Honestly, I know a ton of people who liked BB for mail. Everything else pretty much universally sucked. I think MS will keep pushing mobile forever, so it will always be there... Android will continue, even if splintered, and Apple is king of the hill now, so who knows. BB, webOS, maemo, etc will be the also rans here. Which is a shame, as I really feel with a few tweaks to the browser, webOS is the nicest tablet platform I've ever used.

With RIM, their only chance is to make it as easy as possible for developers to bring their apps to the platform before they go under.

Just want to point out that Java, C#, NodeJS, Python, etc. offer a very large advantage over lower level languages. That is a bit of isolation from typical issues resulting from poor memory management. It doesn't mean you shouldn't be aware, but allows you to concentrate more on the problem domain, instead of dealing with the ancillary issues of your development platform. Many operations in Java/C# in particular can be as fast as the same operations in C/C++, after JIT it is compiled code.

Beyond all of this, the overhead for Java/C# is typically less than 5-10%, with modern smart phones commonly running Ghz processors, even multi-core, the overhead isn't that big of an issue. The bigger issue is running applications in the background that aren't resource aware, and run blocking operations, or don't offload well. I think that as the developer frameworks for mobile evolve it will be even less of an issue.

I had joked about maybe just downloading a CAM RIP, and decided a Drive-In would be better.. only slightly. It was a really slow-paced movie and was really expensive, if you count the $90 for the two all-day tickets (prequel films, and feature), then the two tickets at the Drive-In. Needless to say, won't feel bad if I download a BR-RIP on release.

Can't speak for anyone else, but I go out to the movies several times a month... I'll often download a pirate copy if I have to go to the restroom during the middle of the film, so I can catch what I missed. I will also download copies of movies I have bought, as it's often easier and faster than transcoding them myself. I'm not always a lost sale, and a lot of times I am an added sale because of "piracy". I also tend to buy useful software, I may pirate 2-3 versions after my initial purchased version though, before purchasing again. In the end, I'm just a frugal bastard who wants a bit more convenience, and value for my money.

Most recently, when using the VGA port on my video card, the correct resolution isn't detected, though not a huge issue for a server. Just the same, when you have an issue with hardware, namely drivers, it is far more difficult to resolve than on other platforms (mainly windows, but even OSX-homebrew is often less painful). The jump from simple, to very-complicated is very steep, and not well labelled at all. Even getting the correct application(s) to load for file-types, or adjusting your default menu structure (for the start/launch/main menu) is difficult. I write line of business web based applications for a living, I don't feel like getting into the inner bowels of my OS to do something a typical power user on windows can do far easier.

I don't mind licensing of drivers/vehicles in-use and being driven as this is a direct correlation of transit, separate from the ownership of a vehicle parked in a garage. I don't think it's possible to live on a large farm with no outside interaction, just the same, if you could, you shouldn't be at risk of losing it for doing so.

Sorry, but as someone who regularly uses Windows, OSX and Linux on the desktop, I have to say it's been very aggravating the past two years especially in desktop Linux... Binary drivers are even more of a pain to get running on a recent distro than in the past both for nVidia, and AMD/ATI.. though the FLOSS drivers have had a lot of progress, none of them (for AMD/ATI or nVidia) are sufficient for gaming. Beyond this, I had issues with Intel graphics around Ubuntu 9.04 (iirc), regression issues in the driver that most laptops used at the time.

The fact is, for those interested in gaming, Windows is the best bet.. on the high end, if you want a unix-like OS, you're better off with OSX. For servers, Linux now rules the roost, so to speak. That doesn't mean that Linux is in any way, shape or form at a usable desktop level. Ubuntu was close in the 8.x releases, but has slid. Mint is about as good as it gets today, imho, but still has a lot of rough edges for a typical user. There's a huge difference in what you/I will put up with from a free OS, and what your typical customer will.

Microsoft could create an API, that applications (during install) can register with (requiring an ActiveX, or .Net control, with an interface implemented). The windows API simply calls the application, which then self-checks for updates, and notifies the update manager that it, does/doesn't have updates... and upon user selection, or classification runs the updates via the update manager. It doesn't need to be tight integration, just an API with rules for the various apps to follow. MS *COULD* have done that back in the mid-late 90's.
