to handle relatively predictable demand variations than completely unpredictable supply variations. With wind and solar, you must MASSIVELY overbuild generating capacity and storage capacity.

The thing is - if the delete had continued, it would have been bad for even those who didn't use it for primary storage.

I don't - the only reason I upload to Facebook is to make friends aware of my photos and tag themselves. Nearly all of my albums link to a Smugmug album containing full-res pictures.

The thing is - even the tagging info is of value, and that info is ONLY on Facebook. With the photos, the tags were deleted.

I haven't seen if the tags are back now that the photos are. I don't know if KIPI is still blocked and they just undid the retroactive delete, or if KIPI got unblocked.

If retrodelete is still possible I'm not sure if I will upload any more pictures though.

Well, to Facebook's credit, they did increase resolution significantly (max 2048 pixels up from 720 in spring 2011, which was itself an upgrade from 604 in 2010.)

I have always used Facebook for photos with lots of friends in the following manner:
    1) Upload to Facebook and tag
    2) Put a link to the corresponding SmugMug album in the Facebook album description

From now on unless this gets resolved promptly and well (I'm talking - ALL photos I've uploaded in the past year restored WITH tags) I won't be uploading any more photos to Facebook. I of course have the originals for everything, but uploading and tagging takes time and that time has now been lost.

Another sign that the people running it are out of touch with reality: The 8-day policy on many shows.

Now I can fully understand why one would want to hold off on putting a show online - the content providers would prefer if people watch the (apparently more lucrative) TV commercials over cable or broadcast TV. They want to give people a chance to get one of the "late airings" of the show.

So 5 days or 6 days would make great sense - Miss a show, either catch it later in the week, or catch it on Hulu just before the next episode airs.

But 8 days is dumb - With the prevalence of series with long-running storylines (IMO one of the positive effects of DVRs and online streaming - miss an episode and you're not lost for the entire season any more.), this means that if someone misses a show, they will wind up permanently on a "don't watch it on TV" schedule unless the show skips a week. If you miss one, and it becomes available on Hulu AFTER the subsequent episode airs on TV - why are you going to watch the next episode on TV when you haven't seen the preceding one?

The same things that made the Atom slow also made it EXTREMELY power-efficient. So the Atom is, if anything, the #1 reason for the success of netbooks - it was impossible to achieve such light weight and long battery life at that price point with any other processor (except possibly ARM - although most ARM-based netbooks are NOT competitive with Atom in the price/performance arena.)

However, Atom does not seem to have evolved/improved much at all. It's biggest Achilles heel was the platform's inability to effectively run streaming Video, although Adobe is more to blame than Intel for that - Flash is an evil CPU hog.

There's no way in hell that Toyota, one of the pioneers in hybrid electric vehicle technology, would have gone to another company for full-blown EV technology if that company didn't have a rock solid technology demonstrator.

Keep in mind, in addition to the "that's still 34% better" comments - Fossil fuel power plants don't have to worry about power-to-weight ratios and hence can be MUCH more efficient and cleaner than vehicle engines.

Admittedly not all of them are - we have a LOT of shitty legacy coal plants, but in general, it's a lot easier to make a highly efficient coal or gas power plant economically than to make a highly efficient vehicle engine economically.

Yes - I don't see how this article indicates that the business model has failed at all. I think, if anything, it has succeeded wildly - my guess is that the Roadster was likely less of a "fundraiser" than as a "halo car" for marketing. If you want to sell your tech to potential partners (Their partners list includes Daimler and Toyota) it helps a LOT to have a widely recognized vehicle.

A lot of times "halo cars" fail - but for Tesla it seems to have succeeded. They now have partnerships with major automotive manufacturers to license their tech. (Toyota RAV4 EV, SMART EV, Mercedes A-Class E-Cell).

Yup. It's simple - Silverlight has failed, and it is a mixed fault between the developers and Microsoft. Anyone targeting Silverlight at this point is an idiot - the writing is on the wall and it has been for a long time.

Things that are Microsoft's fault - Not making clearer specs so third-party implementations (Moonlight) could maintain parity with Silverlight in terms of support, instead of lagging behind like Moonlight has. Moonlight has been a failure because it has never supported anything other than example galleries full of backlevel Silverlight examples.

Things that are the developer's fault - Jumping immediately to the latest Silverlight release, cutting off access to anyone using a non-MS platform, making Silverlight less relevant.

The only thing keeping Silverlight alive at this point is Netflix, and that's just a matter of time - PC users are probably a small fraction of Netflix Instant Streaming users. Silverlight was supposed to allow Netflix to reach a larger audience than their old Windows Media based solution, but it utterly failed there.

As others have pointed out, Silverlight is a solution to a problem that no longer exists. It was supposed to break Adobe's Flash stranglehold - It failed to do so, instead, HTML5 and iOS did that.
