Ya I understand that. And though I didint mention it and my comments where generalised I agree.
But those who do care, and get involved or just at least pay attention seem to fall into the mold I painted above.
In any case, thats the impression outsiders get of it.
Im a french Canadian, and except for the few fanatic (Partie Quebecois) people aka Seperatists, we do not view ourselves as such and such party or type of people.
Im for abortion Im undecided on guns (though its not as important an issue here) Im for gay marriage etc... etc...
I have my own views, I do not let a party dictate my way of thought. And I dont care what anyone else says, but the fact that Americans have only 2 strong parties and are so fanatic about them (generalisation I know), is what breed younger generations to affiliate themselves with 1 party or the other.
It stiffles critical thought when you live in a Repuplican Radical Right family how in hell can you grow up to be anything else. (Exceptions exist of course, but few)
In the end, I think some Americans adjust their views to fit the party. Which is just wrong.
Fire codes are different for each City/County. And sometimes drasticaly different.
For highly secure areas like banks, or research companies, some areas are allowed to be fail secure or fail safe.
The first meaning, power is needed to UNLOCK the door, and the second power is needed to LOCK the door.
Naturaly when power goes out, the opposite happens. Most times this is because of Maglocks and Door strikes.
It is very possible that this dumbass locked himself in. But even more possible that there is an override latch of some sort, and he was just too dumb to find it !!
Seems to me allot of the slashdot crowd dont even know how biometrics work.
In many instances, there is no central database that holds the palm print for comparison.
The palm/fingerprints are kept on EACH DEVICE. So to setup a new employee (in this case), You have to bring the employee up to the device, read his palm/print and with a software often connected (temporarily) by a serial port on the device, it will give you a number (26bit wiegand) associated to the palm/print in question.
Palm/prints are kept only on the device and in normal operation all that is sent from the device to the Time & Attendance or Access Control System is this number, more often then not (26bit wiegand).
So all of you who are scared of giving your finger print to an employee can just relax. The most sharing that will be done with your print is some devices can be networked between each other if the side has multiple readers.
Thats where the ignorance of the general populace and even most geeks concerning biometrics is.
They beleive that biometrics is all about keeping a copy of the fingerprint/retinal scan/hand print etc... on a centralised server.
People dont want that, and besides, its not secure and its putting your eggs in one basket.
The way biometrics are going and the way they will be working is by having your fingerprint information kept on a microchip on a badge/prox card/magstrip card or what not.
Authentication is 2 tier, pass your card (finger print information is temporarily sent to device from card) show your print, confirms your the rightfull owner of the card.
Cant compromise the finger print DB cause there isnt any.
You have to take into consideration that 17-19$ canadian, for a level 1 tech support job, is actually a good offer.
17-19$ Goes a long way in Edmonton (I beleive thats where the job is) compared to lets say Vancouver or Toronto where you'd need at least 25$/hour.
You guys have to remember, you will have a better living standard with 17$/hour Canadian in Edmonton, than if your doing 30$/hour USD in Sillicon Valley.

You see, that is what us outsiders cannot fathom.

:) I know Syracuse, and Rochester, etc... are really close.
Especially the women
BTW, Montreal is 375 miles from NY and
Toronto is 490 miles
But if your speaking of somewhere else in NY state, then I cant argue
Nicest city in the world ?
Ha, you have seen Montreal, have you !!
Use ports other than the standard 6881 and up.
Use ports like 8001 to 8009
It will speed up your downloads by a magnitude of 10 or more.
Seems the trackers are saturated on ports 6881. I dont know exactly why !

Take into consideration that Hydro-Quebec is a state owned agency.
So they can be heavily subsidised if someone in the government beleives in the product.
