exactly, by letting the open source community use the patent protected software, IBM can be assured that no other company can use the develloped software that comes forth of it, and in the same time they have other people who "researh" new uses for their patents.
I think it is really clever to let the open source community benefit by allowing them to use the patents.
what about api calls which are native to windows, or even directx applications, I don't think that they will be able to "emulate" all this without a performance hit (or at all for that matter).
Or are they just talking about the processors and their native instructions?
yes, but my point was that you could show them your appreciation for their effort of "finishing" a game that was already doomed to end up in the garbage bin before it was even released; and although you could thank them by buying their games, they wouldn't know that you also liked the idea of releasing an "unfinished" game for free.
Maybe donating money is a little exaggerated, but you can still show your appreciation with your thanks...
You could show your them your sympathy and good heart by donating some pocket change to them... so maybe some other companies will do the same with their unfinished/obsolete games (sam & max anyone?)
The only problem is that their site is in japanese, and although "the fish" does a pretty good job, I can only make out their street address; (bottom of their site)
You are free to download the game from their website, but are not allowed to share that file to others. Also you get a download link that will only work for you (so you cannot share the link with others) Now, I think they add hidden data to their file wich contains your IP adress or something, so they can track who is sharing their files.... I'm still working out a theory for what reason they would need that information, but anyway.
Now my question is to all of you who downloaded the game from rockstar to make a MD5 sum of the file they received, to check if indeed the files are different, or that I'm just too suspicious about the whole thing.
You can add your MD5 sum as a reply to this message, and of course any conspiracy theory is welcome.
Oh yes if you need to download the MD5 summer program got to this adress:
If it is truly the kids computer (so you have another one with all your important data on it), then I should let them have full privileges, and let them explore the computer on their own. How else will they know what a computer can 'really' do, if you just let them have restricted access to a single game directory.
Let them explore, let them familiarize with the computer, they learn from their mistakes: if you do something wrong, like deleting system files, you probably wont try that again.
When my parent bought me (well it was ment to be for the whole family) a 286 computer with dos installed, I knew nothing, and neither did my parents. so I explored, and I found a 'help' command, and a 'dir' command, and I found different types of files (the ones you can execute, and others)...
So once again: It's not that bad when something goes wrong, format the disk, and reinstall.
However I would recommend on restrincting access to the internet, so they can't accidently download malware.
Didn't the governement say that a 128 bit encryption was enough for encrypting your private information?
Must have heard it wrong then.

Well if trash is private property, then Bill Gates has a problem (Bill gates used code trown away by company's to understand how operating systems and alike worked) Maybe some company *cough* SCO *cough* could sue him for stealing private property

it's a win win situation.

so true, I just have to keep telling my parents NOT to open those e-mail attachments, but do they listen, NO...
"But it is from someone I know, how could it be dangerous?"
sigh
Why did they cancel sam & max 2?
it looked promising, and for me it was the start of lucasart's comeback
I hope they reconsider, maybe some e-mails to pr@lucasarts.com will help...
idea to "pick" the lock: use a flashlight, and shine it trough the keyhole...
I was wondering, aren't those the same 2 companies who wants DRM controled computers?
Well I tried to download the file a dozen of times, and I get disconnected every time from there server with an error message.
Maybe they know that I discoverd their dirty little secret...
Ok I got a little conspiracy theory here

What about nokia cellphones?
don't you have to dispose them when they burn a hole in your pants?
