  1. Why artificial limbs? on Brain Chip Approved For Paralysis Research · · Score: 1, Redundant

This sounds like a very cool development, but why not try to have the chip send impulses to a real limb rather than an artificial one. My (admittedly limited) understanding of the brain is that it sends an electric impulse to the muscles so why not try to emulate that impulse?

  2. Re:This is the best chat-up line ever! on Third Space Tourist is Set · · Score: 2, Interesting

I think a guy with $20 million to spend (waste?) on a venture like this would have little trouble picking up "exceedingly pretty but easily charmed women" whether he is going into space or not.

  3. Developers? on A Linux 'Ecosystem' For Cell Phones · · Score: 1

This may be a dumb question, but why is news of a linux-based cell phone in the "Developers" section of slashdot?

  4. Why 2 years? on Mercury Probe Delayed by Ten Weeks, and Two Years · · Score: 1

Mercury goes around the sun in 87 days. Assuming that the orbits are circles (they're pretty close) it should never be more than 86 days for the planet to be in an optimal position to launch a probe. So, why would it be off by two years? What am I missing here?

  5. Re:XP in a nutshell on Extreme Programming Refactored, Take 2 · · Score: 1

Collective ownership of code is part of XP, but hardly describes it "in a nutschell". I'd say that a better description of XP in a nutshell would be "Test driven iterative development".

  7. Why does it have to be water? on Rover Cracks Mystery Of Mars Spheres · · Score: 2, Interesting

NASA seems to be asserting that because they are spheres they must have formed in water. Any geologist know why they could not be volcanic and still be spherical?

  9. Re:Is there enough sample points? on Magnetic Field Mystery Solved? · · Score: 2, Interesting

The NASA trend lately has been to send probes to study just one planet rather than do the solar system tour that we did with Voyager. Since we've already sent such missions to Jupiter and Saturn, maybe Uranus and Neptune are next.

  10. Any GUI Clients? on Ease Into Subversion From CVS · · Score: 2, Interesting

Are there any GUI clients like wincvs for subversion yet? It looks like a much better tool, but I don't see my group switching unless there is a client that is at least as good as wincvs.

  11. We need ONE ratings system on Game Content Ratings Not Always To Be Trusted? · · Score: 3, Insightful

What we really need is a consistent rating system for all forms of entertainment. Movies, television, video games and music should use the same system to avoid confusion about exactly what a rating means in one system verses another. I'm not sure how to go about doing that since these industries are all independent, and I'm reluctant to get the Government involved in a ratings system, but I think it would be the best solution for kids and parents.

  12. No practical use?!? on Mono and dotGnu: What's the Point? · · Score: 1

I fail to understand how making a compiler for a platform that does not currently support .NET (i.e. Linux) has, according to the article, "no practical use". As a developer who works a lot with .NET and C#, I'd love the opportunity to deploy some of my web applications on a Linux server, and I'm looking forward to the time when Mono gets good enough to support it.

  13. Re:"Co-opt Java" on How C# Was Made · · Score: 5, Insightful

I don't know why Java developers always feel the need to point out that C# took a lot of ideas from Java. I don't see C++ developers always pointing out that Java's mandate was to "co-opt" C++. Of course C# took a lot of ideas from Java (I don't think Microsoft has ever denied this), because Java got a lot of things right. C# also made a lot of improvements (event handling is MUCH improved in C# for example) and is a great language to program in. I think it would be even better if there were a .NET runtime for an OS other than Windows, but the good people on the Mono project are working on that already.

  14. About time... on Beyond the Standard Model of Particle Physics · · Score: 2, Informative

Of course, we could have learned this about 10 years ago if the U.S. had not revoked the funding for the superconducting supercollider. I was a physics student at the time and interested in particle physics, and it's sad to see that we are just now starting to recover from that decision.

  15. What's the big deal? on Tivo Tracks Superbowl Viewing Habits · · Score: 1

I fail to see what the big deal is here. If Tivo decides that they want to sell ALL of the information they gather about you, and you sign an agreement saying it is ok, then Tivo can do whatever they want with that data. If you don't like Tivo's privacy policy, just don't get a Tivo. In a free market, if privacy is a big enough deal to enough people, the market will figure that out and someone will make one that does not collect any data on it's customers.
