    So me, as a computer scientist who has studied the pros and cons of Christianity as much as I can, and have come to the conclusion that God is real, is deluded?
    Have you ever actually read and studied the gospels? If you havent, how can you possibly say your opinion is right when you havent even studied the evidence?

    Just a few thoughts. It would be almost impossible to catch the writer normally, if he doesn't do anything stupid like put his address or name or anything that could be linked to him in the code. They would have to pin down the first email sent that had the virus attached to it, and in a blizzard of spam that is extremely difficult.

    And, isnt a better virus not a standalone .exe, but a patch that patches some critical file like win.exe or rundll32.exe or something? That way it is almost impossible to get rid of, since the user would have to find the origional file and copy it over, which would be made more difficult by the virus some way. Coupled with the changing-excel-values payload, that could be an extremely deadly virus that is very difficult to get rid of...

    Afaik the most heavily used language is C/C++ and not java. Although its used in openoffice and jedit, no other java programs I use regularly spring to mind (unless they're masquerading as something else). C/C++ ar ehte most heavily used, not java, since its used for the kernel and all the 'base' programs

    Is it just me, or is this one more attempt of the Americans to control the entire computer market? If the only people who can get high-powered computers are the americans, that means that america will be the strongest country by far. Is this just yet another attempt to control the entire world by leaving everywhere in hovels?

    Whatever you do, never have more than one disk on an ide channel. Only one disk per channel can be written to at the same time, so you will get absolutely horrible performance if you get more than one hd per channel. If possible, get an ide raid card (if you can afford it) or a SATA card/mobo and drives, which dont have this problem

    Thank goodness the whacko is issuing an apology, the Zetagrid program would have been completely pointless.

    But I suspect that brute-forcing the function isnt really going to work, but it is useful for calculating primes i think...

    I'm sure the OOo people could say that their file formats use XML and therefore count as prior art, making this patent invalid whatever microsoft say. The patent office couldn't really ignore thousands of geeks emailing and phoning them up about it, could they?

    How will the kids/adults turn the censorship off when they reach 18? they can hardly go to their parents and say 'hey, I want to look at porn now, could you unblock the phone please?'.     it seems to me that the more google branches out into these extra services the more the only reason for google's success - the web searching - will be lost and ignored. I really hope google doesnt become like www.yahoo.com, which is simply an eyesore and completely useless as it tries to do too much...

    now weve seen the first commercial 1TB drive (even if it is 4 drives raided together, I conservatively estimate that we will see normal-sized TB drives within ~10 months. The problem is, most people won't know what to do with the extra space (im only using ~40% of my 60GB hd, and thats without bothering to uninstall everything I don't use). The only thing normal people will find to put on these when they come out are films copied from dvds. How long til the copy-protection people slam down on these things for encouraging dvd copying?

    On a side point here, but has anyone else noticed how recently Bush & co has been using the excuse of 'terrorists' and 'security' in the same way that IngSoc used Emmanuel Goldstein and the Rebellion to maintain order and keep everyone nicely focused and under control? There hasnt been one single terrorist bomb etc in the west for over a year now, and they have had plenty of chances to do something, now they're just using the excuse of 'security' to get whatever they want. (Air Marshalls anyone?)

    I think microsoft is just starting to realise now that the penguin is out of the bag, there is nothing they can do to stop linux spreading. Normal people have at least heard about linux, and they can't change peoples memories (yet). They are trying their hardest to stop it, but there is nothing they can do now, short of just going away completely (heaven forbid, who would ./ flame daily then?)

    The point of this is to see how fast you can overclock a normal processor using any means necessary. Says nothing about survivability of components, only the maximum stable (over ~6 hours) overclock reached. Think of it as a practical exercise.

    Its the first time a whole processor has been named after the city where I live... (but you should see the Quayside on a Friday night, most of the people there should technically be dead with the amount of alcohol they've drunk...) Is the 'Newcastle' name only for the 3000+'s, or is it a general group of processors? The 3200+ wasnt referred to as a Newcastle...

    No computer system is 100% perfect 100% of the time. There will always be errors that are no ones fault, they just occur. In fact, considering how long the NASDAQ has been running I'm suprised there haven't been more errors before this one... It is possible to reduce the chance of errors happening, but it is impossible to render something completely foolproof against every conceivable error

    most spam comes from the US. The UK is implementing a much harsher anti-spam law (opt-in), but it wont do diddly-squat since most spam comes from outside the uk ie the US.

    Yes it can. Have the worm/virus spread (probably using outlook-mass-emailing thing), then it goes to sleep for say 10 mins, then have it write over the bios. The virus spreads but still overwrites the bios.

    The problem is, to get an open protocol everyone would have to use clients which use the new protocol, and atm everyone is using proprietory IMs, and microsoft, aol and yahoo arent exactly going to update their software to use the new protocol are they? The idea is good, but how are you going to get ppl to actually use it?
