    If MS is successful with their Licensing schemes then about 92% of the world will not be able to run windows. I guess we are still blind to the fact we are heading into a era of global computing. The US was strong early in computing due to the high cost of computing, and the wealth of it's people. This will/is shifting away from the US due to the number of people/nationalities that are are now part of the growing global computing community. Soon a High School graduate in Japan will have the equivalent of a American CS degree, as will many students in many nations. Remember the American public school system?

    Remember the only people who can sell a Official RedHat Linux CD is RedHat, everyone else sells whatever they call the copied/cloned/cheap/improved cds. AOL is most likely buying the right to use the name Redhat.

    apply all kinds of patches and tweaks which are barely documented?
    Why don't you tell the truth. Just turn off un-needed services. And stay current with your distribution. With redhat that is as simple as up2date to stay current. The book that comes with the distro walks you through service selection. MS's book included with the OS mentions the mouse.

    That the digital rights management scheme will be uncrackable, and you will not be allowed to play that digital media stream more then once. Not that the machine will be more secure.

    Security to their customer base does not include you. Only large Coorporations who want money each time you listen/see/smell/touch/etc something.

    Windows + Firewall + Regular Patches = NO NEED FOR LINUX

    let me rewrite that in a different way

    $199 retail "Home version" + $10/month Internet connection + $$software = need for Linux

    You are not the world. Most of the worlds population is poor. You are the minority coming in at 8%. The poor can not afford windows. What they can afford is time. So with a planet of Linux hackers "92%" there will be no need of windows.

    Lets not assume what we will always be. You will miss out on allot of things.

    As for the quality of Office XP on window XP it is a joke. Outlook cant handle multiple filters properly. Word can not complete a simple search and replace in a large text file. Excel borks on large files as well. And this is on tier 1hardware with only office installed.

    I like the idea of FreeBSD being removed from control of a company making a competing product.

    FreeBSD is very much alive. If I pulled the FreeBSD nodes out of the Internet you wold not be able to read this. It is a large part of the backbone routing and firewalling. FreeBSD powers more than 25% of all web-sites visited daily. It powers all of Yahoo and the actual work behind the MS load balancers at Hotmail.

    Once people have to start paying for every instance of a digital media stream they hear or see, we will find how few they are actually willing to pay for. This will cause allot of media content providers to go bye-bye as their paying audience is allot smaller then their original audience.

    Unix accounting software is far more mature and feature complete then this group seems to know. It has been in wide deployment longer then any Windows accounting software. A quick search on google shows many professional and mature Unix accounting/bookkeeping packages that will run on linux. This was one of the areas of initial application development that occurred in the 1970s. Many/Many companies developed internal accounting packages that were made into commercial products. Windows is the newcomer to this...IMIO

    You are right I always send my customers *.doc. Boy that would be dumb. Send them a file they can edit, or supply to my competition. I either send them a protected pdf or a hard copy via fax or mail.

    GNU license. if you use some preexisting GNU code to build your project then your project is GNU.

    Your Linux guy is not. All modern linux distributions unmout when shutting down automatically. "Just like Windows" or have you never failed to shutdown properly?

    Do you mean server? or Client? Evolution is a linux client. So saying it supports only linux clients is weird. For a exchange replacement "server" you can use http://www.bynari.net/groupware.html not free but allot less expensive then Exchange or Domino.
