  1. This looks wrong. on First Pix From New Dune Miniseries · · Score: 3

Personally, I'm a pretty big Dune fan but this just looks messed up.

The spice is supposed to give the Fremen "blue within blue" eyes...perhaps it just a budget thing but it just looked like they just hired the "Aryan Nation Acting Troupe".

The attire: This is a planet where the Terran Sahara desert would be considered a water-rich oasis. The images portray people running around in Xena-esque garb, which is wrong. Could someone point out one of the images where someone is wearing a stilsuit? To make it worse, one of the images has Paul bare-chested! Talk about that sacrilege of water wasting! (Ok, they could be inside one of the water-tight fremen shelters but still! The suit is an important symbol in the Fremen culture.) No stilsuits and some of them are wearing heavy, cumbersome clothing.

Blades: Traditional Fremen daggers are made from the teeth of sandworms, if I remember correctly. So perhaps Gurney was wielding an off-world weapon?

Fremen: I know looks can be deceiving but these people need to look somewhat like desert hardened survivalists. Supposedly they can take out the Padishah Emperor's Sardukar terror troops. I don't see that here.

All I see is series that may do a few cross-overs with the Hercules-Xena series and all the good guys do flips and acrobatics to take out the bad guys in a non-lethal (and comedic) manner. The fremen are killers, pure and simple. Nothing too personal, its just a basic fact of survival. Even children are taught how to kill at an early age. The survivor of a dagger duel dessicates the loser and keeps the water. The survivor also gains all possessions and marital ties of the loser. I wonder if that will come into play in this series as well?

I hate to be pessimistic but I'll give it the benefit of the doubt and try to watch it if it shows in my area. If they butcher either genre (movie or book) I'll be one who won't watch it again.

    Apparently you missed the point.

I could care less about Britney or Disney or even their relationship. I thought I made that clear at the beginning of my post...sorry. The point isn't that Britney's got a bad(or good) thing going.

The previous post's claim was "don't support the RIAA by buying a CD, go see them in concert instead." My statement merely said that on occasion even the concerts subsidize the RIAA. If someone intends to financially boycott the RIAA or some corporate entity, that person should be fully aware of all the monetary outlets of that organization.

Do I account for every cent that leaves my hand? Yes, I try to. You make it sound like conscious consuming is a bad and crazy thing.

  4. This isn't a big deal. on Web Censors Prompt College To Consider Name Change · · Score: 1

I don't see what the problem is. I'm from northern Minnesota (not too far from Fertile, MN) and one of the more appealing colleges in the area is Moorhead State University. Moorhead, MN, is across the river from Fargo, ND, for those of you who aren't aware of this.

The funny thing about this is that if you want to drive from Fertile to Moorhead, you go through Climax, MN.

There's even an urban legend about a woman who got into a car accident and died in Climax on her way down. (pardon the pun) Allegedly, the headline was, "Fertile woman dies in Climax on her way to Moorhead."

If you don't want to go to college in Moorhead, you can always go to BSU (Bemidji State U.), home of the Beavers.

So I don't see what the big deal is about...so waht if it gets a few snickers? It's not the end of the world.

Just think about it, how can you increase the amount of money people spend to register domain names?

You could increase the cost of a domain name but there's now competition so prices should stay as low as possible to remain competitive.

The other would be to increase the number of domain names a person would want to buy.

Now, instead of MS needing to buy up .com, .net & .org, they'll feel the corporate need to get .sucks, .blows, .xxx, .sex, .etc! Suddenly, there's a *lot* more domains that these people will be buying just for preventative purposes, etc.

Now if that isn't a get rich quick scheme...

Isn't Ticketmaster affiliated with the RIAA in some way?

I'm just wondering how much, if any, the "big media" companies get from concerts?

Excusing the fact that I'm discussing "musical talent" that I don't care for but take, for example, Britney Spears or that all-boy group, LipSync (I think that's right...I don't watch Mtv anymore). Now, Britney used to be a cheerful little mouseketeer and so did one of the LipSync'ers. When flipping past the Disney channel on my way to Sci-Fi, I see them, quite often, playing their concerts. Disney is a really powerful media corporation...after all, they control ABC.
Who says that these "musical talents" weren't generated by Disney? That Mickey doesn't have his little fingers deep into this industry?
They don't publicly announce that, I'll admit...but they don't exactly annouce that they fund studios in the adult entertainment industry either.

Well, I suppose I should apologize for the rant and the FUD, since I can't substantiate my suspicions with cold, hard facts but be wary of how you support artists. Things aren't always what they seem.

I'm try to respond to the two replies I got here. Its good to see that people still read the Bible. And anyone who hasn't...I strongly reccommend it. At the very minimum, its a compilation of some very good stories.

Do I want to wait until I see him in person? Yep. Jesus (for me, at least) is someone worth waiting for. Even if he doesn't exist, I'll still wait.
That doesn't mean until then I'll take a Faustian lifestyle of wine, women and vice. Its tempting but that's it (for me).
But I'm not one to go "Oh Lord, look at how I worship you and brag how great you are and how I know you're the One True Path and how everyone who believes differently is foolish and misguided. I also know that you put science there to test our faith..."
(Ok, I'll admit...you're probably not like that either and I do like to exaggerate a little. :)

But the fact is, I do take to heart the fundamental teachings Jesus brought to the world and I do my best to adhere to them and the 10 commandments. If you want, you can consider that worship. Maybe it is, maybe it isn't. I do know that my definition of worship(for me) is not to be put on some high pedestal with people going "I'm not worthy!" but rather, that people genuinely listen to my advice when I give it and take it to heart....at least to the point of evaluation. I always guessed that Jesus would kinda be the same way.
Of course, it could be a twist of irony for Jesus to really be alive and then on judgement day wipe out everyone except for the ones that sat there kissin' his ass.
    (Pardon the crudeness.)

The thing that I always enjoy is the fact that if the whole Christianity hoopla is real and not some reason to keep monarchial rule an unquestionable government, we get to see Jesus and all that good stuff. Even if he smiles and says, "I believe you're taking the escalator down, my son." Won't atheists feel dumb.
And if there is no afterlife? No one's gonna be laughing at you anyway...you'll be worm food.

Perhaps he's speaking to you through me...*knock knock*
And perhaps not. Who knows, I can't verify that I'm God's messenger. I just know that I'm speaking what I honestly believe to be my Truth. Its your privilege to take it for whatever you feel its worth and as long as you do think about it (instead of blindly disregarding/accepting it) you do me honor. Simple as that. :)

Ok, this is nuts talking about the "farmer vs. rainforest" like this.

Truth about slash-n-burn is that they take a chunk of rainforest, burn it, and convert it into short-term farmland. The soil it very fertile because it is pristine/untouched and has a lot of biological decomposition invested in it over the millenia.
Humans come along and strip it of its nutrients. That's right, not merely converting it to farmland but they utilize very poor land stewardship to strip the soil of its fertility. Similar to paving it over with a parking lot.

This causes a nasty side-effect: The farmland becomes poor so in order to keep up productivity they need to move on to a new patch of ground.

So, the whole "We shouldn't protect the rainforest because it hurts farmers" isn't really valid. Its similar to wanting to take away someone's rights because you're "protecting the children."

After all, there would now exist a DVD player for the community and all those claims about "we just wanted to play DVDs on Linux" may not be as important anymore.
