    > ANSI-Java?

Yes, effectively. The only way any open source implementation of Java are above question would be if Sun actually drops their formal conformance requirements.

I understand that Microsoft has C# is an ANSI standard (or ISO standard??).

I don't see standardization as conveying much trust in Microsofts case although it might convey more with Sun. I think the availability of complete, alternate implementations that are not backed by a single entity is more important.

OTOH, an ANSI standard would mitigate Sun's fears that Java will fork badly. Although, again, with a, central, Free codebase and a development model that encourages participation destructive forkage would be a smaller risk.

IBM put JFS the AIX journaling filesystem into Linux. They might well respond by saying yes. I do admit that given IBMs long history of tweaking SUN (Eclipse anyone?) that this offer by IBM might not be taken that well. OTOH Sun has never seemed that hell bent on monetizing Java - the licensing and conformance testing fees probably don't begin to cover development costs.

They say are trying to build a community around Java and it seems to me that given those two points Sun really should release Java to the open source community.

I think this really would give Java a HUGE boost over .NOT.

Besides, JBoss and Linux distros make money on packaging and supporting Free but hugely complex systems.

SGI's IRIX has this tool with little versions of each desktop in a scrollable resizeable pane. You can hover your mouse over the little windows and icons in the desktops and tooltip-like name of the application shows up. You can drag little icons fro one desktop to the next. It's like you own little computer . . . it's so cute. This tool has been a standard part of IRIX for at least 8 years (throughout most of IRIX-5.* and all of IRIX-6.*). The window manager is 4Dwm. I've never in my life seen a desktop pager for Windows. They must hide it or make you pay for it.

I might get modded flamebait for this but ... After running both Linux (Yellow Dog 2.3) and MacOS X Panther I must say I like Gnome better. I think OSX would be just another desktop among many. Gnome is coming out with 2.6 soon and KDE is moving up a notch too so they will be getting faster and easier to use.

Im guessing there is a much larger developer developer base behind Gnome and KDE than the Mac OSX gui.

I've found Linux to be more stable than Darwin too. If you have more that one person logged into Panther I find it slooows down and then freezes.

I think MySQL and PostgreSQL are more a threat to lower end products like SQL Server, Access.

Actually I think that without a lot of the features that full SQL92 databases have like foreign keys and triggers MySQL is more like a data warehousing product than a database per se. Their (MySQLs) stated goal is fast fetches. They meet that goal.

OTOH MySQL linked up with SAP and is maintaining the SAP DB and putting powerful stuff into MySQL. It could get interesting for Oracle.

It would be a blast to run GTDS (Goddard Trajectory Determination System) again. OK I'm a geek. Still, it would be really cool to have a good orbit propagator in toys like xephem and Orbiter.
Software like this could be a great boon to physics and engineering education too.
Also, think about the X prize competitors having access to this. Some Free key flight dynamics SW or Computational Fluid Dynamics codes would level the playing field.

I think my favorite way to get rid of docks and taskbars in one integrated tool is the IRIX Desktops. IRIX has the only desktop switcher that I ever get around to using. KDE, Gnome, etc. all have desktops that I tend to ignore because you can't see what's in them really.

IRIX Desktop gives you a window with a row of desktop images that are large enough to represent each window and icon in each desktop with a little appropriately-sized rectangle. They didn't try to paint the windows and icons as thumbnails but if you hover your mouse it tells you the app name and the file that is open.

You can drag the liitle windows acoss to any desktop, you can iconify or axpand windows in the Desktop tool! There is always one root desktop to put windows that should be visible in all desktops.

I found the useability and information density of this tool to be very useful. you can name the windows and pick the background for each one too.

Their window manager is 4Dwm. I wish they would open source their wm.
