that is more due to limitations on NTFS and FAT* than self protection

unix filesystems can delete an in-use file and only physically remove it when it is no longer in use, windows cannot do that. hence having to reboot for so many updates and some configuration changes (such as changing host name)

actually the DMCA allows reverse engineering for hardware compatability, also since this technology doesn't allow unprotecting of itunes purchased media it won't fall under any sort of contributory infringement

also it wouldn't be difficult for companies to release programmable mp3 players which happened to have a flawed security model allowing "pirate" firmware to be loaded that will play itunes music just fine in the event that this is somehow banned in the US

that $350 mp3 player also can watch videos and play games, so it's up there with high end PDA's and digital media players. the big difference is that with apple you also get a nice store to buy stuff for your mp3 player.

if they figure it out, even without write access to the hosts file, they can use a web lookup like whois.sc or network-tools.com too get the IP address they wanted, then paste that into the URL in place of the domain name.

i did this to access AIM Express in highschool years ago.

also some kids will get their hands on a single port NAT to kill many remote administation or logging tools.
configure the nat to do it's thing on incoming, and to block all outgoing connections to other machines on the LAN.
