I've been using GNU/Linux exclusively for the past 2 years. I'm not an expert but definetly a power user. I started with Red Hat 7 and now using Fedora Core 2 - test 1 with 2.6.5 and KDE 3.2. A few days back, I downloaded all the 7 CDs of Debian Woody (having a T1 LAN has has it's advantages). I started with a lot of expectations but installing debian proved to be much difficult that what I was expecting. It took about 15 minutes to figure out what was going on. Since I had some work to do, I got back to my FC2. May be I'll give debian a shot sometime now. Is debian really hard to install or am I missing something? Does it come with a nice anaconda interface like Redhat/Fedora/Mandrake?
When the guy playing Pacman gets caught he gets fucked in the ass
Well, we should have a chick playing pacman then. Pac-chick. Pinky goes for the ass. Blinky for the love hole. Inky gets the twins. Lucky Clyde get a blowjob.
Well, I don't think so. Because, first of all, he's not that stupid. I do think the entire OS should be called GNU/Linux, instead of just Linux, as most of the packages are GNU stuff. Bash, GCC, GDB, GNU automake...heck, no standard distro comes without this stuff (it won't be a "standard distro" if it did). Since GNU has nothing to do with Java, we may safely call it Java, not GNU/Java. What do the other geeks prefer, open-java or free-java. My vote for free-java. It's more ethics that just coding practise:-)
Let's say RMS and ESR pushed Sun to open up Java. What are we gonna call it? Open-Java or Free-Java? Mind you, free as in freedom. If your program is free software, it is basically ethical
Classic Stallman, talking about ethics again. So guys, which one do you prefer? Open? Free?
The next major step should be to include Blender in various GNU/Linux distro. Since most of the linux geeks play those games anyway, why not have Blender?
lol. I wasted a lot of time myself when I first installed it. The good folks at fedora helped me out. Still, "mount -t cifs" is somewhat buggy. When I mount windows share without a login/password, it's giving a seg. fault. Let me know if it works for you.
smbfs support was left out intentionally. you can get the same results with "mount -t cifs". since it's a test release, they are testing the Common Internet File System. You got to recompile the kernel to get smbfs support.
How come we've never done THIS before? I run Fedora Core2-test1 (yeah, test1. didn't download the other two). Openoffice with the standard install. here's a list of stuff that isn't included in FC2
Mplayer - plays everything:-)
Xmms - 1.2.10 FC comes with 1.2.9
Firefox
aMSN
Thunderbird
d4x
lbreakout2
avidemux2 and mplex - great for my AVI2VCD purpose
wine
VLC
Kopete used to be on the list, but it comes packed now. Boy, don't I love my linux box!!! I tried to used windows but tired of installing stuff. C,C++,Perl,Python - why can't MS pack this stuff?
You are lucky. In addition to my vintage celeron, I got a friend's Toshiba laptop. It is making my life hell. It's bad that the temperature out there is around 45 degree centigrade (do the math for Farenheit) and damn thing heats up my room. I'm taking cold showers at odd times - 2 in the night, just to get some sleep. This mouse sure looks good. Got to find out where it's available in India.
ps:- I'm keeping the laptop on a wet cloth to cool it faster. Any better ideas?
Microsoft warned that three 'critical'-rated flaws in the Windows operating system
Just three? Heck, my granny can find 3 'critical' flaws. First one, "it sucks". Why can't they just admit that the OS is full of holes and is crappy?
and other programs could allow hackers to sneak into personal computers and snoop on sensitive data.
A note the whom ever it may concern. IT'S CRACKERS, not hackers. Thought `hackers' don't snoop on sensitive data by sneaking into computers. Eric Raymond Doo, where are you? We got some work to do here!!!
Yes, Linux won't be there for a while. But you got to remember the fact that the development of Linux started much later when compared to Windows and Mac.
And, no body pays you to develop high quality tools for GNU/Linux. When a hacker can't find a good software for his work, he writes his own and hundreds of other hackers join him. That is why the development of Linux is slow, compared to M$'s crappy products. Now, think of quality. No M$ product gives you the flexibility you get in a free-software. M$ can't even dream of hosting the tools you get with even the remotest of the Linux distros. I want a C compiler on my box. Windows won't give me one. Linux gives me the best ones. Simple, I stay with Linux.
Right now, I agree that Linux is not suitable for an end-user. If my granny wants to use a computer to search for some recipies, I wouldn't advice her to use my Linux box. When it comes to business, I can't even dream of using a system filled with useless crap(read: windows). I want the power to do whatever I want. I want to open up the code and see what it does and how it does. After all, that's the whole beauty of a computer. It does things you never expect it to do.
Instead of complaining, you can make Linux a better place to work. Why don't you start working on something that will make Linux compete with windows? I'm sure thousands of others will join you in the effort. Good luck.
Exacltly. A couple of years ago, I thought of giving Linux a shot!!! It was the toughest thing to do. First of all, I had no idea that Linux comes with sooo many packages. Took me a while to find my way around. But now, it's all very easy. The best thing about Linux is, _you_ can do whatever _you_ want to. And no "This application fu*king crashed. Do you want to send a fu*king report?" and crap. In the past two years, my GNU/Linux system never crashed. Why the hell can't that moron Balmmer see this? That is exactly why the world is moving towards free-software, free as in freedom(long live RMS). If I ever come across that Balmmer a**h*le, I'm gonna kick his ass.
Chess computers are being developed steadily and yeah, they can kick any GM's ass...that's just because they are machines. Gary Kasparov, after playing with Deep Blue remarked, "It's a machine!!! It doesn't feel pressure". So true...the media goes ga-ga about a champion playing with a machine but almost nobody bothers about the pressure factor...

Who are they? My pacman's got only 4 - Blinky, Pinky, Inky and Clyde
How are the ghosts gonna eat the pacman? Cannibals

Somebody mirror it. Slashdotted in less than 5 mins. man, what's going on?
Not Linus. May be RMS. He's the one who started the whole damn thing.

You mean a gang-bang? Boy, wanna see a frog with 5 heads? Get her to do the DVDA shot.
In 'Brief History of Time', Hawking talks about a bet for one year subscription to 'Penthouse'. Any idea about that bet?

Why whine about CUPS? Can't the great `hacker' write another HOWTO on configuring CUPS? Dude, stop it and go write a ``hacker's guide to CUPS''.
ewwwww...the worst thing over the net is goatse.cx Hell, put it as background and your kids will never close _any_ window.

That's one hell of a list. Nice to see Torvalds at the 5th place...More surprising is to see the prime minister of India on 8th place :-)
