I was offered two Perl jobs in the 6 figure range within the last 6 months. Your statement is simply untrue. Unless you consider 6 figures chump change, in which case I guess you are a bad-ass .NET programmer in a penthouse.

In my experience (and no I've never been charged with a crime or had any reason to be so) treating police with respect gets you one thing: an officer who feels empowered to fuck with you as much as he wants. It takes a certain personality type to want to be a police officer. As far as speed limit activism goes everyone should join the NMA http://www.motorists.org/ Their website sucks, but they are actively working to get rid of the things we think "someone should do something about."

Proportianal elections tend to lead to party solidification. Whether virtually by party affiliations for certain bills/issues, or actual merges over time to secure power. The result of which it seems, would be once again a very small set of parties with much chaos in between.

Much of this could be solved by Instant Runoff Voting. The rest could be solved by the complete re-engineering of human nature to vote for what they see gives them the greatest short term benefits.

Perl still manages to reliably not suck. Catalyst can do magic scaffolding etc..., but lets you get as down and dirty as you want, and scaffolding isn't required. It also has the distinct advantage over other web frameworks in that it can use anything in the CPAN. It doesn't tell you how to do things, just makes them simpler.

Perhaps you didn't take note of the screen realeastate bit. 4,800 x 3,600 on 3 21" monitors. Screen is nice if I'm SSH'd somewhere, but please, I've got to justify these things somehow!

I have a lot of screen real estate (3 21" 1600x1200) but I've found that the best thing for me recently is the use of tabs in the Gnome Terminal rather than a bunch of terminals open all over the place. I changed my config to put the file I'm editing in vim as the tab title, otherwise the current directory and it saved a stupid amount of time for how simple it was. As for what goes on what monitor, I prefer to have Firefox in one, code in the other, and databases in the other. Sortof an MVC pattern.

What is it about dressing in more expensive, less comfortable clothes that makes work somehow more productive? Its the same paternalistic attitude toward employees that makes them work in 8 hour shifts regardless of their occupation. I, as a programmer, do not screw the head on a doll, or bolt manifolds to engines all day long. My productivity cannot me measured in such simplistic terms as widget output per day. Yet I'm required to show up 5 days a week and sit in my cube for 8 hours regardless of my output. Fortunately my boss doesn't care (or at least complain) about me wearing the same clothes I would at home.
