  1. Wait for RoughlyDrafted... on Upcoming Firmware Will Brick Unlocked iPhones · · Score: 1

As the official spokesperson of the Mac zealot contingent, I'm sure RoughlyDrafted will feature a ten page article describing why exactly this is not evil, and how Microsoft did similar things back in 1992. It will be peppered with pie graphs, misleading statistics, and Photoshop abominations.

The rest of us, residing in that place known as reality, eagerly await the grasping at straws.

Er, pulling out the "everything is relative" card doesn't really add anything to the discussion, now does it?

Allow me to reiterate: I asked for concrete evidence that there exist serious flaws in IIS 6. If there are, I shall kindly shut up and contribute no further. Show me the proof I demand. Surely if it is as terrible as everyone is implying it is, you can provide this sort of proof, right? Leave the hand-waving and faith-based arguments at the door. They have no place in a discussion of computer security.

  5. Fewer logical fallacies, please. on Microsoft No Longer a 'Laughingstock' of Security? · · Score: 0, Troll

All I see is hand-waving "I bet there are tons of unpatched holes in IIS" sentiments in your post. I'd like to see proof that there exist unpatched IIS holes, not vacuous appeals to emotion.

You're perfectly aware if you'd said the same thing about Apache you'd be flamed to hell and back around here. I'm just keeping you intellectually honest.

  6. Hey, look, Google is evil! on Google Unveils Flash Ads · · Score: 2, Interesting

C'mon, I want to see you all trip over yourselves to apologize for Google. Because I'm sure that somehow, this is okay. There has to be some small technicality that redeems this company because the halo effect is not something that just goes away.

Anyway, life is good with Adblock and Filterset-G. They can use full-screen Flash ads for all I care.

  8. This brings up another problem... on Blogger Objects To Accusations Surrounding Vista DRM · · Score: 1

No one outside of the core development team at Microsoft can claim any competence on the DRM implementation - and again, no one can predict when MS can choose to suddely implement hitherto unknown features via Service Packs or Auto Updates.

    Ah, closed source strikes again!

If this is the argument you wish to use, then any individual with a modicum of intellectual honesty cannot accept either paper, because, after all, both are just speculation.

Because, Apple is GOOD because they are not Microsoft! Who cares that they're just another corporation out to take your money! Technology isn't about the best tools for the job, it is about creating emotional ties to a particular choice of implementation and zealously believing that somehow your choice is useful for everyone!

In the future, please keep up with the newsletter. It saves you the trouble from having to think critically about these things. :) We really don't like dealing with these sorts of questions.

Absolutely. It is utterly ridiculous that people nitpick the article's points as if to say, "aha, gotcha!" or "see, he *is* an idiot!" It is much closer than it was before, but that doesn't mean you can rest easy - no, it should be high time to surpass Windows and OS X once you catch up with them.

Complacency is the enemy here, don't espouse it. These sorts of outsider reviews are extremely helpful.

As evil as this is, don't think that MS doesn't know anything about backward compatibility. They already bend over backwards to ensure older programs run, often going to the level of fixing memory management issues via shims. Why would they want to create more work for themselves? Oh, right, because they are innately evil and out to screw everyone. I forgot what site I'm on.

"Oh boy! Look at us! We have a private runway we can land on because we are *so* important and special!"

It is far more impressive to see people who don't take themselves so seriously. Obviously, this s a rare trait, given the human condition of thinking oneself is at the center of the universe.

So are you saying that Slashdot is inhabited by 5 year-olds now? That seems a bit harsh. Usually it is best to cloak those sorts of remarks in more erudite terms and lace your posts with enough sarcasm such that they get modded funny. :)

  15. Question for Adblock users... on The Morality of Web Advertisement Blocking · · Score: 1

Just curious, do any Adblock users ever feel guilty about using it indiscriminately? Because I sure don't. And I tend to feel guilty about a lot of things that some other people don't (it sucks). I rather enjoy living a mostly commercial-free life, between DVR, DVDs, and ad-free web browsing. The world seems so much...quieter? Not quite the right word, but it is close enough. I think I probably rationalize it by saying to myself, "advertising is only becoming more and more commonplace, so I'm going to push back however much I can."

Jobs never said such a thing. The Apple site calls Safari the best web browser on any platform. It doesn't call it the best web browser for mobile development, nor does it try to label it as such. The "Safari is an SDK" argument is little more than cognitive backpedaling by people who can't fathom that, yes, even Apple can release things with quality issues.
