    I cannot comment on Lineage III, but at the time of Lineage II the technology innovation aspect certainly had its place.

    Lineage II uses a heavily modified version of the Unreal engine, and was the first ever to include 'loading on the run' feature. That is, to load seamlessly landcape while running the game.
    Tim Sweeney went to NCSoft in Korea to give his ideas on how to implement this feature, as it was not present in the actual Unreal engine at the time.

    When I built my home theater system 2 years ago, I decided to invest in a professional audio card.

    Its output is directly connected to my Hi-Fi amplifier (no pre-amp).

    The only thing to be careful about with such a setup is to not shut down your PC (reset/reboot is fine) while your amp is still on.

    Investing in a high grade sound card is the same as investing in a good amplifier or speakers : you are likely to use it for a long time (unlike a graphics card for example).

    Unless you are planning to use an integrated graphics solution (CPU+GPU) for your display needs, this shouldn't affect you.

    I won't be able to play BR if I don't use the on-board GPU ? Well .. who told you I was even interested in that ?
    MPEG-TS runs fine on my graphics card, thank you very much.

    Look at it from the customer point of view :

    When Microsoft migrated from DOS to Windows, every program and hardware still worked. You could buy newer machines and still work with your business tools and applications.

    When Apple migrated from Apple II to MacOs, every program and hardware stopped working.
    You had to dump and rebuy everything. The newer machines wouldn't run any of your business tools and applications.

    You can now relate to all the business that owned Apple IIs for their computer needs and found out the Macintosh offered zero, zilch compatibility with Apple II software or hardware.

    You are forgetting the DreamCast and SegaNet. (Phantasy Star Online anyone ?)

    SEGA shared its know-how with MS to help them build Xbox Live.

    Well, I'm sorry to tell you this, but what you cite was exactly the same when the PS2 came out against the SEGA DreamCast.
    The PS2 was more expensive, shipped later, and much harder to develop for than the competition. Yet it won.

    Couldn't find anything interesting or worthy in this short article.

    The problem with opto-computing is the enormous amount of money spent on silicon based one (read Intel, AMD), that dwarfs the advantages you get from using light instead of plain silicon electronics.
    (Steve Jobs is rumoured to have considered opto-computing at one time for a personal computer)

    And no, you don't just replicate the AND, OR, etc .. gates. Because light can cross itself without disturbance of signal, it brings new properties.
    Namely, to do matrix multiplications in O(1).

    There are specialised light computers for sale that do just that (at blazing speed).

    NASA.
    That means the US taxpayer's money paid for eveything in the design of the 747 and Boeing sold it for pure profit.

    And there's another thing called the FAA.
    It's purpose is to promote and give advantage to the american air industry by tailoring rules and specifications.
    Don't believe me ? Then check it yourself, it is written in all words in its official creation statement.

    Small example : ETOPS.
    ETOPS regulation defined how long at maximum should an airliner be able to fly with only one reactor operational. Other airplane makers strove hard to meet this requirement, and succeeded.
    When Boeing couldn't, well, the FAA just reduced the length requirement. Easy as pie.

    Most probably because you were working, and so had considerable money to spend.
    A whole generation of computer enthusiasts grew with ATARI ST and AMIGA machines because the PC was an overpriced computer (with a retarded architecture and a retarded CPU. not even talking about its OS .. )

    Eh .. Maybe you could have a look at what the wonderful machines of the past had.

    Both the NeXTstation (NeXT) and the ATARI Falcon 030 had a Motorola 56001 DSP, in addition to their main CPU.
    Such an inclusion boosted the range and availabity of new kind of software on each.

    I can't wait for DRM to completely fade away so bands can proceed to the next step : make available tracks at better than CD quality.

    Every soundcard worth its name nowadays (think audigy, etc .. ) is capable of outputting better sound sampling than done for the last 25 years.

    I wish I could hear my favourite bands in 192kHz/24 bits someday .. Right now, I can't even found anything above 44-48kHz/16 bits.

    What you describe looks a lot like recreating a continouous EMP effect using a directed beam weapon.
    However, the EMP effect has been well-known for more than half a century and a certain %, if not all by now, of military aircraft are hardened against such electromagnetic surges.

    Anyone with recent knowledge of the art cares to chim in ?

    Sorry to tell you that, but commodore always sucked at I/O with their machines.
    ATARI 800XL with disk drive was way way faster, as was the ATARI ST compared to the AMIGA reading files from floppy disk.

    That's funny, because we've been able to BURN a DVD, listen to MP3, browse the internet, and play a game with mono-core CPU, just by using Linux for years.
