While that's a nice little bundle of syllables, it isn't true. RAM isn't like cellphone minutes. Here's some more nice sounding syllable collections (with editorial commentary), but they aren't true either:
Unused harddrive space is wasted harddrive space, so start ripping!
Unused bandwidth is wasted bandwidth, so make sure you're constantly downloading.
Unused car seats are wasted car seats, so never drive a sedan without four passengers!
Unused sleeping pills are wasted sleeping pills, so take them all at once!
Unused condoms are wasted condoms, so wear them all at once!
Of *course* it'll gain traction among corporate users. Because they have not fucking choice! What part of "vendor lock-in" is hard to grasp?
Actually, they've got lots of choices. What they don't have are choices free from consequences. It isn't Microsoft locking them in, it's themselves. They can switch to Mac OSX. Or Linux. Or FreeBSD. Or Solaris. Or even <gasp> a heterogenous environment. But there will be consequences. For many companies those consequences will be too expensive. But if some truly do wish to get out of their "lockin", there is nothing stopping them.
I know it's fashionable to tell other people that they have no choices, but it is not true.
On thing I have noticed is that Vista has re-done the menu layout and prompts and it now closely resembles KDE, imo.
Sometimes life is stranger than FUD. For years now we've been hearing the tired refrain that "KDE looks like Windows". Now we find out that Vista looks like KDE.
"The "200 year old" system he's bragging about worked fine. It's the recent introduction of changes to that system which have caused the problems."
That's essentially what he's saying. Parts of the system are imperfect, but as a whole it's working fine, so let's not throw it all away just because you have a problem with software patents.
Non-GPL code can be easily embraced, extended, etc... you know the trick.
Yet it hasn't happened yet. Your warning has been shouted from the mountain tops in some form or another for over twenty years. Yet it hasn't happened yet. Python, Apache, FreeBSD, Postres, Xorg, etc, have not been taken over by Microsoft. They have not been embraced, extended and extinguished. Nor is it likely they ever will be.
Stop obsessing on a horrible future that will never arrive, and live in the present instead. The nature of Free Software means that it can never have the fate you predict. Microsoft tired it with Kerberos, and utterly failed. Why? Because Kerberos was free. Free Software is not a material product. It is not something that Microsoft can take hold of and deny you. Even if they come out with a proprietary MSPostgres, you DON'T have to use it! You can continue using the 100% Free Software Postgres instead.
Ballmer isn't going to throw a chair at you, so stop worrying and learn to love freedom.
The point is, Redhat is doing nothing to solve it. All they're doing is telling their users to repent and do penance for daring to want to play an MP3 or Quicktime file. Trying to change the situation might possibly accomplish something. But doing nothing guarantees that nothing will change.
They could at least put the necessary packages on an extras CD and slap a warning label on it that the contents aren't Free Software.
Redhat is the biggest Free Software company, the richest Free Software company, and the most influential Free Software company. You would think that they could use some of their resources towards a solution to multimedia codecs problem, rather than simply calling ESR a poopoo head.
I wager that more words have been spent by Redhat employees bitching at ESR than have ever been spent suggesting to Adobe that it open their flash player.
Maybe I worded my statement wrong. Or maybe I did, but it's just too alien to today's post-modernist world view. Here it is again: The more closely aligned your perception of reality is to actual reality, all else being equal, the more successful you will be in life.
If you want to quibble over definitions of "success", I mean it in the English language sense of the word. Nothing more.
That's "optimal"? Holy crap! I have only one gig on my FreeBSD/KDE box, and I have NEVER EVER touched swap. This isn't a minimal setup server machine, it's my primary desktop. And it's not a minimalist 1990's TWM desktop either. It's a full KDE "out of the box" with all the bells and whistles turned on. This is my work machine, so it's doing work. But I have never touched swap. I've got so much RAM free I'm tempted to mount my/tmp directory there.
Four gigs for an optimal sweet spot for Vista is freaking ridiculous.
My objection to that assertion is that 'truth' is a relative & flexible thing. What's true for me is not
What a bunch of rubbish! There is only one reality. We may all perceive it differently, but it still exists only in the singular. How successful we are in life largely depends on how accurate our perception of reality is.
An example is the speed limit on a highway or turnpike. No matter how strongly your opinion is on the matter, it will in no away affect what the speed limit really is. The closer your perception of the speed limit is to the reality and truth of the speed limit, the more successful you will be in avoided traffic tickets.
Is the amount he's increasing your insurance rates sufficient to justify behaviorial controls? There is no tyranny so terrible as that of the common man who's been given power over his neighbor.
Also consider that much of the reason his health care costs are passed on to you is because people like you have demanded that everyone's health care costs be leveled. Maybe not nationally, yet, but definitely within group plans. Unless your health risk is politically incorrect, like smoking, you're going to pay the same as anyone else for the same plan. But under a real actuarial system, his unhealthy lifestyle is going to increase his premiums, while your ultra-healthy gym-going macrobiotic lifestyle won't earn you even a one cent discount.
But regardless, our present health care system is insufficient excuse to start telling him what he can or cannot put in his mouth.
My healthcare system is better than any other healthcare system. Unfortunately, that's not saying much... But a pile of crap is still better than a barrel of shit.
Oh great. Now we'll have another drug to dope our kids up on. I predict an increase in the diagnoses of autism in children as soon as this gets marketed.
"Drink your fatty acid cocktail, dear, your psychiatrist has a new BMW to pay for..."
I said that media isn't "reporting" about advancing glaciers. That's not true. They do get reported from time to time, but they're not nearly as sexy as stories about imminent catastrophe. And when they do get reported, it's in terms of controversy.
Here's a quick quote I found on glaciers: "Alpine glaciers have been retreating since the early 19th century, and were advancing for several centuries before that. Since about 1970, many of the glaciers have stopped retreating and some are now advancing again. And, frankly, we don't know why" http://epw.senate.gov/fact.cfm?party=rep&id=257863
p.s. As for the Wikipedia article, what can I say other than the fact that it's Wikipedia. It's indisputable that there are some advancing glaciers in the world today. Yet that article does not list one. Why? Because it's not an article on advancing glaciers! It's like pointing to an article on tall men as evidence that there are no short men. Sheesh.
Maybe it's pointless but everybody does it all the time.
Correct. Most blogs routinely delete inflammatory and offtopic comments. Some don't even allow comments. This is nothing new.
Unused RAM is wasted RAM.

Pros:
Scheduled defrags without third party software
You forgot one Con: Having to defrag in the first place.

Someone explain to me why this is filed under "Your Rights Online"?

what on earth has parents being worried about their kids, the Santa Fe and advertising in Australia have to do with religion?
Absolutely nothing. But that's not going to stop folks like the parent poster from screwing on their tinfoil hats too tight.

Geez, were you ever lucky! A ten ton joke just wooshed by inches over the top of your head! You could have been killed!
In other news, the IRS is encouraging strip malls to snitch on the stores leasing mall space. Sheesh.
I know it's a legal problem, not technical. Duh!

The inherent tendency of the IT department to want to crack down and control technology that it doesn't supply should be resisted at all costs
Whoa there! Now that's just crazy talk! Sit down son and rest a spell, you've been out in the sun too long.
