Its nice to know that people like this are living in Minnesota. Call me crazy (as many do:) but I feel that Minnesota (Minneapolis-St. Paul more precisely) will grow into a very influential hub for IT and OSS. Admittedly, temps;)
The biggest reason stopping me from purchasing UL and Everquest is the requirement that I play over one of there servers. Personally, I am one of the many that love the multiplayer feature. I just happen to insist playing in the controlled environment of my LAN. I don't like using StarCraft's chat feature except for "gg" as I like the idea having all the people I play with in earshot/shouting range. Same with Diablo....and the group taunts I get when I hit the lava (ie: "Way to go, Stef!")
I'm a RPG nut too but I really don't like to deal with a lot of people I don't know. PKing has a lot to do with this. I don't mind PKing but there's a subtle difference in having your newbie character waxxed by a cheater as opposed to having that PKer in the same room with you. Something along the lines of "Wookie Chess Strategies."
It doesn't have to do with just volcanic ash. Pollution from our populated and industrial areas that go into the atmosphere are also responsible for some of the redness in sunsets and quite possibly this eclipse.
Perhaps I need proper definitions here but is it safe to assume that (K)knowledge, (A)ability, and (C)contribution are mutually independent qualities?
I know that proportionality does not indicate proof of a cause-effect relationship. It indicates the potential for this or a common link (a master cause, for example).
Assuming that they are indeed independent of each other (for the sake of argument), how does (H)hostility relate to combinations of large and small values for K, A, and C?
You're a math person (ok, math genius...but that's merely my opinion;) so you'll understand when I suggest that the proof is incomplete.
You state that when K, A, and C are all sufficient (large) that H should be proportionally small. You also state that K->0, A->0, and C->0 indicates H->inf.
So you picked a function, tested it to the constraints and it passed. (Physics logic of "Guess a method, if it works, use it!")
But, ('=' signifies proportionality)
H = 1/(K+A+C), assuming K,A,C >=0
also matches the claimed constraints provided.
I guess my non-mathematical way of asking the question is, will hostility still be high if the person only sucks in 1(or 2) of the three attributes? (Is that even possible?)
Admittedly, the proportionality isn't perfect, there'll always a few people that like to throw off the statistics.:)
I also know that my math skills are occasionally lacking so feel free to correct me on anything wrong I have stated.
The full verion of Marathon had labelled some of the levels in honor of Beavis & Butthead. I guess at the time, it made it uber-cool but now it seems to make it a little dated. Still a fun game though. It also featured (for the first time)a couple of my favorite little bits in the FPS genre:
1) The secondary firing key for multiple fire modes. I think Marathon was a first here.
2) The flamethrower. I haven't seen this used in any other FPS but I really don't play that much any more. I remember putting this weapon into Tbyte's "X-Xar" and it was a very fun/deadly weapon against the foot soldiers. Alas, it'll be a long while until that game is released now.:(
I noticed that Unreal has feature #1 but it won't be the first FPS I experienced this with.
I know generalizations are bad(in general?;) but I would think that there is a certain level of arrogance that goes with American movie making.
I think it would be a hard thing for a community that has had the title of "best" and "leading edge" to (or at least believed they had that title) start taking tips and pointers from other "lesser" communities.
After all, didn't we take the Godzilla storyline from Toho and make it into the best blockbuster that genre has ever seen?
*pause for snickering and all out laughing to subside*
Leno made the comment along the lines that Hollywood just made the big lizard quicker...did you see how fast it went to video?!?
As far as I know, Toho is still trying to get the bad taste out of their mouths. In defense of the movie though, Godzilla(the monster) looked great, IMO.
Jackie Chan is allegedly the biggest superstar to hit the far east...his fan base is HUGE, yet he said it was virtually impossible for him to break into Hollywood. Of course, Michelle Yeoh's "Wing Chung" still ranks very high on my list and she made it into a Bond film...
Kiki's Delivery Service and Princess Mononoke are ground breaking because the give the notion that maybe cartoons aren't just for kids...of course, this has been the case off shore for a long time.
My favorite comment while watching PM was a parent's saying, "Hey, this isn't like Pokemon!"
My only real gripe about PM, in fact, was that the violence seemed to lack some of the gore. But that isn't the case, I got that impression merely from the scene where they guys' head and/or arms were shot off cleanly with an arrow such that there wasn't any blood spurting. There was plenty of gore when it came to the spirit animals and I really do need to watch the movie again. (so no flames please;)
Would I love for Hollywood to shy away a little from their mainstream "blockbuster cookie-cutter?" Yes, I would love more adult based shows that don't have to go through this sanitizing first. Its almost as if all "adult" humor needs to be tongue in cheek....*sigh* I would love to get up Saturday mornings to catch an episode of Ranma 1/2....
Ack! I'm cutting into my gym time...gotta go! Have a great weekend everyone.
Yeah, this is a little redundant in that someone beat me to the punch but I thought this was pretty funny. Of course, I have no moderation points to reflect that but the sacrasm in this piece has definitely put a smile on my face.
Of course, the real kicker would be if this coward (sorry, but you didn't leave your name so I'll have to refer to you as a coward...no offense) was genuinely sincere.
Ok, well...I better get back to work. That was a pretty funny read though.
The most I'd to is treat her as my best friend and as an equal, regardless if people thought otherwise. Of course, this is also the least I would do as well. (The love and cherish part is kind of a given.)
Yeah, I guess I'll agree...being you used the term "most" and not "all."
The double standards also suck.
I hope I can add that its also an often difficult thing to deal with the fact that a potential partner is also one that is better at doing the things that you do best. Well, ego wise at least.
Perhaps for a person who has grown up with the "brawn over brains" philosophy, it isn't as hard to be with a woman who's "smarter than you are" because of the sour grapes parable reasoning. My brother was one of these and he was very effective at getting the smart/geeky grrls in his classes to do his homework for him. Apparently the attantion he gave them was worth it. *shrug*
But a person who grew up being ostracized by his/her peers because they had the reputation of being one of the brainiacs doesn't necessarily have to deal with this threat to their area of expertise when they keep chasing people that are complementary (ie: the stereotypical cheerleaders). Generally speaking, of course. I've known intelligent cheerleaders and I've known people that break all these rules.
But until a person gets out of the "small pond" and they've never dealt with this situation, its a new and often deflating thing.
Not to sound like Forrest but one of my mother's phrases was that no matter how good I am at something, there will always, always be someone else better at it. Of course, my dad conceded to my mom being the "smart one" although I found out after I've reached adulthood that there was indeed a "method to my father's madness" and he is a very intelligent individual, just not in the same fields as my mother.
Personally, I don't like to bring GRE scores on a date. A person can discriminate on intelligence just as easily as they can on appearance...and just as easy as physical appearances are deceiving, so is the appearance of intelligence.
Ok....time to go post on one of the more recent articles.:)
Yeah, its amazing what money can buy. Apparently, a person can even get a "rental" chick with the right amount of money (and the proper area knowledge).
You kind of opened yourself up for this but would you present another solution if I placed a few constraints on the system?
Here are are the constraints(not necessarily in order of priority):
1) She should be intellectual. Not necessarily three standard deviations (or more) above the mean IQ but personally, the higher the better.
2) She should be financially responsible and independent. This means she knows how to design and follow through on a budget plan.
3) She understands the need to code and tolerates some of the unfortunate habits that go with it such as occasional {bad eating habits, coding marathon to implement a feature, etc}. If she were one to be willing and capable of sharing in this experience could be considered a bonus.
4) She is at least partially aware of her health and body such that she will make educated decisions about her diet and exercise routines. She may give/take advice from me about my regimen but not infringe upon my program.
5) The relationship should be viewed as an equal partnership as opposed to "boss-worker" or "master-slave".
6) Being best friends would be a must. This also means its fun just to hang out and do whatever once in awhile.
7) E-mail is an acceptable form of communication when outside of vocal range.
8) She should be able to tolerate my family in all its quirkiness and understand that my family is an extended part of myself.
9) She should tolerate role-playing enough to understand that to me its like "poker night with the guys" is to others. Participating would be a bonus.:)
10) She should find me physically attractive. This is probably one of the toughest constraints right here...or easiest. This would (I hope) vary from person to person. The reverse of this should also be true.
11) She share some of my ethical views about life. Things like its not good to impose personal morals on anothers and sex is not a casual and indiscriminate activity. (One or fewer partners in this activity with *no* children.)
12) She considers herself capable of being nice, funny, shy, honest, etc. (Not bossy, self-righteous, controlling...*shudder*)
There, I think that pretty much covers the constraints. I wish you luck if you're brave enough to try and solve that one...
My friends joke that this is why complex analysis comes so naturally for me. I spend so much time delving into the imaginary. But I do understand that relationships can be complex. I just tend to be the real part. >;)

I'm not one for hitting bars/clubs. Mainly because I don't smoke, don't like to smell like an ashtray and I can't dance. I can jump up and down a little and wiggle awkwardly but my body is designed more for utility and heavy physical labor, not style and finesse. I also cannot keep a beat...hehehehe
I have nothing against people who smoke. Its a habit just like anything else. I just personally don't like the taste or the smell, unless its cherry scented pipe tobacco. >;)
So if I were to look, I suppose the net would be the first and 'natural' choice. www.userfriendly.org has a link I believe.
You are right. Relationships are hard work. If a relationship is what you want.
I've seen too many use the facade of seeking a "real relationship" just for a physical interlude. Seeing this shocks me everytime I see it but it really isn't any of my business.
My schedule is such that I don't have the time necessary to put into what I feel to be a meaningful relationship. I'm sure I could manage financially but my most important resource is my time and I have too many things going right now. If I want to be in a relationship, I want it to be as near perfect as I can get it and that means putting in an amount of time I just don't have right now.
I generally get up around 6:30-7:30 for work, hit the gym for an hour after work and finally get home around 6-7pm. I'm one that really needs his sleep so I am heading to bed around 9:30. This gives me 2-3 hours in the evening to eat, unwind from work, manage bills, work on my personal programming agenda(even 2 hours isn't enough for this passion). That leaves weekends, assuming I have nothing better to do. Well, I my friends come over one day (I GM the game) and I use the weekends to really get into the chunks of my code. I also spend a little free time on Sundays to catch new episodes of Simpsons/X-files.
Now anyone could look at my schedule and make changes by shortening or removing things and then proclaim shenanigans on me and say I have the time to be in a relationship if I want to make time for it. But I don't want to. I like spending my personal time the way I spend it. I admit, I do have a (kind of) SO but its understood that its only a friendship kind of thing. I manage to spend a couple hours a week hanging out and doing things with her. That and she has is heading to med school within the year so any type of romance wouldn't be practical at point in our lives. I spend more time communicating with Nz & others over e-mail. Of course, that communication means a lot to me and quite often puts a smile on my face. *Thanks, Nz!*
Yeah, I know I'm pretty sad when it comes to my personal life but that's the way it is sometimes. No regrets.
Actually, there are a few things that "underweights" can do to increase body mass. Of course, I no longer have that problem...Norwegian genetics have kicked into full force so I'm on the upside by just a few pounds.
Dieting the wrong ways can help bulk up mass but assuming that you want to gain muscle, that isn't the best.
Working out 3 times a week MWF or TRS works ok. Make sure you do some stretching etc, so to minimize chances of hurting something and do some light weightlifting. It'll take a few weeks for your body to adjust to the resistance workout but after that you should be able to begin to push yourself. (Don't use free weights without a proper spotter!!!) Any new muscle groups you work will usually take 2+ weeks to get acclimated to the program. (age varies this)
Squats/leg workouts will help you gain the weight the fastest but complement it with some upper body because chicken legs and chicken wings (results of 100% upper xor lower body workouts) are unbalanced.
30 min - 1 hour should be sufficient for any workout. If you feel like you can go longer than an hour, odds are that you're not pushing yourself hard enough and vice versa with the being totally exhausted at the 30 minute mark.
Drink plenty of water, it helps move nutrients, wastes around and is used as a cooling system.
Hope that helps...any more questions, just ask... Vel
Well, if you like Matt Damon, take in a viewing of "The Talented Mr. Ripley." It was...well, interesting.
Personally, I feel it would be a rather big stretch for Damon to get the mannerisms of Peter Parker down. I think there are better choices out there. As far as the whole being well built part: In comics virtually everyone is well built unless their appearance as something else sends a message about the feelings of the character. How many SO's of superheroes are average looking? I mean average looking for the real people you see every day, not average looking for a supermodel/hunk of the month.
So, it may be a little disenheartening to see a *wimpish* biochemistry geek (who has a job as a photographer to help pay the bills) fill the role but the other option is to either make the pre or post-accident Parker CG modified. Which may not be such a bad idea anyway as long as there is a definite plot there and Spiderman can move faster than Jackie Chan. Jackie has the physical attributes/techniques down pat for Spider-man. Its Peter Parker he'd have trouble with.
Bummer about Brandon though...talk about typecasting.:)
As far as the other characters...I'd like to see a well done comic based movie (with plot) that didn't look like a Hollywood cameo gallery. Some lesser known actors or unknown (but good) ones to fill all the gaps. Anything else would just be an extension of the campy old Batman sitcom with guest villains.

Yeah, I know I'm pretty sad when it comes to my personal life but that's the way it is sometimes. No regrets.

Beefcake!
j/k >;)
(Don't use free weights without a proper spotter!!!)
Any new muscle groups you work will usually take 2+ weeks to get acclimated to the program.

So, did you have any problems with all the extra skin? If so, how did you handle that problem?

Well, if you like Matt Damon, take in a viewing of "The Talented Mr. Ripley."
:)
It was...well, interesting.
Bummer about Brandon though...talk about typecasting.
Ok, that's my 2sense.
