You are very correct. The mother *should* pay more attention. However she may not have bought it.

Also, you are expecting society to take responsibility their actions. While it is a beautifull ideal, in practice it is unlikely. Do not get me wrong. Some people will. Most probably would, in fact. However it would only take one or two outrages, channeled through the media, to create an uproar.

I have P-M ThinkPad R40 -- not quite a T series, but similiar. With the standard battery (56whateveritis) I can get 6+ hours of battery time if I turn the screen brightness down all the way if I am only surfing the web or light coding w/o much compiling (on auto power mode the laptop usually runs at 600MHz, and the fan almost never switches on.

I have a thinkpad with a 1.3ghz P-M chip. I have been very happy with the performance -- both speed of the system, and battery life. As far as performance goes, in a simple test we ran (quicksort in java with the same version on all three machines), my laptop fared well against by brother-in-laws 2.4GHz P4 desktop (although it was a little slower) but it blew away my Athlon 2200XP desktop. Admittedly this was not the most scientific test (all systems do have the same speed ram at least) but I was impressed.

Belkin is sold in the local OfficeMax (small town :: no CompUSA/CircutCity/BestBuy/ect). While I have always been able to get them to work they do seem less likely to just work when first plugged in. I would much prefer to use the Linksys APs/routers, or even the Microsoft ones.

That being said I do not know what res he runs on his 19" moniter now, or what it is capable of. However, given that he can afford the 23" Apple LCD, I would imagine it can do at least 1600x1200, and also that he has a video card which can run the same.
