  3. MY PREDICTIONS FOR 2004 on First High-Res Color Photos from Mars · · Score: -1, Offtopic

    Predictions for 2004

    1) Both the citizenry and the government of the United States of America will continue to enjoy being arrogant and scared at the same time. More and more restrictive undemocratic laws will be passed in the US and more and more border restrictions will be put in place. Checkpoints will be setup in most major US cities, US citizens will need to carry identification at all times. A major terrorist attack will occur in the US and will kill many more than died on 9/11 the world does not sympathize with the US as they did the first time around. The US engages in an all out war of conquest in the middle east.

    2) Americans continue to use Canada as their number one scapegoat and Canada continues to laugh at the stupidity of their arguments. Canada under the leadership of Paul Martin grows balls and enters into negotiations with the EU in an effort to move away from the US sphere of influence. Canadians are split on this move but slowly come to realise that it's the best course of action.

    3) The Canadian economy continues to grow at a faster rate than the US and trade between Canada and the EU increases. Better relations are established between Canada and China.

    4) The Arab/Israeli conflict explodes into civil war and the Palestinians gain ground. The US ceases it's support for Israel and it looks as though Israel will once again be destroyed. Jewish people around the world whine and protest but no one cares.

    5) North Korea successfully deploys nuclear weapons and George Bush continues to provoke them. The world secretly hopes North Korea will just go ahead and nuke Washington but Kim loves US tv too much.

    6) France continues to enjoy a high standard of living and continues to be the butt of many jokes. The french don't care.

    7) Britain finally decides to join the EU and will phase out the pound in 2006. British troops pull out of Iraq and Tony Blair is thrown out of office.

    8) Mad cow disease hits hard in the US and as usual Canada is blamed. Oddly enough no more cases of mad cow disease appear in Canada and Canadians continue to enjoy beef.

    9) People continue to die in Africa and no one does much about it.

    10) Australia decides to become a republic and elects Jeb Bush, George Bush's brother as their first dictator er I mean president.

  7. How RedHat's Linux Can Defeat Micr$oft's Windoze on Hacking Samsung 4510-Based APs · · Score: -1, Troll

Hi, I've always used Windowz and I consider myself an exceptional Visual Basic programmer, so I know computers pretty good. In fact I got an A- in my programming class last term. But I'm a little wary of how much power Microsoft has in the computer field. Many of my friends use RedHat and I've recently installed it on my machine at home. Although I haven't had as much chance to play with it as I'd like, I've been greatly impressed. This weekend I gave some thoughts to the things that are wrong with Linux. I hope no one minds having some flaws pointed out. I'd like to help make RedHat stronger so it can conquer MS. Hopefully RedHat will hear this (crossing fingers) and address these. I think with a little effort, RedHat's Linux can defeat Microsoft's Windows! :) To begin with, there are too many different flavors of RedHat. Browsing a list on Amazon, I saw they made varients under the codenames of Mandrake, Debian and Slackware, just to name a few. I know that I'm very new to RedHat so maybe this is obvious but it seems like RedHat should just sell a few different flavors of its operating system. Perhaps one for the desktop and one for a server? Could someone explain why RedHat produces dozens of different versions of Linux? Secondly did you know that anyone can view the source code to Linux! I think that RedHat shouldn't make its code available. After all, what keeps Microsoft from stealing RedHat's ideas and putting it into Windows? My friend says that FreeBSD stole the TCP/IP stack from DOS a long time ago and Microsoft is always looking for revenge for that. Plus it seems to me like RedHat is just giving away its ideas for free. And what keeps hackers or terrorists from tampering with the code and putting a virus in every computer? On a related note, why doesn't RedHat write Linux in assembly? My friend says that's what Microsoft does for Windows, and that's why Windows is faster and more stable than Linux. Next RedHat definitely should kill -9 (ha, ha!) the command line. Microsoft finally gave up DOS when Windows 2000 came out. I'm suprised that RedHat hasn't migrated away from...whatever its version of DOS is called (Bash, I think?) But maybe this is planned for a future release? Finally Linux needs games! RedHat will never be successful in the home without games. They should also tell M$ to release a version of Office for Linux too. And Internet Explorer! Have a nice day! Go Linux!!

This fact plays well in a scientific computing environment such as MIT. It does not match what the majority of systems do today: Solve a business problem. OO languages make it easier to develop business solutions and RDBMS are indeed ideal object stores for this purpose. I love computer science and computing theory about tuples, facts, lists, relvars and all but, once you leave university you might as well flush all that crap back down the toilet. Try telling a manager that they should consider using an object relation database for this project or using a lisp interpreter and they'll tell you to STFU and go back to your desk.

I know this because I was close to moving their after I graduated from college and after investigating I found out that it was'nt worth it. Then tack on health care premiums and you're talking less money than I can make here. "One disadvantage with nationalized health care is that if you get problems because of bad treatment, it's very, very hard to sue the state and win." You actually would'nt sue the state for bad treatment anyway you would sue the doctor responsible. They still carry malpractice insurance. In Canada doctors are motivated to HELP you because they bill the government just as they would a private insurance company (ie the more complicated treatments they do the more $ they make). So the problem you described with your knee would probably not have happened. You could also get a second opinion because no matter what health care system you have there will always be doctors who get it wrong.

My employer pays the $60/month premium charged by my provincial government and I can go to any clinic/doctor/hospital I want. Minimum wage slaves don't even have to pay the premium and they get the same benefits. The other advantage is that our government controls perscription drug prices by listing the price they will pay for drugs.
