  1. Re:Couldn't agree more on ODF Plugins and a Microsoft Promise of Cooperation · · Score: 1
The biggest flaw in the ODF standard as its stands is that it doesn't really use XML's capabilities for, well, extensibility.

ODF is XML, so by default ODF has this ability. In addition, ODF has partial support of W3C XForms.

There is no way in ODF to include your own data with your own schema (in a separate namespace) and have OO.o preserve that data, keep it with the appropraite document elements, delete it if the associated document elements are deleted, and so on.

This isn't a problem with the format; it is a problem with the application.

Are they denying the damn thing is going to cost 900 bucks?

The $900 is a made up number by the analysts who wrote the article. I find that number hard to believe. However, Sony has always sold their consoles at a loss initially. If the analysts are to be believed, all this means is that Sony loses $500 per console in the first group of consoles. The Japanese might even be willing to pay this much initially (as happened with the PS2). By the time the console hits the U.S., though, you'll pay the same as you would for an Xbox 360.

For that kind of scratch I could buy a xbox360, a few games, and still have enough left over for a night with a couple of high priced call girls.

Wait, you spend $400 for an Xbox 360 and $60 each for a few (3) games, which leaves $320. Assuming each girl gets the same amount, this means you just boinked two cheap hos.

We had these installed in our office. The speakers were about the size/shape of paint cans. They actually pump out pink noise, because we perceive pink noise to be the same loudness at all frequencies (i.e. white noise sounds too harsh at higher frequencies). Everytime the power went out, the place got *really* quiet.

Incidentally, the pink noise system in our office had a mini-plug input. We never used that to make any illicit announcements... ;)

No, there is physical security and other methods that remain secure when all the aspects of the system are known.

Sure.. you can have a 256-bit key encrypted thingamabob - but the obscurity lays in the fact that you should be the only person with the key.

No, that's incorrect. You would be relying on security through obscurity if the encryption algorithm you were using wasn't subject to public scrutiny and thus, the security of the algorithm had never been truly tested. There would be a big question of whether the algorithm provided a high level of security. Secure methods are secure due to public review of the algorithm (i.e. complete knowledge of the internals means there is no obscurity).

About half of the PS2 games I own have Dolby Surround or Dolby Pro Logic II.

You people actually LIKE the phase-shift effects and subtle harmonic distortion from using Dolby AC3?

I'm not going to get into a DD vs DTS debate. I'm talking about the capability of the console to output 5.1 channel sound.

I also like how you went from [PS2 can't play AC3] from your link to [PS2 can't play 5.1]. I guess the DTS track I used during all of GTA didn't count, then? (you actualy expect dolby.com to mention DTS, too?)

The PS2 doesn't support 5.1 channel sound during gameplay period. And no, DTS doesn't count, because in the 6 games that actually have DTS it's DTS 4.0

The PS2 has no dedicated hardware to perform real-time 5.1 channel output. The CPU requirements of a software codec for Dolby Digital are higher than for DTS, which is why there are DTS games for the PS2. However, those games only use 4 channels.

The Xbox has a dedicated hardware codec for Dolby Digital 5.1.

Well, that's somewhat true actually. The XBox is capable of Dolby Digital 5.1 sound during gameplay, while he PS2 is not. I have a PS2, and it will only play sound in 5.1 during prerendered cutscenes (or playing DVDs). It will switch back to Pro Logic II for gameplay. Take a look at the intro to MGS2 on the PS2 for an example of this.

even though it's still going over the same link quality 44.1kHz/16-bit PCM link to the amp in the end, anyway.

It's not the link that's the issue. The PS2 just isn't capable of playing 5.1 during gameplay.

Well, that's for a different reason entirely. For instance, when U.S. citizens travel to Canada, they sometimes get asked whether or not they'll be visiting any farms. This doesn't automatically imply that visiting farms in Canada is illegal.

The ruling/communist parties in some countries have made threats towards the U.S. Whether or not that's a good criteria for determing entry is up for debate, but it has nothing to do with the legality of a U.S. citizen being a communist party member.
