  2. Re:I want REAL a la carte. on A La Carte Cable TV Channels? · · Score: 1

but that defeats the purpose for the cable industry and the movie theatre industry, it's why there are 6 month delay agreements signed by the movie companies with the cable companies, the cable company pays x amount for the movie and the studio agrees not to put it to DVD for z amount of time, otherwise the cable company has no reason to buy the movie, people are gonna rent it instead of watching it on their network. Movies come out in stages: theatre, pay per view, cable/rental/purchase (movies used to be available to rent before you could buy them for anywhere from a month to three months) and finally over the air networks.

I have to agree here, I use windows simply because I don't feel that i can jump into a Linux distro and still function, every month or so i decide " Alright I'm going to install Linux and be done with it, so i start looking for a distro, and then i just get totally lost, I'm not a complete tech moron, but on the other hand i use my computer for personal use only, i don't wade in and code, and i don't get half of the stuff that comes flying at me when i look into linux stuff. Maily the reson i give up on my lionux installation quest is that I fear that i won't get it working and i'll be screwed.

and that was one of the major points, while you know and understand the command your average user will not, and rather than nvest time and energy in learning what the hell they need to know in order to get into OSS they'll simply pick up the windows disk and slap it in the drive. I have no doubt that Open Source software (i'm thinking primarily of Linux distros but not exclusively) is a better way to go, I think that the concept behind OSS is great, but for the average user the migration from windows is just too much of a pain in the ass.

  5. Re:More for all channels, but not the point... on Congress To Force Cable a la Carte Plans · · Score: 4, Insightful

nonestly i don't think people will end up paying less for cable, what i reckon is likely to happen is that the good channels will be billed at something silly like $5 a month, now that doesn't sound too bad, but figure a base charge for connection say $20-$25 maybe they offer a free channel for the top tier, maybe you add Fox, MTV2, and your favourite sports channel, now already you're at $35-40 a month, your cable bill is $10 cheaper but you have a whopping 4 channels, there's also the point that networks that run multiple channels, like ESPN and MTV and C-span would likely spread the programming so that you need to buy both MTV and MTV2 to get what you really want.

fair points, but remember that sony was in exactly the same position when it launched the playstation that microsoft was in when they launched the xbox, they were newcomers to the field going up against well established videogaming companies, sony got some great publishers and designers working ongames for their platforms, square for example, and that's why people will buy the platform, not for hardware specs, not because it was or wasn't first to market, but because it has the games theyw ant to play, personally i feel that the xbox is a better machine than the ps2, (built in hd, built in LAN, online play that actually works well and isn't all that expensive if you play multiple games online) If MS can get the Xbox2 to market that far ahead of the PS3 and have some great games for it, it stands a good chance of bringing Ms up to Sony's level in market share. i think that with sony's immense back-catalogue of games over Ps1 and PS2 that MS will be hard pressed to compete on game selection but hopefully they can get some of those killer apps out before the ps3 launch and level the playing field. oh and i bet halo2 is delayed till xbox 2 launches, i've been saying it for a year, the bastards are gonna make me buy more hardware just to play the damn thing

ok lemme think about this: you listen to independent music, what appeals to you about independent music? why wouldn't that aspect appeal to you in a live setting where you can experience that aspect in a more intimate environment than on CD? I honestly don't understand how you can be a fan of independent music and not think live shows in some cafe or small town dance hall would be enjoyable. I listen to everything from mega commercial international acts to the local bands who still don't have a Cd out, honestly i don't even go to big concerts anymore, too much money, too far to travel for the show, too impersonal. The small local shows however, really blow me away, i once saw one of my favourite local bands play in the local laundromat seating area, there were people packed in there, and they played happy birthday for a friend in the crowd (they're a punk band) and it was one of the 5 best shows i've ever seen.
